DELTA 1980 DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA VOLUME X LI 11 1 Where the River Parts Where the river parts there lies an island, a rock amid the rushing current. The Mississippi waters have the power to separate communities, yet, ironically, Islanders are brought together here from all parts of the city. The Island is small, but then so are we. Where the river parts, there is a unique kind of atmosphere. It is the results of a mingling of personalities; all Islanders, past and present, have contributed to the feeling of community and togetherness. This atmosphere, this sense of belonging, is De La Salle's main asset. It is upon this spirit that we rely for strength and growth. As long as it lives, so shall we, where the river parts. 2 Contents Page 4 . . . Faculty 9 . . . Fall 13 . . . Sports 35 . . . Winter 37 . . . Sports 53 . . . Spring 57 . . . Sports 67 . . . With the faculty chosen, we begin a new year. Some of the faces are the same familiar ones. Some are fresh and new All seemed anxious to welcome us back. Mr. Shrake couldn't wait to take attendance. Scott Fleming kept asking who the heck we were. Sr. Catherine told us we'd never make it. Mr. Ness tried out his new Mr. Gothman wanted to make a mature impression, authority. 8 Yet, somehow they got it all together to start us on a new year. And so we begin . . . 9 10 Marathon is a Success As usual the Marathon for Non-Public Education began at De with the pep rally in the auditorium. Various treats and prizes were offered for high profits. Pictured here are typical Marathoners: Snack stops appeared all along the route. Some old familiar faces were spotted, along with a vew new. Bro. Basil hopped onto his bike to join in the fun. Everyone was proud to be an Islander, especially when we spotted others in DLS t-shirts. Eric looks pretty tired here! n Fall is a time for getting reacquainted with the idea of school. We still have a lot of fun, but we do it with people from school and in school activities. Outside and inside, the DLS spirit becomes a part of us once more. The memory of summer remains, but it's time to crack down on the books. 12 VOLLEYBALL The DLS Volleyball team was led by a new coach and a few of last year's players, including All-Conference Kate Irmiter. The team enjoyed more attention from fans this year, giving them more incentive to do well. Right: Here is the lively crowd! Below: Nice serve, Colleen Strand. They predicted that they would go after only a few meets and sizing up the compeition. People may have thought they were dreaming, but they made it and tied for 8th place. Determination was the key throughout the year, and every meet was a display of speed and energy, from start to finish. Above: Kevin McKenna shows off his physique, along with the first place trophy from the De La Salle Invitational. Tired though he is, Mike O'Neill looks a bit worried about the outcome of the race. Right: Pat Osgood, De's 1 runner in the State Meet, heads for the finish line. Since he is only a sophomore, other runners will be hearing his name for a couple of years. 18 CC statistician Mary Johnson didn't need a major in Math. The team kept the scores low. Team and fans show that Islanders are 1!!!! Right: A few of the spectators talk to Coach Gary Myskevitz, outlining their strategy to mug all the runners from the other teams. This year's Sadie Hawkins Dance was a great success. The Student Union did a fantastic job with the decoration and organization, and all present made their own contribution to the rustic atmosphere. Big hits like visits to jail and Marrying Sam made Sadie a night to remember! A little Gospel inspiration to help pass the time in jail . . . Don't these men look melancholy? The team gathers around Coach Liske to listen to his strategy about what they should do to start scoring again. 38 Sue Shrake goes for the steal, but they make the pass anyway. Sue Shrake encounters tough defense as she is stuck in corner and looking for help. Mary Shrake gives Tracy Cerisier a perplexed look as she tries to figure out what the coach is saying to them. 39 « Frosh and Sophs Score in Buckets Freshman Squad: Paul Eidem, Ray Stephenson, Jaime Cassidy, Tom McDonough. This Year's Danceline worked hard to come up with new dance and music styles. They performed at assemblies (shown here) and at basketball half-times. With only eight members, the choice of dance routines was limited, but the girls seemed to overcome this difficulty and gave us a number of well planned dances. The Danceline has only been in existence on the Island for three years, but it is fast becoming another De tradition. 47 Grapplers Get Tough Front: Vince Wallander, Steve Williams, Bill Fimon, Greg Fimon, Brian Durand, Pat Osgood. Back: Jeff Sheetz, Steve Foster, Eric Mattson, Dave Voigt, Coach Steve Gothmann, Keith Parkes, John Meyer, Brian Scott, Mike Ingalls. Going . . . Going . . . 48 Gone, as once again the Islander gets ready to pin his man. Every minute of practice helps. This is a familiar sight during wrestling season. Newly Founded —The DLS Ski Club 49 The Ski Club was something new this year. Members skied every Wednesday, and the climax of the season was a trip to Thunder Bay, Canada. The Christmas Concert The singers A Holiday Inspiration . . . and the musicians 50 Convocations Here we have a career seminar, sponsored by the Counselling Department. At right, Mr. Cunningham describes black outlook and philosophy. This talk was sponsored by the Social Studies Department. Departments within the school sponsored a number of convocations this year. These enabled students to gain outside knowledge into a few things that the school doesn't have in its curriculum. LUNCH! Parents of students gave their time to assist with the hot lunch program. 