The '68 season was marked by the outstanding leadership of captains Jim Brown and Greg Johnston. McEachern's power-house offense was led by the highly talented backfield of Cummings, Rodger. MacTavish. and Lewis, with an able group of receivers in Taylor. Johnston and Hennessey. The offensive front five of Brown, J. Julius, Basara, Focht and Soltys must be given a word of praise with three members making All-Conference, and the other two receiving honorable mention. Mr. Miller was responsible for the performance of an outstanding defensive unit which allowed an average of only 7 points per game. The season was marked by a number of memorable goal line stands from a team that refused to give up. The defense was led by signal-caller BERNIE LITECKY, one of the most aggressive players in the conference. Although hurt by injuries, the team was aided by the hard-charging play of such men as Rosener, Miller. Charboneau. Costello. Shelito and Wittman. The success of this years team would not have been possible without the Miraculous Marauders and their captain Rollie Theiler. Every team in the conference remembers well the relentless, charging Marauder kickoff squad which often broke a game wide open with its jarring head hunting tactics. The 1968 De La Salle football team brought football out of obscurity and back into prominent ranking at De where it belongs. Head coach Robert McEachern and his fine staff of Mr. Jerry Miller and Mr. James McCormick must be highly commended for molding these fine individuals into a team that finished second in the CCC and third in the Catholic State rankings with an overall 8-1 record. 60 Focht holds on as Rodgers moves through. Mr. Cronin and Mr. Olson took a group of rookies and finished with a respectable 2-2-1 record. The high point of the season was marked by a 7-0 victory over an always tough St. Thomas squad. The offense was led by quarterback Tom Peters and running backs Albert Briscoe. Joe Kennedy, and Kevin Caughflin. The defense was marked by the strong performance of Captain Joe Kennedy at linebacker. and Tom Van Sloun, Richard Diaz and Mike Riley on the line. The 1968 freshman football squad was relatively small in numbers, but in spirit, and determination ranked high with the teams they played. 65 DE TAKES CONSOLATION HONORS Back Row: T. Costello, D. The 68-69 basketball team thrust their hearts into their efforts, and took the Consolation trophy away from Cretin 47-46. With this victory, some of the disappointment of a grueling season was forgotten. The season started well with two victories over St. Thomas and Rochester. A lopsided loss to Benilde upset De's momentum for any championship. The rest of the season had its ups and downs, with De winning its last seven conference games going into the State Tournament. An opening game loss to Austin wiped out tournment hopes. De La Salle placed two hoopsters on the All-Conference team: Jim Ihnot and Bob Bauer. What this year's wrestling team lacked in talent it made up in individual determination and team. Lacking a 95 pound wrestler for most of the season, they still were able to put together a winning season under the leadership of co-captains Shannon Kennedy and Dave Godlewski. By working as a team, they captured third place in the C.C.C. with a 4-5-1 record and a 7-6-1 overall record for the year. Coached by Mr. McCormick in his initial season and assisted by Mike Osmonson, the wrestlers placed first in the Regional tournament with 94 points compared to second place Benilde with 84 points. Contributing towards these points were W. Olson. D. Ripley. L. Scheele. S. Kennedy, and D. Osmonson with first place finishes. Placing second were D. Luxem, D. Godlewski. P. Zwolski, and C. The accomplishments of this finely tuned team can only be reflected by the won-lost record of 1 7 and 5. The only drawback of the season was losing the private school state meet by a mere few points. Three big grudge meets put the Islanders on their way to blazing a trail across the record book. The first and most triumphant was the defeat of St. Thomas Academy, after losing to them for thirteen consecutive years. The second was the trouncing of Blake, who squeaked out a one point win over the weakened Islander team last year. The third major victory was the resounding defeat of Robbinsdale High School. This Lake Conference team placed 7th in the public school state meet and was coached by the 1967-68 Islander coach. This Islander team was bouyed with many extremely talented swimmers. However. it was severely handicapped by the lack of depth which is necessary to make a championship team. In spite of this crippling condition, the De La Salle swimmers turned in an outstanding performance for the season. Two new school records were scored by T. Wheeler. D. Jones. Dennis Jones and C. Hussman in the 160 medley relay and G. Ranczka. M. Schrauth and D. Jones in the 400 freestyle relay. Congratulations are definitely in order for Coach Carroll Gus Gustafson and his team co-captains Senior Chris Hussman and Junior Tim Wheeler, for a season which will long be remembered by the De La Salle Swimming team. 76 State Champs and Captains T. The high point was a fine, hard fought win over Cretin. The individual standout this year was senior captain Mike Becchetti. Playing in the goals, he turned away as many as fifty shots per game. For his fine efforts Mike was placed on the All-Conference honorable mention squad. He was joined here by junior center and captain elect, Todd Rofuth. Throughout the year the team did express the spirit and desire that Coach Olsen worked for. With a little hard work Coach Ralph Olsen should bring his 69-70 hockey team to the State Tourney. 