Soc Mi±2____________ Nr 3 73«97 a 1965 ' fD33 THI BOOK 15 A GIFT to MINNEAPOLIS PUBLIC LIBRARY From PUBLISHER 5 £0T 1NIV I n il- ■ 0 OoancP DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL DELTA MINNEAPOLIS MINNESOTA I Experienced, dedicated, concerned . . • these are words often used to describe Mr. Casanova. No teacher has served De La Salle longer than he. For fifteen years, as a guidance counsellor, religion and English teacher, and Moderator of the National Honor Society, he has contributed much to the intellectual and spiritual growth of De Students. The seniors and olumni ore especially grateful to Mr. Casanova because it is he who personally counsels each student before he graduates. This is very impor- tant to the senior who must decide what vocation and occupation to pursue after high school. Mr. Casanova has proven that he is eminently qualified to do this by virtue of his knowledge of guidance and vocational problems. So, with a deep sense of humility and grotefullness we dedicate the 1965 Delta to Mr. Robert Casanova. We sincerely hope that he will teach for fifteen more years at De La Salle. i SYMBOL OF DE LA SALLE The waters of baptism are the beginning and source of our life. They are our means of entrance even as the crossing of a moat was the entrance to the fortress of old. Our baptism is our first protection against sin, even as the moat is the first line of protection for the fortress. Our faith and our education are the fortress we are given for security in this life. Our faith protects us from the spiritual death and our education provides security against being jobless, homelss, or hungry. Education and growth in faith are the tasks of the Christian school. This is certainly true of De La Salle. Moreover, because of its location on the island, this is not only an institution by a river, but has almost literally a moat. All of these are implications of the symbol. However it should be kept in mind that a symbol is primarily a means of indentification; it is not meant to be a picture or picture story. That is why we say that it implies the meanings listed above. It is not a picture of those things but it recalls them to mind for the person who is familiar with one or more of them. 4 FACULTY SENIORS P.12 JUNIORS p. 59 P. 77 SOPHOMORES SOCIAL p i7i p. i48 SPORTS DEDICATION p.2 5 LOCAL COUNCIL FATHERS HIS HOLINESS POPE PAUL VI MOST REVEREND LEO BINZ, D.D., S.T.D. The Dramatics Club is a unique activity because it utilizes many diverse talents in producing a play. Regardless of a student's abilities, the only condition for membership is that one be willing to sacrifice his time and energy. There is sure to be some kind of job suited for him, whether it be costume work, lighting, acting, selling tickets, making signs or whatever he chooses. The enjoyment, satisfaction and sense of accomplishment, as club president John Brady would fell you, make the time and effort well worth it. Halfway to Heaven , a three act morality play, and The Boyfriend , a musical satire on the Roaring 20's, were the two productions staged this year under the direction of Brother L William. 116 THE DELASALLE CHORUS The DLS Chorus reached new heights in what many claim was its greatest year yet. Having lost thirty-five members through graduation, veteran director Brother Fideiis issued a call for members and was immediately overwhelmed by the response of over a hundred singers. More seniors auditioned than ever before and they helped elect Tom Hudoba to lead the group through a schedule packed with concerts and appearances. Go Eddie go A trip to the World's Fair in New York became the goal for each member after the club received an invitation to perform on Minnesota Day, June 22nd. Proceeds from their Christmas holiday oppearances, the Winter and Spring Concerts and the school musical were collected to defray travel expenses. Some highlights and sidelights to the 1965 season were the release of Free From Evil , by Brother Fideiis, the solos by senior Don Fitzgerald and junior Eddie Robbins, and the performances of the De Lites and De Men. Producing posters for such events as Snow Daze and Wrestling matches was the task of this extension of the Commission of Publications. Besides this advertising the Art Club presented art shows for the student body throughout the year. Using the abstract ideas of its moderator. Brother Roderick, the organization strived to form an appreciation within the students for modern art. The officers for this year were Mike Atkinson, Greg De Ziel, and Mike Kim-itch. 123 N. F. L. Coached by Brother Michael William, the senior team of Larry Millet, Dave Kudak, Bill Lindahl, and Dave Kostick placed third among thirty-six schools from five states in the Worthington, Minn, tournament. An alternate squad captured first ploce at the