51 The End Draws Near Warm weather returns and we are all attracted to outside activities. Juniors and, especially, Seniors realize that if they don't get their work in, they may not make it to graduation. Making up time for Bro. Chris can be a killer. What's the matter with you Dan? You've got plenty of work to do! Mostly though, Spring is a time for CUTTING LOOSE! 52 53 Treasure Island Bring in $ As usual, the Faculty put on their annual Treasure Island skit at the Kick-Off assembly. This year's was a portrayal of classroom life, controlled only by the Teacher (Student Union President Diane Kucala). This annual event is held in an effort to get Students involved and enthusiastic about the drive and festival. Here we see faculty members in their roles as students before (upper right) and after (center right) the chaotic performance. The Festival itself included a variety of activities: Monte Carlo Night, Bingo, International foods, crafts, children's games, and dancing in the Beer Garden to the music of the Happy Wanderers. 54 Mm-Mm good! At left: Treasure Islanders dance to the beat of the Happy Wanderers. Above: Mrs. Mruz is led, exausted, off the dance floor by her son Dennis and Greg Kaiser. 55 Ann, Katie, and Bill doing what they do best. .. Chowing Down! 56 SPORTS De Slams Hard in Baseball Our swingers enjoyed a number of successful games this year. Some were victorious. Some were not. But all were well played, both in offense and in defense. It was a team and a season for the Islanders and Coach Johnson to be proud of. Since the team was absent when pictures were taken (out on the field, no doubt) the members are listed here and we've tried to get as many of the guys into the pictures as possible. Six members scored at the District meet, for a total of 33 points. Louis Wojack placed 4th in the 800 m. and Kevin Mc-Kennea placed 5th in the 2 mile, for a total of 6 points at Regions. Sadly, we were unable to get a team picture. The photo day just happened to be on the same day as one of the team's meets. However, congratulations to all those who participated. B-Squad Baseball Again a badly planned photo-taking session was the problem here. In fact, it was the same day! We're really sorry guys, but we promise to get ya next year. (Just make sure that you all go out again!) 62 Spring Sports Banquet After all the efforts put out in the athletic area-the victories, the defeats, and the overall sense of achievement-the teams and coaches came together for a final celebration meal. Food was served buffet style, Mrs. Johnson at the kitchen end. Above: Steve Roth introduces the evening's entertainment. Center: The comedy team of Mark Johnson and Rusty Hinges had everyone in stitches. Here Rusty pitches a baseball to a young aspiring athlete. Below: Just one of the many teams recognized at the banquet, the wrestling squad lines up to receive their awards. 63 Seniors Are Recognized Above: Bro. Henry and Mrs. Kaiser handed out awards. Here, members of NHS received their certificates and congratulations. They would wear gold braid at graduation. The Senior Mass and Breakfast is an annual event. This year, Seniors and their families attended mass at Our Lady of Lourdes church. Father Larry returned to celebrate, and members of the Senior class chose the songs and gave the readings. Afterwards, everyone trouped over to De for breakfast and the re-issuing of Senior Awards. The speaker was Charlie Brown. Carnation Day (Valentine's Day) was a huge success. 68 Speech and Debate Return Although not a new activity on the Island, the Speech and Debate teams enjoyed renewed popularity. The members were, for the most part, upperclassmen. Some members used their new skills to participate in the High School Bowl, where De La Salle challenged Concordia High School. Participants in Speech and Debate: Anita Hoffman, Joan Banks, Carol Owen, latresia Childers Standing: Randy Ridenour, Diane Kucala, Mike McGuire, Mr. Denis Wadley, Kevin McKenna, Bill Fimon, Barry Peterson Mr. Wadley has made a great effort to bring about the return of many traditional activities that have slipped out of the De La Salle curriculum. In addition to rejuvenating Speech and Debate, he also offers Honors Courses, including Shakespeare and Philosophy. 69 At. Many others, not shown here, contributed also to work on the paper. This year's newspaper was more well-organized than in the past. The paper has grown into its former 4-page self. Steve Roth, as moderator lent much of his nonexistent time. Ann Vos (right) was the Islander's moving spirit, filling her role as Editor, and doing the work of half the staff. If there was no news, Ann made some up! Far Right: Steve Roth and his enthusiastic smile. 70 ,«tr The National Honor Society Mr. Anderson, as moderator of the National Honor Society, started out the year with, You can be either an active or a passive Society ' Well, the unspoken choice was evidently passive. The yearbook had an optimistic beginning, with a comparatively HUGE staff. Many were discouraged, however, when they found that they were expected to finish the '79 book. The Activity Period was a help, in that it brought a few new members, but was discontinued at the critical point-the last few weeks. Summer meetings became necessary, but few people were faithful into the warm weather. Somehow we DID get through it. (a little late but better late than never!) Right: Room 227 became the yearbook workroom. Desks were rearranged and everything was brought down so that we'd have it all together. 