Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1981 volume:

ISLANDER SPIRIT Here at De La Salle, the students have grown closer together. Because we are a small school, we tend to appreciate each other more and to relate to each other’s situations. Our spirit derives from this fact: that whatever we work at, we work with the Community and the Community of the school. Even though we are “Islanders”, we do not enter any challenge as an “Island” or alone. Whether it be the Marathon, Homecoming Events, the Class Retreats, the Treasure Island Festival, or any sports events, the students know that the real accomplishment happens by doing with others what they cannot do alone. So close ... yet with many serene scenes like this near the school. 4 Administration Keeps Things Moving Jim Ness. Dean Bro. Basil Rothweiler, Principal We here at De La Salle would like to give a special thanks to Shirley Kaiser who has dedicated many years of hard work to De La Salle. She will be remembered as a teacher, counselor, and academic advisor. She will be missed much and we wish her well in her future work. They preceded those efforts by getting sponsors who would pledge so much per mile finished. Later, it was important to collect their pledges. De's Islanders were among the estimated 35,000 that were part of the action in the eighth annual Marathon for Non-public Education. Right: Dan Molumby wins the competition for the most pledges. y, y. Ae a. . Above, the A Building, completed in 1959. Below, left, the B Building, built in the early 1920’s. Below right, the C Building, built in 1900 and used until 1971. 14 Marking its 80th anniversary, De La Salle is still very much alive with a very strong school spirit which is felt by students and faculty alike. It is this same spirit that has kept De’s doors open for the past 80 years since they first opened on October 1, 1900, with 50 boys and three Christian brothers. Members of the same community of Christian brothers have been teaching the past 80 years and are still teaching today, assisted by other teachers dedicated to turning out students with Christian values and educational skills for productive future members of the world community. The first students were educated in the “C” building which was built in 1900 and served the school for 70 years. The education continued in the “B” building, built in the early 1920’s, and later in the “A” building, completed in 1959. De La Salle became coeducational in 1971. Because of decreased enrollment in all city high schools, De La Salle now uses the “B” building primarily, and rents out most of the “A” building. But De La Salle continues to look forward. With the help of God and the De La Salle faculty and alumni, De La Salle will continue its leadership in the community and its service on the rejuvenated Nicollet Island. An Archbishop’s Dream Comes True An unexpected donation of $10,000 from businessman Anthony Kelley set into motion the ten-year dream of Archbishop John Ireland to establish a Christian boys’ school in Minneapolis. The score was DLS, 10; St. Bernards, 0. Coach Jim Ness was pleased with the varsity season. He felt the players were competitive, stuck with it. and hit hard. Next year looks hopeful with plenty of players fighting for varsity positions. Julie Salchert won two first-place medals and then helped Karen Je-sperson, Barb Brynstad, and Amy Eidem win third-place medals in a relay. Julie progressed to the state meet on December 5th. She didn’t win any medals there but did great just to be there and to get such good times. The team loosens up before a meet. The rest of the team did well in all the meets and should improve next year to win some medals. Although the team didn’t win any meets, its morale remained high the whole season. Coach Mark Salchert feels the prospects for the coming year are excellent with most of the team returning and willing to work hard to continue improvement. 22 Coach Mark Salchert gives a pep talk. Tuesday was Dress-up Day and many students wore something special. Wednesday was Hat Day. Thursday was Western Day. Friday, October 3, at 4:00 p.m. De La Salle hosted the game at the Benilde-St. Margarets field. A good crowd attended to cheer the Islanders on, but unfortunately the final score was: Holy Angels, 27; De La Salle, 6. 27 Once Upon A This year’s musical was based on an uproarious Broadway hit, the satirical version of an old fairy tale. It’s the “inside story’’ of what really happened to the famous princess who was so sensitive that she couldn’t sleep on twenty downy mattresses when one pea was placed underneath. There were many sub-plots, catchy songs, and much humor to entertain us on the way to the conclusion in which the kingdom is restored to order, all ends well, and everyone rejoices. The musical was performed Nov. 6,7, and 8. The cast sits on the stage while standing in front are others also important to the production. Brother Chris directed the musical, Mr. Fleming directed the band, Mr. Marsolek headed the committee that produced the stage set, and Mrs. Roth was in charge of the costumes. Many others were involved, including the band whose work was so important to the production of a musical. The Saturday evening performance was in the nature of a dinner theater, with the meal planned and prepared by Mrs. Kay Johnson. The meal was served in the Casanova Room, and afterwards the dinner theater audience adjourned to Room 120 to watch the musical’s performance. 