Ads Introduction lt all began in seventeenth Century France when St. john Baptist De La Salle be- came aware that the educa- tion of youth was limited to the wealthy, and restrictive of any value system. He founded the Brothers of the Christian Schools for the expressed purpose of pro- viding a complete education for all youth regardless of social class or condition. He envisioned a complete education, one which pro- vided an academic curricu- lum infused by a system of values found in the gospel of jesus Christ. This tradition, kept alive by thousands of Christian Brothers and others throughout the world is characterized by Chris- tian values, an insistance on educational excellence, and on an innovative spirit re- sponsive to the needs of the young. De La Salle was born out of this tradition and operates within this tradi- tion. Since its founding in 1965, De La Salle has of- fered an alternative to pub- lic school education. The small classes, the opportuni- ty for close relationship between student and faculty, the highly personalized efforts of the school com- munity and the Christian Value system presented are unique features of De La Salle educational opportuni- ties. Each year since its founding, De La Salle has continued to expand its pro- grams in academics, ath- letics, and student activi- ties. Each year new pro- grams have been initiated. ln 1969 the upper division courses in Science, Mathe- matics, Social Studies, and English were shared with the students and faculty of Carondelet High School in order to offer a wider range of electives and share in the talent of the two faculties more extensively. The ath- letic program has expanded to encompass a full range of all major sports. The co- curricular activity program and student government have added each year new clubs and sponsored many student- initiated activities. Through all this change and expansion, De La Salle has remained true to its traditions and its philosophy of providing an education containing cognitive truths and promoting the experi- ence of the value system foimd in the gospel of jesus Christ. Even now that De La Salle has become a com- pletely modern institution, facilities built and first yearbook issued in 1966, it has, as an institution re- mained true to its original objectives and goals, its , founder's philosophy, and its declaration that De La Salle shall be dedicated to concern for the persons of the students and the com- munity life of the school, fostering concern for the Lmiqueness of each student while promoting personal freedom and training in re- sponsibility within that community atmosphere. De La Salle has pledged itself to remaining relevant to the changing times while remaining faithful to the spirit of the traditiong and in and through all changes proudly declares: De La Salle High School is a Catholic School in which Christian Values are fos- tered within a Christian Community and Catholic Tradition centered in God's revealing of Himself to man, and the Eucharistic celebra- tionf. lt is within this tradition of newness within the spirit of tradition that the 1977 SPARTAN has been produced and is proudly presented. 1977 Student Handbook, p. 6 Prineipalgs Message As we, the faculty and administrators of De La Salle, reflect on the school year l976-77 we are pleased and proud of the progress, growth, dedication and con- cern which have been the distinguishing marks of so many of you graduating sen- iors. Each of you in your own way, with your own special talents, with your own degree of commitment has made an extra effort to contribute something of your- self to the De La Salle community. Young people are our hope. You carry within yourselves the potential to make crucial changes in our society. You carry within yourselves the potential to continue to re- build our country and construct new ideas for our people. We, as teachers, are proud of each of you and your accom- plishments this academic year. We realize your accomplishments are a reflection of yourselves and the extra effort you have brought forth in our school and communi- ty. We celebrate the progress that the entire community of De La Salle has ac- complished this year. We believe that the academic, athletic and activities pro- grams at De La Salle reflect clearly the ideal that we set as goals in a Christian Brothers' school. We believe that our schools should be characterized by a concern for each stu- dent. This concern encompasses the whole person: his family background, his temperament, his strong points, his special interests. Each student in our school is more than just another student who happens to attend De La Salle. We hope that our school will be a living com- munity where young people, coming from different backgrounds will educate one another by mutual understanding and re- spect, by acceptance of the uniqueness and limitations of each person, and by growth in the spirit of service and the practice of justice and charity. We believe that De La Salle does strive to provide the kind of atmosphere that can be conducive to the kind of com- ' A munity l've described. We