74 Sue O'Neil tries to figure out what the heck all this mess is about. These people were commonly seen dodging around corners and into classrooms. They came up with a multitude of excuses for not having their pictures taken. But the Delta staff searched until they had gone through every possible picture, and we're gloating over the fact that we did find at least one picture of each and every one of these people. You will notice, of course, that a few of these shots were taken at graduation. You will also notice that some of our dodgers still thought they could hide behind those ahead of them in line. This year's retreat was at Camp Wilder, and consisted of a variety of activities. Raiding the kitchen was a favorite. Jon Shelley, what are you trying to hide? Many of the girls chose to spend the night inside the cabin. Some spent day and night making themselves lovely. Other girls, and some guys chose the great outdoors. Camping equipment consisted of tents, flashlights, and sweatshirts, to keep warm. Canoeing on the lake was a much sought-after form of relaxation. Bro. Kenneth was head man in the canoeing area, using his own hand-crafted canoe. He was aided as counsellor by Sr. Catherine and Gary. Look at Mike O'Neill! He's in the kitchen again, trying to look innocent, this time with Mike Suek right behind. The line was quickly filled with hungry seniors each time the dinner bell sounded. Mary Johnson joins in on the gossip with Frisbe in hand. 94 95 . . but, when do we get to the Underclassmen? No, not yet. These are Seniors. No, these are teachers. No way. These are alumni. The 1980 Junior-Senior Prom had everyone in a good mood, as they danced to the sound of Snaps at the Columbia Park Chalet in N.E. Minneapolis. The sounds of the band literally shook the walls. Refreshments, provided by the Student Union, consisted of cake, snacks, and the ever-popular punch. The dance, as usual was a success and smiles were everywhere. Grinning here is Mary Johnson. 118 Below: One of the cuter Prom couples. Rich Dziuk and Brenda Messer. The party scenes were common, both before and after the dance . . . Well, did they really think we spent all that money on tuxes and dresses for only four hours? Above Left: Ann is pretty bored, and can't wait to get going but . . . Judy and Mike (Above Right) are having a lively time in the kitchen. Karen steals the show with her acrobatic tongue, and even the photographer gets into the picture. Below: Diane is taken by surprise by the click of the camera, arms loaded down with all the usual Prom gear. Mike waits impatiently, and Dan “can't wait to get Jiat tie off! 119 All the Grandeur of Graduation The confusion finally subsided as the march down the aisle began. The new Student Union led the procession, followed by the seniors and faculty, trying to remember to keep separated by two pews. Bro. Robert returned to act as Master of Ceremonies. (Remember those Sophomore Bio classes?) Salutatorian Sue Shrake and Valedictorian Diane Kucala gave speeches. Bro. Basil introduced Bishop John Kinney who gave the Commencement Address. Some of the seniors listened attentively. Some did not. At last it was diploma time, but only after shaking hands with the Bishop, Bro. Basil, Mrs. Kaiser, and Mr. Anderson could a graduate return nonchalantly to his seat. Bernadette was honored as De's 10,000th graduate, and received yellow roses. Pat danced, a new form of prayer, to the Chorus' rendition of “You'll Never Walk Alone. The Benediction which followed was led by 8ishop Kinney and Msr. Coates from Ascension parish. Katie gave this Senior Farewell and distributed gifts of appreciation. And when it was all over, the crowd of families and friends spilled out onto the steps of the Basilica to congratulate the ALUMNI! 120 121 122 Nineteen-Hundred Eighty. It will only happen once. For some, it was a time for new experiences, new friends, and a new and different school. For others, the year brought more responsibility, more confidence, and a greater sense of belonging to the close-knit community that IS De La Salle. For De's seniors, it was the final stretch in the race for the end. For many, it was the best part of four years. For still more, it signified the end of Brother Chris's class! But for everyone, 1980 has not yet expired. Nineteen-Hundred Eighty will only happen once. But where the river parts, the Island and De La Salle will exist for many year to come. Now, at last, our book draws to a close. It has been a year of struggle, a year of conflicting interests, and a year of debt for the yearbook staff. But even more than these, it has been a year of activity, a year of involvement, and a year of accomplishment. Most of all, it has been a year to remember. I hope that through our work, we have captured the spirit of the 1979-80 school year in these pages. I hope that our pictures bring back your memories. A special thanks to Mr. Dave Santos of H. Larson Studios for his time and his help in the photography area, and to our Herff-Jones representatives, Richard Drew and Joan Pakorney, and to all the members of the staff who actually worked to bring this book about.
