tl f 75 01 MHd t VY 3 jty3-? , 6— Sf 0 33 nun DE LA SALLE IS: SYMBOL The waters of baptism are the beginning of source of our life. They are our means of entrance even as the crossing of a moat was the entrance to the fortress of old. Our baptism is our first protection against evil, even as the moat is the first line of protection for the fortress. Our faith and our education are the fortress we are given for security in this life. Our faith protects us from the spiritual death and our education provides security against being jobless, homeless and hungry. De La Salle is education and growth in faith. Because of its location on the island it is not only an institution by a river, but almost literally a moat. All of these are implications of the symbol. A symbol is primarily a means of identification; it is not meant to be a picture or picture story. The picture and picture story are set down in this book as part of one year, the nineteen hundredth and sixty-seventh year of Our Lord, as seen by the persons living here. This is DELTA ’67. DELTA 67 De LaSalle Minneapolis Minnesota.... 2 FOREWORD De La Salle is dedication and dedication is devotion and concern. Concern is the gift of self to the service of others. To serve and protect and accomplish the common good is our goal. You who teach and you who learn, you who give and you who take, you who cheer and you who play, you who act and you who decorate, you who coach and you who pray; living, being yourself, happy, seeing values, growing, all of you make up the dedicated individual. It is to you the men and women of “DE that we dedicate this DELTA '67. 5 6 7 DE LA SALLE '•iy . The first time De has won a homecoming game in nine years, the first time De has beaten Cretin in eleven years, and the first time an Islander has been selected to the All-American ranks since Bob Wetoska made it in 1954. Gary Kos was honored by the New World's Catholic All-American Football Team as a first-string tackle. Further honors were placed on the Islanders when Mike Dalsin, Mike Jakubik, Tom St. Aubin, and Kos were named on the CCC All-Conference Team. Receiving honorable mention were Dean Oberpriller and Jim Hinz. Although many of this year's starters are not returning, Coach Don Joyce is hopeful that the veterans and newcomers can improve on the record of the ’66 team. The captains for next year are Jim O'Rourke, Jim Hinz, and Mark Gamache. Mass of humanity. All together now, one . . . two . . . three . . . 60 Isolated shot of Mike Jakubik moving upfield. DELANEY, EARLY LEAD YOUTHFUL TANKERS Mike Schrauth, Dennis Jones. Greg Ranczka. Under the guiding hands of Coaches Joe Campe and 'Gus Gustafson, the Islander Swimming Team captured a strong second place in the state meet at St. Thomas High School. The squad, captained by Paul Warpeha and Tom Delaney, was composed of a young and inexperienced group of men with a great deal of internal fortitude. Tom Delaney, co-captain and also the Most Outstanding Swimmer had an undefeated season in the 10O yd. butterfly. Jim Early, this year's Most Improved Swimmer , also had a Fine record. He prepared himself for the season by swimming AAU and working on weights during the summer. Next year the captains will be Mike Schrauth and Greg Ranczka. With the loss of only four members - Tom Delaney, Jim Earley, Mike Cotter, and Paul Warpeha-and an excellent crop of returning underclassmen, the Islanders are looking forward to a very good season in 68. They are hopeful that they can make the prediction of their coach Joe Campe come true. Next year we will finish in First place for sure. 61 Big Four: (I. to r.) Paul Warpeha. MCSHANE AND PAHL CAPTURE STATE De’s relatively young and inexperienced wrestling team managed to capture third place in the CCC, while posting a record of 6-6. Coached by Bob Ramsted in his initial season, they were able to earn a respectable record despite its having only two seniors on the squad, co-captains Pat McClellan and Jerry McShane. Off to a slow start, the team gradually adjusted to the new coaching techniques and rallied to a strong finish defeating Benilde 33-14 for the first time in five years. In the state tournament, the grapplers were able to obtain two first places with Jerry McShane capturing the 165 lb. class and Dennis Pahl capturing the 138 lb. class. Heavyweight Pat McClellan and 133 lb. Steve Dyer also placed third and fourth respectively. Next year's outlook is promising in that 10 of the 12 starters are returning, among those are Pahl, Dyer, Tom Ennen, and Dan Lynch. Above: 145 lb. Dan Lynch works for escape. ISLANDERS OUSTED FROM STATE TOURNAMENT Mitch Bauman puts up rebound in season opener against Cretin. With a 53-37 loss to the Cretin Raiders in the Region 1 basketball contest, it marked the first time since the 1960-61 season