They are from Iho broadest cross section ot Catholic youth. Jose Misael Carpio h. San Salvador, El Salvador Central America, quite a ways to go to school. De La Salle is not a school lor the affluent or privileged. If is a school that, in its highest ideal, would seek to afford a complete education, scientifically perfect, compassionately orientated and designed to have each student realize his full spiritual and intellectual and physical potential. This task has been carefully watched over for the past seventy years by the Christian Brothers. 39 De La Salle has a unique and distinctive position in tho sphcro of education In our metropolitan area, particularly in Catholic education. It has set and achloved standards ot excollonco that are remarkable. Its achievements are even more remarkable when one considers that to this time. Oe La Salle has done It on its own. 40 I 111 De La Salle has been a loader and an innovator: in scheduling, in language programs, in science and mathematics. In social awareness. In art and music, in sports o all kinds and civic responsibility, in many other areas it has pioneered to bring the very tinesl in quality education to its young men. Encountered with the usual difficulties, the Islander cagers had their ups and downs. Bill Johnson, in his first year as head coach at Oo. had only four returning tettormon as a nucleus. The Islanders opened Conference play with a victory over Rochester Lourdes but then lost four in a row at the hands of St. Thomas. Benildo. Austin, and Hill. With the addition ol experience the Islanders won their next three gamos before bowing to Cretin 56-48 and finishing the first halt of the season. The second halt of the season could muster only a .500 4-4 record with victories over Rochester. Benilde. Winona, and Brady. The highlight ol tho regular season was when the Islanders defeated a heavily favored Benilde team by the score of 51-38 on their home court. The Islanders entered tho rcgionals against Benilde for region three. The Islanders gave it a gallant try, but the Islanders missing tholr ace rebounder Mike Julius, they bowed to the Red Knights 66-50. Individually. Pat Pavelko. The grnpplcrs finished their regular season on a high note but their tournaments ware very disappointing. After a good start the team slumped and finished the season with a 6 win. 9 loss record. But the team was much better than their record shows. With the help of some sorry Individuals as referees they lost four meets by two points. The grapplers proved they were no pushovers by defeating the number 1 Hill team, and their win over the number 2 Benilde wrestling team In the final meets. The tournaments were different and the Islanders did not fulfill their expectations. In the regionals, Oe placed fourth In a field of seven, with wrestlers Osmonson. Ripley, and McDonald taking firsts; Durand. Luxem, and Gross thirds; and Montague and Lupino fourths. Sending six men to the State meet was not enough, however, as captains Osmonson and Ripley were upset In their title bids. Osmonson took third and McDonald fourth. The outlook now for the next year is fairly good. Losing only five seniors—Osmonson. Ripley. Lupino. Hollick. and McDonald the team looks strong for the next wrestling season. especially in the low and middle weights. Led by Luxem. Gross.
