Introduction lt all began in seventeenth Century France when St. john Baptist De La Salle be- came aware that the educa- tion of youth was limited to the wealthy, and restrictive of any value system. He founded the Brothers of the Christian Schools for the expressed purpose of pro- viding a complete education for all youth regardless of social class or condition. He envisioned a complete education, one which pro- vided an academic curricu- lum infused by a system of values found in the gospel of jesus Christ. This tradition, kept alive by thousands of Christian Brothers and others throughout the world is characterized by Chris- tian values, an insistance on educational excellence, and on an innovative spirit re- sponsive to the needs of the young. De La Salle was born out of this tradition and operates within this tradi- tion. Since its founding in 1965, De La Salle has of- fered an alternative to pub- lic school education. The small classes, the opportuni- ty for close relationship between student and faculty, the highly personalized efforts of the school com- munity and the Christian Value system presented are unique features of De La Salle educational opportuni- ties. Each year since its founding, De La Salle has continued to expand its pro- grams in academics, ath- letics, and student activi- ties. Each year new pro- grams have been initiated. ln 1969 the upper division courses in Science, Mathe- matics, Social Studies, and English were shared with the students and faculty of Carondelet High School in order to offer a wider range of electives and share in the talent of the two faculties more extensively. The ath- letic program has expanded to encompass a full range of all major sports. The co- curricular activity program and student government have added each year new clubs and sponsored many student- initiated activities. Through all this change and expansion, De La Salle has remained true to its traditions and its philosophy of providing an education containing cognitive truths and promoting the experi- ence of the value system foimd in the gospel of jesus Christ. Even now that De La Salle has become a com- pletely modern institution, facilities built and first yearbook issued in 1966, it has, as an institution re- mained true to its original objectives and goals, its , founder's philosophy, and its declaration that De La Salle shall be dedicated to concern for the persons of the students and the com- munity life of the school, fostering concern for the Lmiqueness of each student while promoting personal freedom and training in re- sponsibility within that community atmosphere. De La Salle has pledged itself to remaining relevant to the changing times while remaining faithful to the spirit of the traditiong and in and through all changes proudly declares: De La Salle High School is a Catholic School in which Christian Values are fos- tered within a Christian Community and Catholic Tradition centered in God's revealing of Himself to man, and the Eucharistic celebra- tionf. lt is within this tradition of newness within the spirit of tradition that the 1977 SPARTAN has been produced and is proudly presented. 1977 Student Handbook, p. 6
