Islanders come back to take fourth! This year could have been considered as a rebuilding year for the team. Many teams would have quit and waited for a season if they had lost the likes of Gary Kos, Mike Jakubic. and Tom Scheele. But outstanding seniors such as Joel Andrychowiecz, John Mirocha. Bill Hannan and Jim O'Rourke had no intention of quitting or letting up. they gave 100% at all times. The varsity football team closed out its season with a 20-18 victory over Winona Cotter. Besides Cotter, Benilde, Brady and Cretin also contributed to De La Salle victory line, while the Islanders were handed defeats from Hill, Regis, St. Thomas and Lourdes. Injuries have plagued the squad all year. Mark Gamache, (Co-captain and starting quarterback) injured his leg in the game with St. Thomas and was out for the rest of the year. There was a good crop of juniors on this year's squad. Greg Johnston. Dan Taylor. Doug Cummings. Jim Rodgers, Jim Brown and Rick Lovett all started at various times and gained valuable experience for next year. It gives the boys an extensive amount of exercise and it lets them feel the agony of defeat and the thrill of victory. Coach Camp said. The men that make it through this season will be tough men. It's just too bad that the De La Salle Cross Country team had to be on the losing end of their Central Catholic Conference play with a 1-4 record. GRAPPLERS CRUSH OPPONENTS TO CAPTURE REGIONAL TITLE Determination and hard work help for a winning cause. This year’s wrestling team went to two extremes. In the lower weights they were relatively inexperienced. while in the upper weights they were led by six seniors, who helped the team on to a winning 10-7-1 overall record and a 4-5-1 CCC record and fourth place. Coached by newcomers Dave Hile and Mike Os-monson they got off to a relatively strong start, but fell short in the middle of the season. When Regional Tournaments came around everyone was counting De La Salle out of the tournament, but when the final tally came. De had captured first with 82 points, edging Benilde by one and Hill by three. Contributing towards these points were first place finishes by Dan Lynch. Steve Dyer and Tom Ennen. Placing second were Dennis Pahl, Gino Perrozzi. and Dan Osmonnon. Kevin Jensen and Dave Godlewski added fourth places. All of these qualified for the State Tournament. In the State Tournament De fell short of its expectations, but still managed to take fifth place in a field of sixteen teams. Defending State Champ. Dennis Pahl lost in his final match to place second, while Dan Lynch, captain, placed third with Tom Ennen and Gino Perrozzi finishing fourth. Shannon Kennedy rides out his opponent. With senior Joel Andrychowicz holding the predominantly junior team together, this year’s team turned out to be one which was quite successful. Some bright spots were an opening season beating of Benilde, two close games with Cretin, and a win over State Champ Rochester. A regional over St. Agnes 70-37 at Benilde seemed to be a forewarning of bright things to come for the team in the state tournament. Unfortunately the team dropped two straight games to Rochester and Owatana respectively. To quote coach Dick Rienhart after the season had come to an end. You earned everything you got. Nobody gave you a chance at the start, but throughout the season you made me proud of you. 77 SEASON RECORD DE 58 Winona Cotter 50 DE 60 Minnehaha 50 DE 46 Benilde 43 DE 56 Brady 48 DE 45 St. Thomas 49 DE 48 Rochester 60 DE 51 Alumni 55 DE 58 Hill 36 DE 50 Winona Cotter 47 DE 51 Cretin 49 DE 50 Benilde 56 DE 54 Brady 42 DE 50 Rochester 49 DE 48 St. Thomas 60 DE 58 Hill 40 DE 55 Winsted 49 DE 54 Cretin 53 DE 70 St. Aganes 37 DE 43 Rochester 61 DE 48 Owatonna 60 Coach Reinhart ponders over problems of upcoming game. This year’s baseball team finished with an overall 7-13 record. It's conference record 3-7 was good for fifth place, in what is said to have been one of the toughest conferences in the state. Again this year Mr. Shrake’s stickers were plagued by fielding lapses but most of the time this was made up for at the plate. The leading hitters were Mark Grassman (.407), Al Roers (.354), and Joel Andrychowicz (.300). The pitching department was headed by Bob Bauer. 4 wins and Dave Sobiech. 3 wins. The highlight of the season for the Islanders was defeating Lake Conference power Cooper High School and perennial city conference power Roosevelt. TENNIS TEAM The 1968 DLS Tennis Team swept the CCC with a perfect record of 8-0, the first undefeated conference championship in the history of the school. Co-captains Carr and Kernan finished the season undefeated in conference play the past two seasons. The other doubles team of Lovett and Nawara also fared well as they only lost one conference match last season. Leading the singles was “Pan-cho Palkert who also lost only one conference match during the year. Other single players were Hudoba, Russin, Rofuth, and MacDonald. Fine coaching and great team spirit provided the ingredients for victory through the tennis campaign. With only two seniors as squad members and an undefeated B Squad team moving up. everything looks rosy for Mr. Colston and his racketeers in 1969. 