28 Mattress Eden Svendahl is Lady Larkin and Steve Delehanty is Sir Harry. This year’s Snow Days had everything they needed to be a success — except the snow! In one of the driest winters ever, we held our Snow Days activities. What was lacking in snow was made up with enthusiasm. Basketball played a big part in the Snow Days activities with the boys’ varsity team de-feating Marshall U High and the girls’ team losing to the faculty! And so Snow Days ended, still with no snow, but leaving the school more of the school spirit and enthusiasm that has always been a part of “De”. WHITE DAY .. When And They Find It! Imagine going down a mountain of fluffy white snow at twenty miles an hour with icy wind brushing your face___or maybe practicing your parallels ... or going off jumps! That’s what De La Salle’s Ski Club did most Wednesday nights during the winter. Each member buys a season pass at the beginning of the year at Afton Alps. The group leaves at 2:30 in several cars. Sometimes they met in the chalet for dinner, but they can ski until 9:30. Although there wasn’t much snow this year, the skiers at “De” made full use of what there was, along with skiing on fake snow when it was cold enough. Brother Kenneth, Mrs. Shirley Kaiser, and Kent Evans. The younger set probably have the most fun of all. The 1981 Treasure Island Festival was a big success, raising over $31,000. One hundred and eighteen students sold $81 (or more) worth of tickets. They were called the 81 Club and were treated to a dinner at Arthurs Four Season Restaurant on Monday, February 23rd. The Treasure Island Festival is a good example of De’s community effort: students, faculty, and parents — all helping to keep De La Salle open and thriving. The main characters in the skit are played by Mrs. Sharon Roth, Brother Kenneth, Mr. Bill Johnson, and Mrs. Shirley Kaiser. Below: Lots of people have fun dancing. The yearbook is an important part of Islander spirit and life. For many people, it will hold the memories of teenage life, fads, fashions, people and places. It includes the ups, the downs, the wins, the losses, the scores, the records, the challenges, the conquerors, and the memories. We hope you enjoy this yearbook and that we’ve captured the memories of 1980-81. This year’s staff was not the most experienced. In fact, it consisted of mostly new members. Two new advisors, Mrs. Bernice Vlahakos and Sister Hilda Keller advised and helped the staff. Chris Graskow was the editor with several assistant editors to help her. Seated by the table, 1. to r.. Laurie Paquette, Nancy Martin, and Geralyn Meyer. The Islander Needs New Life. . . The Islander, our school newspaper, was a monthly publication in the past. This year, there were only two issues. One reason was Steve Roth’s busy schedule as head of the Development Office. Mary Herbert and Kathy Willner (pictured above) were the two main contributors. Others were: Joe Turpin, Joe Schneider, Shannon Oglesbee, Lisa Hofstede, Anita Hoffman, Joe Westphal, Sue Deidrich, Tom Siwek, Janet Thill, Colleen Strand, and Julie Salchert. We hear rumors that the Islander may resume its monthly schedule next year by becoming a student activity with a faculty advisor. We hope this materializes. 55 Student Union The Student Union gives students an opportunity for participation in the running of the school. All the students and officers in the Union are elected by their classmates. One big change this year was the Student Union sponsored change to optional attendance at masses. This was fairly successful in that attendance remained rather high. The Student Union also organizes many of the popular events at school such as Homecoming Week, the Sadie Hawkins, and Snow Days. The Student Union’s Executive Board: I. to r., Lisa Hofstede, Publication Manager; Barb Brvnstad, Secretary; Steve Delehanty, President; Steve Pumper, Treasurer: Not shown, Paula Larson, Vice-President. The planning took place on Wednesdays during activity period with Brother Martin and Mrs. Sharon Roth as advisors. As an added incentive for working hard, the group had a treat before they started each week to give them energy. Besides eating and planning all the masses, the liturgy committee also planned such special events and speakers as Charlie Brown (the inspiration for Charles Schultz’s cartoons), Brian Rudd, and helped with the 300th anniversary of the Christian Brothers. De La Salle’s concert band and select choir went on tour during April 1-4. Scott Fleming, Sr. Colette, and Br. Chris did the planning. There were many long bus rides to get places. The 1st began on the morning of April 1, as 2 buses loaded with both gear and people left De. We stayed at a Holiday Inn with good recreational facilities. The performances were well performed by the band and choir, and afterwards, we all did our sightseeing at restaurants, stores, parks, and museums. De’s bus .... with Angie Fried. Galen Klisch and Joe Baker and their dates 123 I’m going to miss this old school for a million different reasons---What an assortment of unforgettable characters I’ve met here! There were classmates I liked right from the start___and those who took a little getting used to. There were teachers that I loved-----and those I survived. Most of all, there were good friends I made here and all the together times we shared-----when we won, when we lost, and when we celebrated. It won’t be easy saying good-bye to this school____to the teachers ... to these friends ... I only know that wherever I go, whatever I do, the days I’ve spent right here will always be a really special part of my life .... a time to remember. A Time To Remember Forever . . . . Graduation!
