Education commences at the mother's knee, and every word spoken within the hearsay of little children tends toward the formation of character. How very true this quotation, but we have nothing to fear, for we have received a Catholic Education. This is the kind of education for which children are fitted, the kind par- ents want them to have, and the kind of education to which they have a right, as free Amerioen-born citizens. we owe our worthy education to the work of many faithful and zealous sisters and priests. They have made many see- rifices, endeavouring to install in the students the de- sire to strive for the highest goal obtainable, namely; -- eternal life in the world to come. we can only gain this with the teachings and guidance of Catholic Educators, who implant in the hearts and minds, and in the sou1,knowledge love and zeal for the service of God. They are doing what Christ intended them to do, educating children for God an country. In a Catholic school we find the phases of men- tal development, stressed hand in hand with the develop- ment of moral consciousness. Right now many of us do not fully appreciate the value of the untiring efforts of the Catholic sisters, but in the years to come we will be more than thankful that we have had a good, solid Cathalic edu- cation. If there was only some way in which we could show our ap- preeintion, but this is impossible for we, the Catholic- youth, can never repay the Catholic Educators for their supreme wnrk, and untiring efforts, therefore, we,as afar- vent Thank You , dedicate the De Paduan to all Catholic Educators, but especially to the untiring, loving and -- zealous work of the Franciscan sisters and priests, Ihoare molding the lives and characters of the youth, according to the will of our Creator, and we shall ever be mindful of the benefits they have given us in our spiritual pre- paration for life. May God reward them with eternal hap- piness in the life to come. Pastor of St. Agnes Church Superintendent of DePadua High School To Father John, our Pastor we owe more than we can ever be capable of repaying for the many un- told benefits he has given us, both material and spiritual. we realize his untiring and unselfish efforts in furthering our ultimate end to happiness--Catholic Education. Humbly we offer and express our deepest appreciation and loving tribute to his solicitude for our welfare. To Father Raphael, our instructor and Spiritual Guide we also owe unbounded gratitude. we emu endeavor to live up to the ideal which he has set up in our association with him. we realize that there will be many trials and obstacles during our journey of Life, therefore, we are most grateful and apprec- iative for the lessons he has taught us- an unlimited aid to attain our final end. To Father Alivin, Our Sodality Moderator, we pledge our love and loyalty.Through his un- selfish and uholdearted labor in the inter- ests of the sodalists, he has won thelnm and admiration of many. Having such a niend l and teacher will certainly help us in qply- ing the principles of religion in our daily life. we are proud to be sodalists under such a leader and therefore we offerlwm our deepest and sincerest tribute of gratitude. 10 Rev. Father Raphael Grahl, 0.F.M. Rev. Father Alvin Schlubeck, 0.F.M. Religion Reli ion Mr. William Knoblauoh Coach - Manual Training TO THE FACULTY Another year at De Padue is being wafted into the annuals of the past. For some of us it is a final parting; but all of us retain the unmisted memories of'aweu spent year. we will remember it chiefly because of those with whom we have associated, especially the faculty. we dedicate this page to the faculty who has so carefully watched and glided our yamg lives with a. hulyCath- olic Education. we realize how much our teachers have done for us,meking our school life urns inter- esting, teaching us how to conduct ourselves in the every day happenings of daily life, inspiring the noblest that is in us, ready to give without a1ntb1g the cost. Now at last their work is done and um hqn and pray, that they will see us good Christian men and women leaders in Catholic Action through home business or social affairs. It would be more fitting if we would offer each member of the faculty an individual tribute of gratitude.0nly by doing this, can we do justice to the spirit in which they have offered us their services. These priests and sisters are truly our comrades. But since we cannot honor them as individuals, we honor So we them as one, for are they not one with us in the Mystical Body of Christ, as Christ has ordained7And this is also fitting for after all,the ultimate end of each is the same, namely; to teach us to loveani serve our Creator in whatever state of life we are, to perfect an all-eround unselfish character so that we can fit into any pattern of life, but especially that for which each individual yearns. say in all reverence and respect--a tributefrom the students to a splendid faculty. 