at De La Salle firmly believe in you. You are our hope, our challengeg you are our brothers and sisters. With these thoughts we salute you graduating seniors and all you students. We believe it is important to acknowledge your accomplishments and to encourage you to become more and more faithful to your own potential to become loving and caring persons. The success of your to- morrows will be a reflection of the ideals and values you foster and nurture today, as students. God bless you all, Br. Striving to outdo all previous year- books, the staff Worked with fervor and dedication. Editors Mike Bruno and Steve Weston stimulated great school-Wide support of the book, including the large ad campaign. Newcomers to the school, Rich Grisius, Gerry Adams, and Carlos Martinez contributed greatly to the book's pro- duction, as Well as Paul Russell, Brian Hockel, Bob Moss, and Eric Sargeson. As the sun sets on yet another D. L.S. yearbook, the months of dedication begin to unfold. From the tireless Work of this staff emerged a quality yearbook. The evening began with a get-acquainted session, followed by a spaghetti dinner and dancing well into the night. The highlight of the evening was the costume judging contest. Some of the winners are pictured here. This function marked the beginning of a year full of activity and excitement. Thanks to the hard work of the joint Senior Class councils and their moderators, the 1976-77 school year turned out to be one of the best the class has had. For nearly a decade Marie wore BEAUCOUP DE CI-IAPEAUX as she fulfilled various roles as Principal's Secretary, Receptionist, Attendance Officer, Office Manager, Registrar, and Administrative Assistant. As fittingly noted in the Dedication of the 1974 SPARTAN, Marie also served--less officially but nonethe- less competently--as nurse, coun- selor, and Mother of Men . Above all, Marie has been a devoted friend and advocate. The entire De La Salle community is grateful to Marie for her years of dedication and especially for her love and friendship. We wish her continued success and happiness in the years ahead. Indeed, Zoo City will never be quite the same without her! Faculty Candids And now. . . for desert. This fall in Cross Country he was undefeated in C.A. L. dual meets as Well as being selected to both the All East Bay Team and the All Northern California Team. During this spring he proved him- self again as a superlative track athlete. He placed second in the ZA Division Finals which sent him to the North Coast Finals where he placed a solid fourth. From there he traveled south to U.C. L.A. for the state meets where he ran his fastest race, a solid 4:16:07 in the mile, but failed to make the finals by one place in his heat, and had to settle for a fantastic twelfth place. Paul Burke, as his hurculean accomplishments verify is obviously the Athlete of the Year. Junior arsity Soccer Although there is not a C.A.L. junior varsity soccer division, De La Salle's LV. Spartan's would have undoubtedly captured the title if it existed. Consistant halfback play from Vic Alemania and excellent coaching from Mr. Stocking led the team to a 6-3-l overall record. Fine seasonal performances from Dan Rosenburg, Dave Rettew and Phil Figone also aided in the overall effort. Despite disappointinglosses to Dublin and Livermore, the J. V. Spartans enjoyed a fine season by defeating Berkley, Granada and john Muir. The varsity is already planning on successfully defending it's C.A. L. title with the use of these players next year. The addition of Vic Alemania, Dan Rosenburg and Phil Figone to an already strong varsity crew of Matt Kelly, Curly Lynch, Brian Serafino, Grant C-olnick and Claudio Rosig will strengthen the schools hopes for a repeat of their title surge. Individual performances of freshman Ray Gallagher in the 100 yard dash and sophomore Don Pelletier in both the high hurldes and the 440. These con- tributions as well as a unified team effort made for a potentially great team. This type of involvement is sure to bring back to DLS the C.A.L. Although the team played third in the CAL, junior Vince Renaud and Senior Barry Serafino performed among the best in the league and provided the team with a 6-4 overall record. Renaud and Serafino waged an intra -team battle virtually at every outing to determine which Was actually The Best . Despite Serafino's league record low of 32, Renaud seemed to gain the overall team advantage. The team's upper-classmen were complemented by superlative under-classmen ability. Sophomores Vesty Enea and Tom Fitzpatrick provided the team with a fantastic amount of success as Well as potential for next year. All in all, the '78 team looks good, with elements from the very successful team this year. The school's undefeated reputation at home , Diablo Creek golf course, should be continued in '78 by returning team members Vince Renaud, john Heckenlively, joe Wilson and Tom Fitzpatrick, as Well as Vesty Enea and next year's recruits. These golfers are already looking forward to a Winning season next year, and hope to capture the CAL title from Moreau.
