Marking its 80th anniversary, De La Salle is still very much alive with a very strong school spirit which is felt by students and faculty alike. It is this same spirit that has kept De’s doors open for the past 80 years since they first opened on October 1, 1900, with 50 boys and three Christian brothers. Members of the same community of Christian brothers have been teaching the past 80 years and are still teaching today, assisted by other teachers dedicated to turning out students with Christian values and educational skills for productive future members of the world community. The first students were educated in the “C” building which was built in 1900 and served the school for 70 years. The education continued in the “B” building, built in the early 1920’s, and later in the “A” building, completed in 1959. De La Salle became coeducational in 1971. Because of decreased enrollment in all city high schools, De La Salle now uses the “B” building primarily, and rents out most of the “A” building. But De La Salle continues to look forward. With the help of God and the De La Salle faculty and alumni, De La Salle will continue its leadership in the community and its service on the rejuvenated Nicollet Island. An Archbishop’s Dream Comes True An unexpected donation of $10,000 from businessman Anthony Kelley set into motion the ten-year dream of Archbishop John Ireland to establish a Christian boys’ school in Minneapolis. Above: On the evening of February 28, 197f, the “G” building caught fire and had to be demolished. Right: The Brothers’ Residence. The first floor is used as the Home Economics Department. the Development Office, the Kelly Room. etc. 15
