Not only should he be able to live a successful life, but he also has the obligation to put into action the ideals he has formulated while still in school. The members of the senior class of 1958, during their high school careers, have been afforded the opportunity to develop a con- scientious attitude toward their responsibili- ties in life. The Catholic environment at De La Salle as exemplified in the class prayers, persever- ing work and the good example given by teachers and fellow students - these in ad- dition to the other influences present in a Catholic high school contribute to the forma- tion of each personis character. We as graduates have the obligation to uphold our ideals in a world which sorely needs the influence of Christian leaders.' May the class of '58 let their light shine before all men. Mr. Kosiek clarifies a problem presented by quizzical seniors, Leonard Winslow and Tom Tassone. Page 4 W KWH-41'3-,QHRQL ,V H., 9 ,nas Ip il..-n iwvdn' X I ., 3, ' Q a W-wif ,4 H L ., 'F 1? Still young at heart, Brother Vincent shows some of the qualities he learned as a HBrothers, Boyw himself. Through his many years of teaching he has influenced many students into following the Christian example that he gives. Nothing pleases him more than seeing a former student of his suc- ceed in later life. We, the senior class, gratefully dedicate the 1958 METEOR to Brother Vincent as a small token of our appreciation for his many years in the ser- vice of Christ. Brother Basil-Treasurer The little time which we spend in the business office is made very enjoyable by the presence of Brother H. Basil. As treasurer, it is his job to manage all of our financial mattersg indeed he does this skillfully. In his dealings with others, Brother Basilis sincerity makes even the most timid freshman feel at home. His warm smile is instrumental in aiding us to smile along with him. ln all of his duties Brother Basil has re- mained informal hut has gained the respect of the entire student body. His first day is an adventure which begins with a long and noisy bus ride. While the seemingly huge upperclassmen cheer- fully renew old acquaintances, he timidly retreats to the farthest corner of the bus. Finally, after having been rescued from the mob by a considerate upperclassman, he is start- led by the appearance of a massive rock struc- ture which will become his second home during the next four years. While he wanders aimlessly, searching for someone who will tell him what to do, his atten- tion is suddenly focused on a mass of clamoring neophytes, grouped around various advisory rosters. , Suddenly a firm hand clamps his shoulder and he is confronted by a smiling man garbed in an unfamiliar black robe. 6'What's your name, son? asks the cheerful voice. Welcome to De La Salle. Good luck, young man. Our advisory is next doorf, Despite the difficulties that future days will offer, the freshman is off to a happy beginning. Gazing into his mental crystal ball, the future senior foresees many interesting prospects for the coming year. Among the more cheerful events on the horizon is the Senior Prom. Even though he looks eagerly toward the happier moments of his glorious reign as a senior, he is deter- mined to make the final year his best. During the next year he will be in a position which will put his maturity to the test - he must prove him- self a credit to both his parents and his teachers. Page 48 eniqrs .. .,.. A ,,,. rf . . Records, however, never reveal the complete story of any athletic team. More important than wins and losses are the spirit of cooperation, agility of mind and self-discipline that result from teamwork and sportsmanship. SEASON'S HIGHLIGHTS The Heavies, record Q23-31 speaks for itself better than a thousand words of praise or commendation. Included among their contributions to the Meteors, trophy case are the De Paul Tourney Championship, the South Section and Catholic League Championships. Although losing to Marshall, the State Champs, the Heavies put up a tremendous fight before going down to defeat for the first time in twenty- three starts. As Coach Riska so well said, You boys have nothing to be ashamed of. You played the State Champions and gave a good account of yourselves. The prime factors contributing to De La Salleis finest season in over twenty years were the dedicated coaching of Ed Riska and Jerry Tokars and the ex- cellent spirit and ability of a hard-working team. Although the Meteors will be losing the services of four outsanding seniors fwarnock, Norville, Geers and Buedell, next year's varsity will be bolstered by ten promising lettermen. With only two returning lettermen, the squad, although definitely lacking in experience, made great strides as the season progressed. They played .500 hall the second half of the season, upsetting such powerful rivals as Mt. Carmel and St. Ignatius and giving champion Leo a real scare by shaving an eighteen point deficit to six points in the last two hectic minutes. Since next year's Juniors will have all five regulars returning, with a year of valuable experience behind them, Coach Riska is looking forward to an in- terestingn season.