'AVW STU STUDENT COUNCIL O z 3 0 a H Z w Q The 1969 Student Council encountered some difficulties that other years at De did not present. First of all this is our first year of open campus and the students are very free. During the past years when most of the students were here all day such things as spirit and drive were evident in different ways. We've got lots of spirit and go left and are discovering the various ways to recognize it. Many students sit around and criticize and accuse the rest of us for being irresponsible and poorly organized or being filled with apathy; but this doesn't improve the situation. Thus, we put the wheels in motion with HOMECOMING. Homecoming was well planned and a big deal. However, the weather was a bit disappointing. The Soc-hops throughout the year featured some of the biggest names in the business but the crowds, well, they were something else. The high point of the Student Council activities was SPIRIT WEEK. This event was the big step in restoring enthusiasm and improvement in the new spirit of De. We sold various buttons, held contests and created SPIRIT. The 1969 elections were held earlier in the year so that the new Executive Board members could learn from and work along with the senior board members before being entrusted with the running of this biggest of the Student organizations—its COUNCIL. In an effort to centralize the responsibility and authority within the Executive Board constitutional amendments that eliminated the offices of Committee Co-ordinator and Commissioner of Academic Affairs were ratified. Thus, the number of offices was set permanently at six. 96 Mr. Smokie Clements puts some life on the senate floor. During the weekend of November 24, the Dramatics club put on Mo-lier’s THE MISER . THE MISER was presented at the Tyrone Guthrie Theatre two years ago, but was never produced by a high school in this area until now. The cast was spearheaded by Joe Kudla, Mike Wolf, and Mary Gray from De with Collen Wold from Regina and Kathy Johnson from Holy Angels. The scenery for the play was prepared by Brother Giles and the Art Dept. 100 Here's another fine mess you gotten me into. Standing: Joe Kudla, Micky Short. Kathy Volmer. Gail Terry. Mark Gray. ISLANDER The 1968-69 Islander staff a small hard working group put out 1 3 issues of the paper, or one about every three weeks. The issues included a Back to School Extra”, state Tournament Edition and an April Fools Special. Throughout the year the staff tried to provide the school with not only De La Salle news but points of interest within the community. The Editorial board had problems securing a large working staff of writers. However, through dedication and reorganization the responsibility was centralized in a small group and the quality of the paper improved. By the end of the year the ISLANDER had re-established itself as a paper highly regarded by the student body and faculty. Sports editor J. Elfelt, Distribution M. Gould, Administrative editor B. Jean Claude Taus SKI CLUB Hot Dog Schmitz For the second straight year, the De La Salle Ski Club has successfully held trips. Because of financial difficulties, there was no set membership, yet thirty De men combined with forty-five Regina girls for a week-end trip to Sugar Hills. It was a real success, with only a few minor casualties. The moderator was Brother Arthur, he was aided by seniors Marc McMullen, Lee Kurimay and Dick Schmitz. Cully-deer The Bomber, Brother Giles. HELP! RADIO KDLS A common daily occurance for the past two years has been KDLS, De’s own radio station. It has helped cheer up many a dreary day by making announcements, small jokes and playing music from 8:00 to 8:20. “Disc Jockeys Marc McMullen, Mark Mallander and Le Kurimay began last fall, continued throughout the year to make your day a little brighter by starting things off well in the early morning. Le Kurimay, Marc McMullen and Mark Mallander. CHORUS In his second year as director, Brother Chad introduced new dimensions and ideas in sound to the De La Salle Chorus. Emerging from Rm. 123, came the sound of 78 strong voices lead by Brother Chad to spread the good news of De’s talented Chorus throughout the city. The Chorus not only appeared at various banks, parishes, hotels and shopping centers, but at Regina and the Little Sisters of the Poor as well. Highlights of the year were, of course, the Fall. Winter and Spring choral concerts. Musically speaking, the Spring Concert proved to be a tremendous success. On May 1,2,3 the chorus was rewarded in a way and also able to spread the fame of De La Salle all the way to Winnipeg, Canada. The great success of the '69 Chorus was needless to say due to the voices of the men making it up but also to the patience and ability of the director, Brother Chad. THE DE LITES” .. F. Stone, M. MONOGRAM CLUB This year’s Monogram Club had done much to improve itself. Run by Co-presidents Rick Lovett and Dave Godlew-ski. it has successfully brought itself out of debt, and has actually raised over one-hundred dollars towards next year’s sweaters. The Monogram Club ushers at the assemblies and other school sponsored events, and sells pop at social activities. The money received for this is used to pay for a percentage of each sweater. The '68-'69 Camera Club, under the leadership of Brother Andrew Call and president Tom Parzyck, has been instrumental in capturing the events around the school. They have been seen at all sports events, all of the interschool functions; and just plain goofing' 'round” with camera in hand. All of the club's twenty members have their own equipment for taking and developing their pictures. The club’s main task is to supply the Islander” with a variety of pictures. This year, as in the past, the Camera Club has taken many of the semi-formal dance portraits, as well as all of the student body’s I.D. photos. m CONTEMPORARY MANN f I The Contemporary Man Film Seminar had another successful year, headed by Bro. Jerome. It provided students from De. Regina, St. Margaret’s. St. Anthony, and Benilde with touching and meaningful films and a chance to discuss them afterwards. The films concerned such things as human suffering, the struggle for maturity, the power of love, and the meaning of life. This is another chance for De students to broaden their learning process and become true Christians. 