12 Sister M. The aim and purpose of the Sodality is to foster in its members an ardent de- votion, reverence, and filial love toward the Blessed Virgin Mary, and through this devotion and with the protection of so good a Mother,to strive for one's person- al sanctifioation, the sanctification of, our neighbor, and to defend the Church of Jesus Christ against the attacks of the wicked. The Blessed Virgin Mary is the principal Patroness of the Sodelity, as the common name indicates. The Queen's Work is the voice of the Sodality. This magazine helps us to further our Sodality to become Catholic leaders to be well versed on Catholic subjects and to win the world for Christ through Mary. The central committee is made up of a moderator, prefect, secretary, and a treasurer. The subordinate committees of our Sodelity ere: Eucharistic Committee, Our Lady's Committee, Apostolic Committee Catholic Truth, Social Life, and Parish Loyalty. Lend me your ears: The Speech Club was reorganized in September, under the capable supervision of Sister M. Stilla.Ita first meeting was called to order, by Earle Gingles, the president. Presiding officers are Dorothy Schreiner, vioe president; Jeanne lhdak, secretary; and Robert Pinkowski, treasurer. The club is called the De Padua Thespians and meet- ings were held the first Friday of every month. At our meetings topics of dramatic interest are studied such es-modern p1eywrights,stage light- ing, make-up,costumes, etc. To pep up the meet- ings, skits or other entertainments were given either by members or outside talent. At our first appearance the Thespians pre- sented the play The Other Sheep , sponsored by the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. Father Peter Meyer is the Director, for this Diocese. Our second appearance was the Open Forum-- discussion on the Presidential Candidates. The next big event was the Amateur Hour Contest. It was truly an hour of rollicking fun. Five one act plays were given. A few weeks later, a Tea was held for the members of the club. At the Christmas program sponsored by the P.T.A., the Thespians again gave three skits. On December 20th, they entertained at the Pure Air Sanitar- ium for the inmates. Then came the time to show our true drama- tic ability, the Declamatory Contest. Those ta- king part were: Patricia Carlin, Benedict Pages Dorothy Schreiner, Dorothy Selner, Betty Peter- son, Jeanne thak, Ardythe Mueller, RObert Pin- kowski, Joe Tarasewicz. Yes, we are truly proud to be Theapians of De Padua and we tried our best in doing our part by being active and progressive, in developing our dramatic abilities. May this course prove an incentive for all Theapiens to be leaders especially in the filtering field of Catholic Action. One-act players Dorothy Schreiner, Patricia Carlin, Edith Peters, Kathryn Davis, and Betty Peterson talk things over as they rest after the performance. May I have your autograph? ....right below.... SPORTOGRAPHS 64 De Padua -- Ashland Game 1941 T'was the 15th of Jhnuary, I know you all remember, That held as much excitement, As the 25th of December. Let's go back again and view, The game that's for the books, And watch the teams both confident, Dribble--shoot--try hooks. The whistle sounds--the game is on, The tenseness issupreme, As Anderson tips the ball, To Innes, hear us scream. With steady hands they pass the ball, The team work and precision Is ourstanding in the game, But OH! there's a collision. You're right its a jump ball, And Ashland gets the tip, But Trush gets a free throw, A Purgolder tried to trip. Trush stands before the basket, And says a silent prayer, To our patron St. Anthonv. Not to forget he's there. He shoots and as it clears the net, The crowd gives out a shout, And now the game again proceeds, With De Padua's win enroute. Mo Auliffe intercepts a pass, And dribbles down to score, And all the gym is in a din, That's heard from top to floor. Ashland's planning-playing a nice game, Both teams are out to win. And the agressors sink a basket, Which gives our Team new vinn. The score is getting plenty close, As fourth period draws near, The buckets swish in left and right, Both teams have much to fear. Goose is at the free throw line, The foul is known as hacking, He shoots--it hits the rim--and in, Our team has nothin lacking. With closing minutes drawing near, The score is almost tie, Here Ashland gets a free throw, It's goodt 0H ME! OH MY!! A so-called over time is called, Three minutes more of fight, The Bruin's on the floor again, To show their mighty might. Hugo, rather small but quick, When fighting's in the middle, And his height just goes to show, It's no disgrace to be little. Bill Innes so dependable, .Sinks the ball to score, And again the Bruin's show, De Padua's might once more. The whistle sounds--the game is won, The joy of victory swells, Congratulations to the team, Is shown by rahs and yells. The Ashland team shows sportsmanship, Prove worthy of their name, By congratulating the team, With Nice game, fellows, nice game. And De Padua's student body, And the faculty as well, Say, we're proud of our team. And Nice game, fellows, it was swell. Virginia Paiment 41.