that Islander cagers were not represented in the state tournament. Although this year’s squad finished their campaign with a mediocre 9-9 record, they were able to provide their loyal followers with some exciting moments. Highlights of the season were a solid drubbing of a fine Mahtomedi ball club in their season opener 75-37, a hard-fought 53-51 victory over the Alumni, and an impressive 67-61 victory over District representative Cokato. As the season progressed, the younger members of the team began to jell until in the latter stages of the campaign, when the lineup was filled with three and even four underclassmen. The season actually ended in the 57-42 loss to Benilde in the Region 4 game. With the team’s hopes resting entirely on the contest, they were literally crushed by the defeat. The only consolation in the game was Steve Holker and Pat Heaney being selected to the All-Regional team. It has been said that from every hardship there comes some good and in the case of this year's cagers, it was the development of the fine sophomore crop. If they continue to come alone as expected, the future of De La Salle basketball is very bright. PUCKSTERS ROAR INTO STATE TOURNAMENT Getting off to a poor start, this year’s hockey team began to unite into a strong squad toward the end of the season. After being soundly beaten by St. Bernard’s, the team caught fire and won its next seven games. The streak was broken in the opening game of the state tournament when the Islanders fell to the no. 1 ranked Duluth Cathedral Toppers. The high point of the season was an 8-1 victory over arch-rival Benilde. As the season progressed, the student body began to give the pucksters the support they deserved and when the state tournament rolled around, trains, cars, and dogsleds were used to transport the fans up to Duluth and give the Islanders one of the biggest rooting sections. The team was led by co-captains Jim Franko and Pat Reak along with seniors Steve Wanvig, John Burke, Tom Grande and junior Pat Kernan. Burke was an All-Conference selection with Franko and Reak as honorable mention players. At a banquet for the hockey team after the season, John Burke was selected the Most Valuable Player, and if the optimism expressed at the banquet can be carried into next year the Islander hockey fans are in for another exciting campaign. GOLFERS FINISH DISMAL SEASON: 7TH IN STATE Our chances don't look good, was golf coach Mr. Bill Johnson's answer to his outlook for the season. Finishing with a record of 3-7, it appeared that he was absolutely correct. Even their 7th place finish in the state was a disappointment. But out of every evil there comes good and the golf team’s case it is an experienced team returning next year. In the top five players there are two sophomores - Jim Ihnot and Ron Galuska. Jim was the number one man and the team's leading scorer. The remaining members of the squad were Jim Franko, John Murlowski, and Mark Patnode. Jim Franko at the peak of his back swing. Mike Dalsin captured a first in the shot put with a toss of 53’ a feet. Gary Kos received 4 points for his second place finish. Mike Jakubik was first in the discus with a throw of 46 ft. 4 in. and Kos placed fourth. So these three scored all of De’s points - 18 - and gave our school a 6th spot in the final standings. Another bright light for De was Dick Schmitz victory in the first heat of the mile run. Although his time was not good enough to match those of the runners in the second heat, his performance was so impressive that many predict him to be the top miler in the state next year. After being issued a death notice because of lack of funds, baseball again returned to De La Salle thanks to money raised by the Booster Club. Although the Islander batmen didn’t post a very impressive record, there were nevertheless flashes of greatness and promise for next year. Standouts on offense were Jim Bandarek and Mike Cotter. Cotter led the team in hits and RBI’s while his batting average was a robust .365 which was second only to Bandarek’s pace setting .384. The mound staff was anchored by senior Mike Ludwig. Posting a fine 2.18 earned run average, Mike’s best performance of the season was a 2-hit shut out of Benilde. The season came to unhappy finish when the Islanders were defeated in the regional playoffs and unable to gain a berth in state tournament. Jim Bandarek moves toward plate. The streak began with Gary Tomzcak in ’63 and ’64 and Len in 65 and '66. Add this to the 4 straight mile championships by Tomzcak and Chuck Ceronsky plus Len's 880 victory in '66 and you see why the Islander distance runners are one of the most respected groups in the state. Most of the credit should be given to the experience which has been handed down from one champion to another and to the CC coach Mr. Jim Rogers. His crash program for enlarging the participants in cross country has enabled De to become one of the powers in the state. So if history repeats itself, the next state CC champ should be Dick Schmitz. 