‘ikk1 The year of the Tiger. This was the theme and the spirit given by the students. It is one to be remembered for many reasons, and I congratulate DeCal la staff for their success in preserving the memories of this one special school year. As you leaf through your DeCalla, you will be reminded of friends, athletics, assem- blies, homecoming, plays, trips, classes, rallies, concerts, and the many things that meant high school to you. I sincerely hope that DeQuincy High School has given you the opportunity to prepare yourself for a life of happiness and success. y V

ARE TEACHERS REALLY HUMAN? Between the innocence of babyhood and the conquest of the adult world lies a Teacher. They are as ancient as Adam, as modern as television, and available in all sizes, male and female, from college fresh 22 to experienced 65 years of age. Teachers are found everywhere--in classrooms and cars, at the football games, dances, bowling, and-after school. Little girls love them, little boys hate them, sophomores ig- nore them, older students tolerate them, and graduates appre- ciate them. Nobody else knows so much and is credited with knowing so little. Nobody else is a mind reader, prosecuting attorney, master of tactical warfare, counsel, bureau of information and is still known as slave driver supreme. Teachers LIKE neat papers, combed hair, lunch periods, clean rooms, perfect attendance, rapt attention and vacations. They DON'T like eating during class, nameless papers, tardy slips, tight dresses, too much make-up, fire drills, smart alecks or chewing gum. A Teacher is happiest when everyone understands the lesson, saddest when there is a huge stack of smudgy tests to grade, slowest when the bell-to-go rings, fastest when no one is ready for the test, yet nicest when you've just decided to hate her, and the most longwinded when keeping you after class. God endowed teachers with many animal instincts for classroom survival. He gave them the slyness of a fox, the voice of a parrot, the memory of an elephant, the stubborness of a mule, the quickness of a gazelle, the keen sight of an eagle, and the life span of a turtle. Who else can cause more grief, embarrassment, .IrritaXion ' tion and despair? Who else can be more hated, ignored, knock- ed and gossiped about, yet seem so wonderfully sympathetic and tolerant when the world is a mess and your self-confidence is tumbling? Yes, Teachers are nerve-wracking nuisances, just task masters to be endured, but when commencement is over and it's time to face the world, we are so thankful for the know- ledge and the understanding of the most influ cated people in the world
