,I r' 164 ss- 's A D JU TSR 19- U 3 I 'V f'-5 X Hx I SENIOR CI ASS HISTORX four long and arduous years of study haye elap ed slnee the eighth grade classes of l9l9 were strangers to the school and to one another We all remember that first day when each lad yy earrng that uneaeplamable expression bordermg on shyness so pereeptlble on the openlng day of school and arrayed tn our best sauntered about the cld halls lrke a shlp wxthout a rudder After gathering ln the blg assembly room we were assigned to our respectlye classes On arrlytng rn our rooms a short talk was guen by the Brother ln charge on the reasons for our presence and wlaat would be expected of us durung our career at De I a Salle The faculty of the Freshman Department of that year consnsted of the Reyerend Brothers Isa dore Joseph I-Illary John Louls and Leo After the first half of the year the faculty dectded to change the course We were the first to be affected by thas decnslon whtch became operatlve after the Chrrstmas Holidays rn 1020 'I he presernbeel course obliged us to drop the commerclal sub,eets for the flrst tyyo years Thus the Freshmen of 19 had tl e good fortune of Leung enrolled rn the first fourth year class Durrng the summer a new perfectly equlpped phvslcs laboratory was rn stalled 'I he lirst week of September found us back as Junrors There were live classes three commercial and two sclentrfic The teachers were Brothers I-Iugh Gilbert Gabriel Jultus and Charles Brother I-Ienry replaced Brother Charles ln December when the latter left for St Louts Th1S same year the Alumm Assoelatron started a drtve to pay for the com pletlon of the new addttton and as a means they gave away a Ford each week Pr17es were offered to the class that sold the most ttckets each vyeel and to the tudent who drsy osed of the most ttckets When the drlye ceased the grand prwe Preszdent lxeefe McKenna The Senlor year began on the elghth of September w1tla three Senior classes two commerclal and one SCIQDIIITC The teachers of these vtere Reverend Brothers Hugh Gabr1el ano Jullus Not much actrvtty took place durmg the first half of the year and the Chrrstmas I-Iolldays came yery qutckly On our return January 3rd we found Brotlser I-Iueh had been transferred to drrect the destxnles of Cretan I-hgh School St Paul Minnesota Brother Ellear replaced Brother Hugh and one of his rmtnal steps was to launch a lrterary campatgn to arrange ways and means of getting up the Hrst year book of the old school And to ham 'ye ovte the success of thls Annual and also our Play The second step of Brother El7ear s untmng efforts has turned to the produc tlon of the play One of the Fight This rn Us perfectlon yxlll be one of the pleasant memortes ln our after years Now that the vlsta of Learmnfv has been opened to our vrew we hope that the good Chrrstlan Gentlemen yylll remember vsrth pleasure tlae great class of 23 In these memorles vue should neyer cease to cherlsh the prrceless lessons that the good Cbrlstlan Brothers haye gryen us Among the most nr clous are those taught by Rex erend Brother I au rence Dayad our Director who has done so much for us ard xx ho xxxll contlnue nn the future to ard us asf r as may be an his power Page 76 ff ' ' I T 9' g 44x,s f!