86 NETMEN CAPTURE SECOND IN CCC AND STATE Although this year’s tennis team did not capture the state crown as coach Len Colston had predicted, they did finish second in the tough CCC and second in the state tournament, both instances runner up to the Hill Pioneers. High spots were the doubles team of Pat Kernan and Pat Carr who were undefeated in the conference and second in the state and Paul Warpeha who was the number 3 singles player in the state. Juniors who ran for the Vice-Presidency of the Minnesota Association of Student Councils were given a chance to appear before the students with election speeches. Election speeches for the 1967-68 student council were given at a special assembly to acquaint everyone with the candidates and their ideas. Under the leadership of officers Pat Whalen, Bob Mis-cowiec, John Norris. Kevin Rozman, Greg Bender, Mike Jennings, and Dave Hughes, the Glee Club made the traditional Christmas Concert appearances at schools, parishes, and shopping cen- Moderator ters. The chorus also represented De La Salle BROTHER FIDELIS at the Candlelight Dinner at St. Mary's College in Winona. In December, they sang for Vice President Humphrey. Using the popular Show-Tune medley and incorporating a new group, the Hi-Fi Set, the chorus planned an exciting appearance at Expo '67 in Montreal, Canada. 102 I know it's not much of a song, but I’m not much of a singer . . . The organization, founded by a group of De La Salle dads in 1957 to help the students at De, is composed of the fathers of boys attending De La Salle and others who either had boys at De or are just interested in seeing the school prosper. A secondary reason for its existence is to enable the members to get better acquainted with each other. The association's chief purpose was achieved by paying $21OO in tuition fees for those students whose dads have died. The association’s program further aided De La Salle through the help it gave; purchasing a new PA for the gym, supplying funds for baseball, financing meals for activities, making road trips, purchasing film for De La Salle’s football games, financing the new literary magazine, and buying a new skate sharpener for the hockey team. This patronage, consisting of approximately $4,000, was collected by the smokers (who alone accounted for $2,000), the $5.00 membership fees of the 700-800 members, the Pankake Breakfast, and the ma-pa hops. Meetings were the third Monday of the month. The officers were: Mr. Jack Hplker, President; Mr. Jerry Hardy, 1st Vice President; Mr. Homer Heaney, 2nd Vice President; Mr. Tom Lovett, Recording Secretary; Mr. Jean Charboneau, Financial Secretary; Mr. Adrian Gamache, Treasurer; and, in his final year, Brother Edward, Moderator. 104 PATRONESS SOCIETY Service to the school has been the goal of this year’s Patroness Society, under the leadership of Mrs. Donald Manning, president; Mrs. E. Godlewski, vice-president; Mrs. Clarence Hruska, recording secretary; Mrs. Jack Kovar, treasurer; Mrs. Ted Wratkowski, membership secretary; and the direction of Brother I. Vincent, moderator. Volunteer mothers have spent hundreds of hours staffing the nurse's office, helping in the library and academic office and giving aid to other special projects. In addition to the afternoon luncheon meetings, the Patroness Society held two successful evening education meetings for parents. Mothers display spring fashions at one of their meetings. 105 CONTEMPORARY MAN FILM SEMINAR The goal of the Contemporary Man Film Seminar was to give the participants a better understanding of reality by approaching it through the film media. Along these lines, films covering a wide range of real life situations were chosen. Outstanding among these were HUD, starring Paul Newman and telling of a young man's revolt against the strong principles of his father, and Fellini’s LA STRADA, the story of man’s loneliness and search for a way of life. The other films shown throughout the year included THE BI- CYCLE THIEF, an Italian movie. THE HUSTLER, starring Jackie Gleason and Paul Newman, and RAISON IN THE SUN. starring Sidney Poitier. Area high school students, among them sixty De La Salle juniors and seniors, met monthly to view and discuss one of these films. Tom Bjerke, co-chairman along with Jon Falkowski, felt “the entire program succeeded in developing within the participants a sensitivity to the film as an art form. 106 CONTACT In its 16th year, De La Salle Contact has achieved a higher degree of social and religious attitude. The forty members use their ability to lead and willingness to become actively involved in Catholic action. Brother Raimond, Contact moderator, commented that the group's theme is a great opportunity to give practical meaning to the Catholic faith by being committed to Christian works . The group's 1966-67 activities included: tutoring children in reading skills; running a Christmas party for underprivileged children; delivering Christmas baskets to needy families; working in hospitals and the St. Joseph Hospital for the Aged. Last summer, various members participated in ON-Corps Projects at the Catholic Youth Center. To be eligible for Contact, a student needs only to make a weekend seminar at the Catholic Youth Center. 