1848 16 The Brothers Boys Congratulate the Brothers Address of JOHN F BROSNAN of the Chrrstlan Brothers ln the Unxted States Metropolitan Opera House Aprxl 19 1948 Mr ohn Brosnan May lt please your Emmence Mr Charrman Your Excellencxes and the other drs tnngurshed guests of the Chrrstran Brothers Very Rexerend Asslstant Superxor General and Brothers Ladles and Gentlemen In 1938 at the Convocatron commemorating the Diamond ubtlee of Manhattan College Father Gannon the speaker of the occasron began one of hrs rmmrtable addresses by telling us that ln 1848 four Chrtstlan Brothers from France landed rn New York to open a school on Canal Street that the next day one of the news papers carrred a cartoon showmg the four Brothers standmg at the watersxde weeplng coplous tears whlle a salllng vessel receded toward a dlstant France and that the cartoon bore the captron The esunts Lament for Thetr Nauve Land But rt was not long before the Chrrstran Brothers made the 1 name and their fame known not only rn Lrttle Old New York but throughout the length and the breadth of Amerxca Perhaps this was due to the1r wholehearted devotion to their one vocatron teachxng Certalnly rt owed much to therr unselfish labors among the poor Clearly rt marked the blessing of God upon their extraordinary self sacrrhces De La Salle their founder harled by the Church as a Samt and acclalmed by the learned as one of the great educators of all ttme land down for the sons who would bear his name and carry on hrs work precise rules for the conduct of therr ltves and their labors Bearing the lmprmt of the Dtune flre which flamed so steadlly rn hrs pure and humble heart they meet and satisfy today in modern Amerlca esery test just as they drd when formulated by hrm rn France rn the Seventeenth Century Followmg such basrc pattern the educatxon whrch the Chrrstlan Brothers impart rests not on the trnangular base of the three R s but upon the more reallstlc and sounder four square foundatlon of Readlng Rltlng Rrthmetnc and Relrgron This turnmg to God rs the very core of thexr educational system constantly renewed rn the daxly dedtcatlon which they make of therr persons thetr puprls their communmes their houses of foundation and their entlre Congregation 1 df 9 9 1 ' 3 .- , , .. The thoughtful man who knows 1n hrs heart that such turnmg to God IS the crymg need of our vsorld can truly ew aluate the measure of the Brothers influence as nt has radlated 1nto ewery quarter of the globe and permeated through every strata of soclety through the lxves and the works of the boys tramed by them to become effectne cmzens of the world vvhlle remalnmg slmple children of their Creator Nor 15 xt a matter of surprlse to the thoughtful man that today slxteen hundred Brothers carry on where a hundred years ago four began and that fue colleges scattered from Coast to Coast from my beloved Alma Mater Manhattan rn New York to St Mary s of the Moraga Valley 1n Cal1forn1a cap the educatlonal efforts of the Brothers in Amerlca whlle zealous unsung labors 1n more than eighty parochlal and secondary schools constttute the rock upon which thelr work ns safely bullded Durlng the Franco Prussian War a famous French general commentnng upon the work of the Chrxstlan Brothers then engaged because of the tlmes not xn the task of teachxng but rn merciful labors for the wounded and the dymg sa1d Certamly the Brothers deserve well of the people Thrs IS as true of the teaching labors of the Brothers as xt IS of their works of mercy as true rn America today as If was rn France then Therefore lf 15 quite ln accord wnth the eternal fitness of thmgs that tonxght you who constltute thxs vast assemblage gather to honor the Christian Brothers and that the foremost representatxves of Cnty of State of Nation and of Church proclaim as they so eloquently will the debt of gratitude whlch the people lrrespecttve of race creed or color owe to these humble sxmple s1ncere self sacrlficlng men who have wrought so glorlously for God for Church and for Country But how much greater ts the debt of those for whom I am prxvlleged to speak we who bear the accolade Brothers Boy Brothers Boy at once the mark of a sound educatlon and a bond of affectxon between a boy and a man And as that education wlthstands so well the demands of lxfe that bond grows and strengthens so that the man of srxty IS just as proud as the lad of twelve to be called a Brothers Boy Brothers Boys' One can see them all stretchlng back through all the hun dred years rank upon serned rank luke the dream of Mr Chips Hayes and Mundelem Cohalan Dowlmg Lavelle Cotter Cotlllo Ferrer Ridder Smlth Sulllvan Stapleton McEntegart McGoldr1ck a mlghty host marchmg ever marchmg under the Banner of the Brothers Cardinal Hayes stating Dear old Manhattan how I love her and Oh' How I love to honor my old teachers the Chrlstxan Brothers Al Smlth saymg I never forget all I owe to Brother Baldwxn of old St ames All of them proclalmlng constantly proclalmlng their debt and thetr devotxon So Very Rewerend Asststant Superlor General on behalf of all these boys I gladly proclatm nn the presence of thxs vast assemblage the lmmeasurable debt we owe to your Brothers our teachers and our frlends I offer through you to them our congratulatxons upon thxs great ubllee and our pledge of contmued loyalty I pray God that we may catch and hold some of thelr flamlng fervor and so forever keep unsullned that txtle of true nobllxty which belongs to all of us who have come under the teaching lnfluence of the Chrlstxan Brothers Brothers Boy 1948 17 1 1 I ' , . 1 . . .