112 Moderator Bro. Jerome. The National Honor Society, consisting of 40 members under the leadership of President John Hughes and Moderator Bro. Chad, was active in a few events around school due to bettering their organization. The high points of the year were the induction ceremony, held for the new Junior members, and the dinner for the Seniors. All things considered, this years N.H.S. was successful in laying the foundation for next years N.H.S. S W. Rusin, Tres. J. Hughes, Pres. J. Elfelt, V.-Pres. W. Tisel. Sec. t • Hey You Cut That Out. A familiar sight at major athletic events is the Cheerleaders. They are easily seen in front of the crowd with their matching shirts, psychedelic megaphones, and big bass drum, prodding both the crowd and the team with their enthusiasm. At the beginning of the season, co-captains Marc McMullen and Mark Gray led their squad to every football game, ending with De’s victory over Benilde. Then, it was on to basketball and to the State Tournament. The Cheerleaders, though few in number did much to lead the crowds in their backing of the teams. Delta ’69 really steps out in style—in fact, one step ahead of our other yearbooks. The able staff worked hard and had the determination necessary to make Delta ’69 the best ever. Spearheaded by Dave Kemp and moderator Brother Giles the staff took the first step in September. The weeks went past as we busily recorded our year mostly with the camera for us to remember. We rolled up roll after roll of film and replaced several strobe cords and made many a trip to Scherling-Pletsch Studios and kept taking the giant steps necessary to produce what you're looking at and reading now. The deadlines were met even though they almost always came up at the wrong time and Brother almost pushed the panic button; especially at 1 1:45 when we were 6 pages short for a midnight mailing. But we stuck with it all the way and continued to step in style until we walked ourselves right out with another book. Delta '69. I I've really got three pa-doggies in my mouth but they can’t show that much. INHERIT THE WIND has as its embryo the historic events which took place in Dayton, Tennessee, during the scorching July of 1925. The Scopes trial, or more popularly called “Monkey Trial , forms the basis of this play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee. Although the conflict of this play appears to pivot around the evolutionary theory versus the Biblical interpretation of the origin of man, the action of the play essentially questions man's ability and right to think. This particular production is the culmination of the experimental Drama 6211 course. Its purpose was to get students involved in theatre. Henry Drummond (Phil Blackwell) presents the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help him .... 119 OLIVER Mary Kroll (Mrs. Sowerberry) and the maid ap prehend Oliver. This years spring musical, under the direction of Mr. Colston, was “Oliver . The plot of the play is based on the novel “Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. It is centered around the adventures of an orphan. Oliver and how he fell in with a den of thieves in London. The musical score of the production is very popular. The score contains such hits as Consider Yourself and “Where is Love . The music was provided by the De La Salle Orchestra under the excellent direction of Brother Chad. Mr. Colston borrowed the idea for a revolving set from Cooper. 120 Gregory Bedor as OLIVER (how dry I am). Frank Kurth plays Fagin. Kay Turgeon and Joe Bedor as Mr. and Mrs. Bunble. The Patroness Society has once again taken an active part in De life. They have been working for the benefit of the school in such things as teachers aides, the health department, and the library. They are the official hostesses at various school functions. Their well known luncheons help funds for school projects. This year they raised funds for the ten Resource Centers. In addition to the luncheons they held an Antique Sale and a fashion show. Thanks Moms. Sitting: Mrs. Kennedy. Mrs. Hughes. Mrs. Cleary, Mrs. Charboneau. Standing: Mrs. Bacha, Bro. Stephen. We specially wish to thank Bill, Ed., and Larry L. for being so kind and giving so much of themselves toward the completion of this book. Without the help and generous kindness of people like these well . . . . De La Salle Booster Club The De Boosters are Dads. They are Dads all right but very special Dads—the DADS of the men of De La Salle High School. These fathers think enough of their sons and De to lend a helping hand whenever they can. The Boosters remain behind the scene and out of the public eye especially that of the boys most of the time. Most of the men of De profit from the checks the Boosters write, be it for meals or tuition or the many extra they pay for during the year. 123 FRIENDSHIP CLUB The De La Salle-Regina Friendship Club was organized for a second year by Tim Totzke and Dave Kemp. It was received joyfully by the girls but not as much from the boy's. Instead of the old traditional letter writing, a new way was devised. This was a dance. The night was April 1 1 and music was provided by The Bre-mens. A real nightful of fun for those who came. The computer goofed this time. Deaner demonstrate’s a new step. Bro.