107 ISLANDER IMPROVES WITH NEW CHANGES Junior editors Don Betzold, John Kelly, Grant Berg The 1966-67 school year was a milestone for the “Islander '. In its 44th year, the Islander ' introduced many new features. Under the direction of a new advisor, Mr. John J. Hampe, and Editor-in-chief Bob Kearney the school paper revised its format by changing the size and frequency of the editions. The standard size of school papers, 1 1 ” x 17 , was cut in half to BVa” x 11 . To compensate for the smaller size the Islander was released twice as often. This resulted in more up-to-date coverage of events and areas of interest. January 1967 saw still another innovation in school papers. For the first time, the Islander was printed on the De La Salle press. Tom Gromek’s work with the printing press saved approximately $25 an issue. The editorial board was comprised of seven members. Heading this was Bob Kearney, President of the Minnesota High School Press Association, elected at the Februai 1966 Minneapolis Star-Tribune Journalism Clinic. In his second year as news editor, senior Jim Elfelt managed to win awards at the St. Thomas College Journalism Workshop. He took first place in News Writing with Roman Augustoviz's article on a $90 tuition raise and third place with Rich Carlson's story on Student Council forfeiture of $1192.12. Sports was handled by Pat Heaney and Mike Foley; Foley taking over Pat’s duties when basketball took him from the Islander . Assuming the newly created position of Administrative Editor was John Kelly. Grant Berg handled the Features department, while Don Betzold managed the Editorial Page. Pat Heaney commented, We've accomplished quite a bit, but many members weren’t satisfied because the sweaters didn’t arrive until late in the year. Monogram Club President PAT HEANEY in MATH CLUB In its third year, Brother Arthur’s Math Club has proven itself useful to De La Salle. The school was measured for the Nicollet Island Project as the club's first assignment. During homecoming, the club entered a float in the parade and took third place. Representing a computer, the float’s theme was ‘‘De-Compute Pacelli. The development of the Math Resource Center in Room 204 was the club's major project. Books ranging from freshman algebra to college calculus were made available to all students and teachers wishing to find information on a math subject. The officers of this year’s Math Club were President Bill Seivert, Secretary Lyle Dockendorf, and Treasurer Pat Krenn. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB Moderator BROTHER FINBAR Stripsky prepares to enlarge a print. Stripsky and J. Helin discuss techniques for better pictures. The Photography Club can be described as a group of amateurs called upon to do professional work. They have had extreme difficulty in getting started this year, not only because of a lack of adequate funds but also because not one member has had more than one year’s experience. With no one to teach them the proper techniques of picture-taking, the members began to teach themselves, using the help of books, the knowledge of Brother Finbar, and specialized classes. The classes were centered around the idea of genuine interest in photography as an art. In supplying pictures for the Islander” the club has tried to reach beyond the mere mechanics of taking a picture. However, the results of these classes cannot be judged until next year. But next year with an adequate budget, returning members, and a realistic outlook, the Photo Club will come closer to doing professional work. 113 ART DEPT. BRINGS CULTURE 1)4 The Art Department has worked to raise the cultural level of the school by cooperating with other departments. The Drama Club, Glee Club, Delta, and the Literary Magazine have all received assistance from the Art Department. Decorating the school, producing program posters, tickets, banners, displays, and play-sets have been accomplished by this department. About twenty outstanding students from Brother Giles' three art classes have worked over and above classroom assignments to meet the school’s demands. “The department has offered the school a more delightful place and