89 RACKETEER’S Above: Pat (Goofy) Kernan perfects his serve during practice. One high point of the season, however, was that Capt. Lovett tied the school's high jump record with a leap of 5'11 Besides Lovett. Brown and Taylor qualified for the state tournament in the shot put and discus events. The only other event that the squad qualified for was the 880 relay team, comprised of Cheehan. Joseph. Lovett and Fuss. Next year could be the year of bringing back prestige to DLS track if enough students would go out for the sport. SENIORS LEAVE ... - 95 AND UNDERCLASSMEN-MUST-FILL-BIG-SHOES THROUGH ACTIVITIES... STUDENT COUNCIL This year has proved to be by far the most successful year for Student Council. Under the direction of the Executive Board, the Student Council introduced many innovations in student activities, among which were a Homecoming, said by many to be the best in years, a highly successful Sno-Daze, General Assembly meetings held during the school day, and highly organized and efficient dances. The Student Council thus succeeded in getting the student body involved in activities to make the Senior year of the Class of '68 the most memorable ever. This was the first musical staged at De in three years. The 63-member cast was headed by seniors Steve Long, Tom Olson, Harold Fleetham. and junior Paul Deaner of De. Linda Smith of Holy Angels, and Clare Carr of Regina. In past musicals at De, the music was provided by six-piece orchestras. Brother Chad assembled a 31-piece orchestra. Work on scenery was prepared by the senior art students under the direction of Brother Giles. CHORUS The chorus this year underwent a series of major changes. An ambitious new director, Brother Chad Junker, and a chorus of new personnel combined to present concepts of musical excellence never before known to De. Their performance at the premiere of The Happiest Millionaire plus their city-wide Christmas appearances gave them the experience necessary to present an outstanding Spring Choral Concert. With the help of Holy Angels' Chorus, An Excursion Through Sound was one of the most successful Spring Concerts ever presented at De. Their year climaxed April 2-5 when they traveled to Chicago to sing at Madona High School. 10-4 Above: Officers Leroy Kurimay, Kevin Kennedy, Steve Long, and Paul Deaner. Also, this year’s society plans to screen eligible juniors in order to be admitted to next year’s society. 109 MONOGRAM CLUB This year's monogram club had ‘‘a lot on the ball. Co-Presidents Pat Ker-nan and Dan Lynch were able to bring the club out of the red and sponsor an awards dinner this year. New faces and ideas made for a student oriented staff. Deadlines met. pictures taken, and ads sold, Delta '68 neared its completion by the First week in June. 118 FRIENDSHIP CLUB The De La Salle Regina Friendship Club was organized in the hope of creating in the student a sense of friendly communication with the opposite sex. Wholesome Relationship among its members was thus advocated, as they matured through experience in the club. Basically, the club was centered on letter writing, where a boy wrote to a girl and she wrote back to him-all done anonymously until they met at the big FC Fair and found who their penpal was. This Fair was a meeting held at the Lake Harriet Rose Gardens. Here, those who showed up, met, ate, flew kites, played football, tennis, beach combing, frisbee, and soccer. ISLANDER During the 1967-68 year, the Islander continued to release issues of the school paper that were noticeably diversified in the field of high school journalism. Basing creative ideas into the Islander, the staff succeeded in releasing the first issue on the first day of school, interviewing DLS alumnus Charlee Brown (from whom Charles M. Schulz derived the name for his comic strip character), printing a specially designed logo in the Sno-Daze issue, releasing the 1 st annual crossword puzzle, and writing lots of inane captions and headlines. Most prominent is the fact that, during this particular volume, the Islander has smashed all previous records for the most consecutive nonstop pages in one school year. Vol. XLV holds 102 Islander pages, as compared with 88 in 1966-67 and 1 961 -62. At the head of the staff was managing editor John Kelly, recipient of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune s Most Valuable Staffer Award. Administrative editor Grant Berg, served as co-editor-in-chief and ran the features pages through the first semester. Don Betzold held the job of putting the front page together as news editor. Dennis Pahl and Joe Budnick layed out the sports pages as co-editors. Kevin Krave pulled the financial strings as business manager. Tom Gromek was presented the Islander” award for his two years of faithfully printing the Islander. Also helping through the year were assistant editors