VOLUMN: 4O DeLoSqlle is on Island in the River DeLaSalle, a place, DOWN BY THE RIVERSIDE, is home for the Islanders. The river and the Island have been very important to us. The water is a sign of: life, refreshing to the spirit. On a spring 01' fall day, students can sit in t e courtyard, or gaze out a window and see :1 barge float slowly by, or watch traffic on the bridges. The river offers educational benefits as well. The students are given the Opportunity to study the river and :uts constant ,flow of history. DeLaSalle is a Special school, thanks to the river. It is the only Cathohc High School in the inner city. Our motto: A BRIDGE WITHIN THE COMMUNITY, stresses our role in the center of population and business. Islanders have come to the river for seventy-six years. America celeblu ated its two Hundred year old existence. The midwest suffern ed through a long drought that, destroyed many crOps. Minneapolis Opened .1 new park on our Island, as a Bicentennial present. to the city. The DeLa Salle Band took advantage of the new entertainment center anti used it .for a fall concert. The school planner a major fund raising drive to raise Seventy Thousand Dollars. The Stuient Union worked over the smnlner to reorganize. Students worked and played, knowing that. at. the end of. Summer they would return to the Island in the river to begin a new year. It is a state wide effort to raise money to support this alternative in education. At DeLaSalle we use use the money as scholarships for all those who participate. Cold caused fuel shortages and some places even went to four day weeks or closed completely. Firemen had to battle this and the fire that wrecked several warehouses near DeLaSalle. The halls at De were cold, but we stayed in school and watched our basket- ball team have a victorious season , which ended by winning second place in District Tournament play. The swimming team took second in Regional competition and tenth in State. Studying kept the rest of us busy, if not contented.