has made the students more appreciative to the arts, commented Brother Giles. STUDENTS CITED FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO SCHOOL At an assembly on May 10, students who excelled in their respective fields were singled out for their contributions. The keynote speaker was Brother Jude Michael of Cretin High School. He spoke of student involvement and cited these De students as “Impact Students. The awards other than for sports were as follows. Brother Peter, formerly principal at Xavier High School, kept the band in beat. The conductor of Xavier band. Mame was sung by the De La Salle and Holy Angels Choruses at the annual Spring Concert, May 21. Brother Fidelis directed the concert which was a preliminary to De La Salle Chorus performance at Expo 67 this summer. 123 DE GETS LITERARY MAGAZINE “Perspective , De La Salle’s first literary magazine, introduced into the school last September, is a renovation in the school’s literary field. Brother Paschal, moderator, said, The new magazine was started on the initiative of the students, not the faculty, with the assistance of the Islander editors. The new magazine is an outlet for those students who possess creative writing skills. Funds for the magazine will be supplied by the Administration, the Booster Club, and sales; the magazine will go on sale for the minimal price of twenty-five cents. The school’s own press will run off copies of the magazine, presumably twice a year, around Christmas and Easter time. Creative contributions for the first issue (works) include; an article written by Miss Tiejen, head of the religious department, on high school religion teaching, about ten poems, two short stories, a book review, a movie review, descriptive sketches, narrative sketches and art works. The writing editors are Bill O’Brien. Grant Berg with assistants Greg Soukup and Mike Kwa-tera. Raymond Herdegen assisted by Ed Skubic, is the art editor under the direction of Brother Giles. The bulk of the magazine’s writing material came from Brother Paschal’s creative writing class-ten to twelve students have contributed their masterpieces. The staff is small but progressive and if the magazine is a success this year, says Brother Paschal, it will be published next year. Editor BILL O BRIEN Bill O'Brien, Bro. Paschal, Grant Berg. Greg Soukup, Mike Kwatera STUDENT COUNCIL 1 st Vice President Bob Kearney addressing the General Assembly The 1967 Student Council successfully campaigned for and won the vice-presidency of the Minnesota Association of Student Councils. Innovations introduced were the handling of the audiovisual department and guided tours of the school for 8th grade boys considering attending De. However, the 1966-67 school year was a failure for the Student Council in many aspects. Because of a lack of organization, the Executive Board had $192.12 confiscated from the treasury. Meetings were scheduled in a hit-and-miss fashion, often without promptly published minutes. Many meetings were called off because of a lack of quorum. Few delegates bothered to push council projects. Officers of the Executive Board were: President Michael O'Rourke, 1 st Vice-President Bob Kearney, 2nd Vice-President John Harvey, Treasurer Pat Whalen. Secretary Jeff LaCount, Commissioner Coordinator Michael O'Rourke, Commissioner of Athletics Mike Hamerski, Commissioner of Student Academics John Kelly, Commissioner of Academic Affairs Bill O’Brien, and Commissioner of Publications Brad Wallin. l suppose you're all wondering why I’ve called you here today THE HOME STRETCH The home stretch of the class of 1967 was highlighted by the Senior Commencement Dance and Graduation itself. Held at the Holiday Central on May 19, the Commencement Dance ended the long school year, and all had a great time dancing to the Marvelous Marauders. After the dance, couples filed into an adjoining room where dinner was served. Even though the crowd was larger than anticipated everyone was seated to enjoy the entertainment of a fine Sextet from McGuire's. 126 - Right: Brother Fidelis solemnly leads the Class of ’67 for the last time. The climax came on May 28 at 2:00 P. M. at the Basilica of St. Mary's when 347 DE men marched forward to receive their diplomas. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. P. W. Coates Pastor of Ascension Parish gave the address and handed out the diplomas. Brother Fidelis read the names of the graduates and some of the achievements each student accomplished. By 4:00 P.M. four years at De La Salle was officially over. Brother Fidelis gives last roll call. This year students used IBM Votomatic voting machines. De La Salle was the first school to use computerized voting machines in a high school election. P. O’Keefe watches as student votes. NEW STUDENT COUNCIL THE NEW OFFICERS are.
