Zmuda Cross Country Under the direction of rookie coach, Gary Myskevitz, De La Salle's cross country team faired reasonably well this past fall. Unfortunately, due to Kevin Doty's weak ankles and the team's general inexperience, the harriers didn't reach their peak until late in the season. The team finished with a 4-9 record, winning its second consecutive City Title by beating Mpls. Lutheran twice and Minnehaha Academy once. At the State meet, the Islanders finished 10th out of field of 22 teams. Dave Renneisen finished 13th and received an individual trophy. With only two graduating seniors. Captain Kevin Doty and Tom Harrigan, the harriers look to a more experienced and winning season next year. Irondale later went on to win the Public School Swimming Championship. With the cancellation of the independent state meet, the team finally found a meet to peak at Loyola Academy in Chicago. The graduation of Bill Freeman, Tom Casey, Jeff Wheeler and George Sutton means the team will be losing some good swimmers. However, with plenty of talent and experience being retained in the under classmen next year's team can look forward to another great season. Six foot six captain Gary Hipwell was unable to even practice this season due to an illness he had last year. And other players missed one or more games due to injury. Despite the absence of Hipwell, the team had a winning record at Christmas. After the break, the team appeared inconsistent at times, but managed to put two good games together against Blake and Breck in the regionals to gain a state berth. In the first game at Augsburg, the Islanders lost to a superior Edgerton Christian team 62-51. With their spirit broken, they also lost the consolation game to Brady 62-57. All but three members are returning. The graduating seniors are co-captain Frank Meyers (All Conference), co-captain Tim Fristrom (Honorable Mention), and Tom Rainville. The Minneapolis Conference title was determined at the Cretin tournament as opposed to the traditional won-loss record. Although the team finished in third place, Dave Wrzos and Shawn Durand were successful in taking first places in their respective divisions. At the regional tournament De finished third behind Benilde and Grace with Wrzos again finishing in first place along with Tom Barringer. At the State Tournament, the Islanders took a respectable seventh in the field of twenty-one teams. And yet again Dave Wrzos took first place in his division. On his way to capturing his state championship trophy, Wrzos amassed the remarkable record of 28 wins, no losses; after 28 matches his record showed only one match point was scored against him.
