AUSTIN, F.S.C lecbca fLOIfl X- To Brother Austin we Seniors dedicate this book. We feel that X- X- the entire student body would want it so. Any appreciation of Brother Austin must be ineftectual. To tell, in something black and printed, what Brother has given to boys during his fifty years as a Religious-or what he has contributed to De La Salle during the past twenty-eight years, would be a feeble grasping for words. We must simply say: Brother Austin, you have given us a long time in your life, and good work. We remember. Yuri ST. IOHN BAPTIST DE LA SALLE Founder of the Christian Brothers and Father of Modern Pedagogy RELIGION . . MORALS . . CULTURE St. Iohn Baptist De La Salle instilled into his followers, the Christian Brothers, the principle of a thorough education for youth. Reading, writing, and arithmetic are fundamentally necessary to the proper education of every student, but so are religion and good citizenship as taught by the sons of St. De La Salle in their educational curriculum. Education. according to the Christian Brothers, means more than training the intellect alone. It means the training of the whole man: body, soul, and mind. A popular instruc- tor all during his eleven years at De La Salle, Brother Matirice is esteemed a friend by students from all classes. Ctaflag . . . Brother Iustin Matthew, F.S.C. Director Brother Nlatthew will soon complete his fourth year as Principal of De La Salle. As a capable and forceful leader. a sympathetic friend and progressive educator, Brother has long since gained the esteem of all students. His admir- able executive ability and complete un- derstanding of the student's problems insure him of a most successful term in office. 411 .4 jffllhg Brother L Damel F Q C Brother Lau renee joseph F S C Sub DIILKIOI Joo keeper Lxhm IH 79 R 1 1011 ei Brother L Ambrose F S C Brother Cormac F S C bophomore 2-I Freshm in ll R IQIOH Wcuodshop Enqln h Rehq1on NIeehan1e1lDr1xx1nq VZIOIOIN hlirthmq Band Blother H Vmeent F S C lox Brother Fmbar FSC Sophomore 22 Rehqlon Bloloqx Ceometrx Book tore i i I o . 1 -L. Secretary-Treasurer DEBATING -BUILDER OF SUCCESSFUL MEN The extra curricular activity at De La Salle that probably contributes the most toward the development of good, solid character and successful men in all fields of life is debating. Not only does debating teach a person to talk intelligently in front of large audiences without knocking knees and quivering voice, but also, and even more important, it teaches one to think on his feet and to develop habits of good reasoning. Too much stress cannot be laid upon the importance of developing these characteristics in all men, regardless of what work they plan to follow. ln all other activities the greatest importance is laid upon winning or losing, but in debating the decision makes little differ- ence, for win or lose, the experience is gained. De La Salle's debate team this year may well be proud of its many achievements and victories. Much of this success is due to the untiring work and effort of the teams new Moderator, Mr. Lewandowski, and the leadership of the teams officers, Mike McCarthy, Don Costello, and lack Walsh. At all school activities, members of this organization lead the Meteors in their cheers for the team. They were especially instrumental this season. in cheering the Meteors on to a very suc- cessful football season, and to the finals in both Lightweight and Heavyweight basketball. For four years a familiar figure at the scoring table at every basketball game has been Bernie Kelly. No detail of scoring ever escaped his alert eye. To replace this most faithful Meteor next season, will be a difficult task. Ar the clock for practice games was Paul Tarman, and for league games, Sam Crivellone. Bob Ganzer kept the Chicago news- papers well informed of the results of Meteor athletic contests as well as re- porting these events for The Victory. To inquiries like How many points did Punchy have that half? or How many longs did Apple hit against Leo? Bob always had the correct answer. N 31 a e' 1- egg 4. ...iv-19 1-2:--' 11 1. ,J X X fly -L. CONCERT BAND Un this Centennial year we observe still an- other milestone of service. Since 1938 it has been our good fortune to have such an accom- plished musician as Mr. Russell Harvey as the Director of our Concert Band. During this entire decade Mr. Harvey has worked unceas- ingly to bring this fine organization to its pres- ent peak of perfection. Each concert has been played with all the finesse of the best bands known in our country. During these years several hundred Meteors have come under the kindly influence of Mr. Harvey. Both the regard they have for their Director as well as the thoroughness with which he has trained them as musicians may be judged by their continued intense interest in the Band and by their success in the field of music. The Concert Band of 1948 has been another Champion! Page 63 lk: MR. HUGH O'KELLY Director of the Marching Band and of the Basic Band A OUR BAND INSTRUCTORS The baton is raised . . . and another Section Rehearsal begins. The hours of practice and instruction which every Meteor Bandman follows each week are guided by a superbly efficient group of musicians. Brother L. Paul BSC., is our popular Band Moderator. Mr. Arthur Kitti instructs the Flute section: Mr. Stanley Micus 4331. the clarinet section: and Mr. Sam Scharn, the oboes. Mr. Hugh 0'Kelly V363 serves as Director ofthe Marching Band and the Basic Band as well as instructor of the brass instruments. Seniors demonstrate a leadership that is both loyal and cooperative. Band Librarian, wrote early this year: HThe other day I was up in the bandroom just sitting and looking at the late afternoon sun passing through the windows and onto the chairs and walls. I had a very strange feeling. It just came to me that for four years l had been working in this room and would soon be leaving, perhaps never to return. What most of us learned in this room is invaluable, but at the time we never realized it. The sections above are typical of those which practice so faithfully in the bandroom. The clarinet section is led by Captain Frank Moran. Bill Schweiger captains the saxophone section and Frank Donnelly the flutes. Bob Kmieciak, Ray Clutter, and Doug Proctor work together in the reed section. lim Lawrence leads the trumpets and is assisted by Ryan, Kristof, R. Nashan Ifront rowlz and Bondi, Kelly, R. Kosinski, and B. Moore. Page 66 DE LA SALLE MARCHINC BAND One of the most outstanding organizations in school is our Marching Band. It has always maintained a splendid reputation for performance. This year its presentations were most successful and even surpassed those of pre- vious years. Through its many public appearances, especially at athletic contests, the Marching Band has brought honor and credit to the school. Largely respon- sible for this success is Mr. Hugh C Kelly V367 who has labored very hard to make our Marching Band the best in Chicago. Working with Mr. O'Kelly are Brother Cormac, FSC., Faculty Moderator, and Bob Kmieciak, student director. -r Hlfrrri , .3 'lr Art' .-U 'sf' 7,5 . 1 . ,,-gr... , W, 1,-5.2 Page 67 DE LA SALLE CLEE CLUB ln company with our Concert Band, the Glee Club presented several programs to other high schools during the opening months of this year.
