1848 16 The Brothers Boys Congratulate the Brothers Address of JOHN F BROSNAN of the Chrrstlan Brothers ln the Unxted States Metropolitan Opera House Aprxl 19 1948 Mr ohn Brosnan May lt please your Emmence Mr Charrman Your Excellencxes and the other drs tnngurshed guests of the Chrrstran Brothers Very Rexerend Asslstant Superxor General and Brothers Ladles and Gentlemen In 1938 at the Convocatron commemorating the Diamond ubtlee of Manhattan College Father Gannon the speaker of the occasron began one of hrs rmmrtable addresses by telling us that ln 1848 four Chrtstlan Brothers from France landed rn New York to open a school on Canal Street that the next day one of the news papers carrred a cartoon showmg the four Brothers standmg at the watersxde weeplng coplous tears whlle a salllng vessel receded toward a dlstant France and that the cartoon bore the captron The esunts Lament for Thetr Nauve Land But rt was not long before the Chrrstran Brothers made the 1 name and their fame known not only rn Lrttle Old New York but throughout the length and the breadth of Amerxca Perhaps this was due to the1r wholehearted devotion to their one vocatron teachxng Certalnly rt owed much to therr unselfish labors among the poor Clearly rt marked the blessing of God upon their extraordinary self sacrrhces De La Salle their founder harled by the Church as a Samt and acclalmed by the learned as one of the great educators of all ttme land down for the sons who would bear his name and carry on hrs work precise rules for the conduct of therr ltves and their labors Bearing the lmprmt of the Dtune flre which flamed so steadlly rn hrs pure and humble heart they meet and satisfy today in modern Amerlca esery test just as they drd when formulated by hrm rn France rn the Seventeenth Century Followmg such basrc pattern the educatxon whrch the Chrrstlan Brothers impart rests not on the trnangular base of the three R s but upon the more reallstlc and sounder four square foundatlon of Readlng Rltlng Rrthmetnc and Relrgron This turnmg to God rs the very core of thexr educational system constantly renewed rn the daxly dedtcatlon which they make of therr persons thetr puprls their communmes their houses of foundation and their entlre Congregation 1 df 9 9 1 ' 3 .- , , ..