Jim Huss and Tom McKenney and advisor Brother Malcolm Abel. Photos were supplied by the De La Salle Camera Club. CAMERA CLUB 122 Throughout the year at different social and sports events, members of the Camera Club were seen, equipment slung over their shoulders, waiting to capture the excitement of the event in a picture. Supplying the school with pictures and its members with experience the camera club enjoyed a successful year under the leadership of Joe Elfelt. With a variety of pictures, the club was able to supply the ISLANDER with pictures for its publications and also took many of the semi-formal dance portraits. “S.S. GLENCAIRN” The Drama Club, under Mr. Campe presented the Eugene O'Neill play S.S. Glencairn on May 3, 4, and 5. The play relates in four acts, four incidents aboard the tramp steamer S.S. Glencairn. during the era of World War II. In act one. the crew encounters some rum selling girls on a Caribbean island. With this mixture of women and wine, the crew becomes rowdy, a fight starts, and one of the crew is stabbed. The second act centers around an American in the crew who was seriously wounded, and ends as he dies in the arms of his friend Driscoll. Act three opens with Smitty, an Englishman, being accused of being a spy by the rest of the crew. He is eventually cleared, but his will has been broken by the ordeal. Act four Homeward Bound. takes place in a bar while the ship is docked. Olson, the big Swede, has completed his last voyage and is leaving for home. But while his friends are drunk, Olson is shanghaied and sent on another voyage. 125 BOOSTERS Mr. Soukup, Br. John. Mr. Kurth, Mr. Gamache, Mr. Charbonneau, Mr. Kennedy, Mr. Whiteford, Mr. Lovett. HAPPENING HOMECOMING Happening Homecoming was the theme of De’s 1967 Homecoming. The week started with the sale of buttons carrying the message of “Black out the Knights.” All the posters and decorations complimented the psy-chadelic atmosphere of that week. Homecoming Queen Peggy Ruffel was chosen from finalists Deb Link, Mary Grimstad. Karen Johnson, and Vicki Shackle. She was crowned at the De-Benidle football game and reigned over De’s victory 12-0. Grub Day, the demolished car and the Happening Soc Hop.” rounded out the rest of the week, with the Homecoming Dance being the climatic event of the '67 Homecoming. HALLOWEEN HOP The Del Counts provided the music for this new yet successful dance. Prizes were given, at this huge private party, to John Mirocha and his date for having the best costumes. Games were played and an enjoyable time was had by all. 134 mN o ■ ozo) Student participation accented the Sno-Daze activities this year. The decorations were cited as the best yet resulting from the tremendous turnout of interested students and the planning of Grant Berg and Jim Huss in cooperation with Harry Fleetham and Tim Keane. The Broomball Tournament found the Student Council the '68 season champions. Highlighting the week was the Sno-Ball, with The Sir Raleighs providing the music. Being the first formal of the season, the Sno-Ball proved to be a huge success. The dance arrangements were made by Bob Muscala, and dance chairmen Greg Meuers and John Hughes. Button sales were up along with school spirit. Reigning over Sno-Daze was Sno Queen Terri Van Lith. Terri was crowned at the De La Salle vs Lourdes basketball game Friday night. February 26. The other finalists chosen for the Queen Convention were Colleen Brant, Pat Farrell, Pam Olson, Nancy Smith, and Lori Jagger. Thanks to the efforts of spirited De students. Sno-Daze activities provided a well-rounded and successful week. 135 9CI nnva-ONS Student Council winning another game. 139 •lif GRADUATION The climax of the ’68 graduating class came on Sunday May 26 at the Basilica of St. Mary’s. Handing out the diplomas to the graduates was the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Terrance Murphy, president of St. Thomas college. Mr. Warkel read the names and the achievements of each graduating student. At 3:15 that afternoon the seniors had officially ended their four years at De La Salle. COMMENCEMENT DANCE The last week of school for the class of '68 was highlighted by their Commencement dance. This year’s dance was held on May 17 at the Radisson Hotel in Minneapolis. Everyone had a great time dancing to the fabulous Michael’s Mystics and the Southside Syndicate. After the dance everyone left for the all night parties. 143 ROSE DANCE This year's ROSE DANCE was held Friday. April 26 with Dave Brady and the Stars providing the music. The theme of the 1968 Rose Dance was Hawaiian Polynesian. Brother Giles (chairman of the Fine Arts Dept.), and a group of students worked on the decorations. The gym was used for the dance instead of the Commons as in other years because it is much larger and provided a private table for each party of guests. To keep with the tradition of former years and the overall name of the event a red rose was given to each date as the couple arrived. COMPLIMENTS Of MR. THESENVITZ'S HOMEROOM 224.
