Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1978 volume:

De is: A beginning for a life of Christian service. An institution devoted to the lives of many-young people living in the city. A city-school removed from the city by an island, yet an integral part of Minneapolis. To De La Salle, still thriving after 76 years of existence, we celebrate 1977-78 in words and pictures. This is . . . DELTA 1978 A Look Throuph De’s Windows DE LA SALLE DELTA Volume I4I 1977-78 1 A Look Through De La Salle- a look through our windows, a view of our friends, facility, events, and ourselves. Windows are an important part of life at De, as they foresee the future- in the city, school, jobs, and life itself. 2 De’s Windows 3 A look at De La Salle during Pall 1977 showed a school changing in many ways, A new administration, led by the new principal, Brother Basil Rothweiler, was formed. There were several changes in the faculty, and the Class of '77 was replaced by the Class of f8l. But the more things changed, the more they stayed the same. Outside of cross country, fall sports were down. Homecoming remained an exciting, spirited week, and the school itself was in good shape as it prepared for its 77th year. A close-knit, spirited team of 20 runners ran extremely well all year, never finishing below 9th in a meet. While the team missed the state meet by just two places, the year, as a whole, proved to be one on which the entire program could build for a long time. UPPER RIGHT: Number one runner T. Their work days consist of much more than a string of endless classes to teach, father, De's faculty and administation all seem to take a special caring in how our school runs, and, how our students are doing. Though they do not always get the praise they deserve, they have earned it, and should receive it. Administration Four out of the five members were new this year. New to the island were principal Bro. Basil Rothweiler, one of the most respected of all Christian Brothers, and counselor Ruth Stoeger who quickly fit in and began her role of guiding students. New to their roles were Shirley Kaiser who switched from counselor to the very busy role of administrative assistant, and Jeff Hudson who added the role of Bean of Students to his job as a math teacher. Still in the same job was Kent Evans, the school's non-stop recruiter. Some new administrative policies were hotly debated with the student body, but, one thing remained clear, the administration really worked hard to make De a better place. 29 Arts And Skills George Utecht Mary Nigon Mike Casey Dean Kopperud The Arts and Skills department of the facility is comprised of all the teachers of courses designed for a student’s individual skills- including art, music, home ec, phy ed, Spanish, business, skill building and library. Wagner Now, Time To We are done looking through De's Windows. 1977-78 was an interesting year at De, and looking through the windows, seeing what was going on, was equally interesting. Nov;, ic is time to look out of De's windows, out into the city where De students return to after high school. For 112 seniors, their high school journey is ended. For the rest of the student body, it is a journey with one more hill to climb, one more curve to handle. Their journey has paused for now, however, and it will not begin again until 1978-79. 110 Look Ahead ❖ 1 ••• ••• ••• ••• ••• ••• V V v • :• •:« n • ❖ ❖ • • • • V ❖ • • 111 It’s Over 1977-78 is now finished For the seniors, it was the final year of the important chapter in life called high school. For the juniors, it now means that they are the leaders. For the sophomores, it is now their turn to accept much of the responsibility at De. For the freshmen, it was a year in which they began their high school life. For the Delta it was an anxious year in which confusion and panic sometimes seemed to be the order of the day, but, in the end, all worked out. And for DeLaSalle, year number 77 was yet one more in an impressive history. It was quite a year. It now is memory. 112 hx X V t • A i f : !