Saint Cloud State College Speech Conference and second place at the Stillwater meet. The B team came away with a first place trophy in the DeLaSalle round robin and third place honors from Hopkins. As a result of the entire team's efforts, four trophies were won this year. Mony of the debaters also participated in speech. The speech team had high hopes of doing well in the American Legion Oratorical Contest since Dan McElroy finished close to the top lost year. The divisions of speech are original orator , non-original oratory, dramatic, humorous, and extemporaneous. Debater in action. CAMERA CLUB Rick Lawrence finishing picture in dork room. The members provide pictures for the Islander and Delta while they gain valuable experience in handling the delicate equipment. Their activity is centered around the darkroom, near the guidance office, where many hours are spent in developing snapshots. The club was managed almost entirely by its own members this year, except for occasional advice and assistance provided by Brother Roderick. Richard Lawrence, Tom Louzon, and George Rouse formed the nucleus for this fine group of shutterbug enthusiasts. 127 SENIOR RETREATS Every student that goes through De La Salle has the opportunity to make at lease one closed retreat. For two days in his senior year, he makes the journey to Dunrovin retreat house, near Stillwater on the St. Croix River. The quiet, modern facilities provide the ideal atmosphere for prayer, spiritual reading and personal reflection. A priest is always available for private conferences, group discussions, or celebration of the Holy Mass. The Class of 1965 was especially fortunate in that they were able to participate fully in the Mass due to the recent ecumenical changes. 128 VOCATION CLUB An unknown organization to the underclassmen, the Benildus Club is one of great importance to the Seniors. Realizing that choosing and fulfilling their vocation in life is very important, the members say one decade of the rosary every Wednesday before lunch in the Chapel. Contrary to the popular opinion this activity does not pray only for vocations in the Priesthood or Brotherhood but to fulfill their goal in life whatever it may be. Benildus Club ot prayer. Operating in three groups the organization works with the Catholic Youth Center in developing understanding among the youth of today. The groups also are engaged in several projects, such as the Christmas Basket Drive, during the year. The juniors, under Brother Richard, have broken up into smaller groups of four or five. These small groups have really put Catholic Action into practice. They hove worked in hospitals and visited the sick and aged, besides holding discussions periodically throughout the year. The purpose of these smoll groups is to develop in each member the ability to think, judge and act under any circumstances. Through Contact the participants become more individual and thus better prepared to become good Catholic leaders. SENIORS STANDING (I to R): F. Berg, T. Gobrik, D. Ko ik, F. Wrro . J. Brady, J. Work was initiated in the '63-'64 school year by Mr. Colston, Brother Charles, and the Junior class officers. It was continued this year and by the second semester was operating smoothly. The Council consists of two bodies: the Executive Board and the General Assembly. Six senior class officers and four junior class officers comprise the Executive Board. The General Assembly includes the Senior Senate, the Executive Board, and two delegates from every advisory in the school. If meets monthly to plan future activities and carry out its other business. Moderator Brother Fidelis is the guiding and driving force behind the Council and acts as a liaison between the Council and the faculty. When asked why the Council was formed. Secretary Larry Dalsin replied that the principle reason was to unite the student body. With this goal in mind, the Council hopes to work closely with the faculty and make their tasks easier whenever possible. 133 Lorry Dolsin TREASURER Patrick Schneider COMMITTEE CO-ORDINATOR Denis Grande COMMISSIONER OF ATHLETICS Michael Riney COMMISSIONER OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS Michael Welsh COMMISSIONER OF PUBLICATIONS Robert Kettering COMMISSIONER OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES Michael Wolff COMMISSIONER AT LARGE James Vogt 135 MONOGRAM CLUB Perhaps the most exclusive organization in the school is the Monogram Club. One is the selling of De stocking caps for protection against winter winds and low flying ICBM's. Another is the selling of refreshments at athletic events and dances. Symbolizing membership in the society are the gold letter sweaters proudly worn by the members every Friday. Consisting of only the fop students in the school, each member must write a theme on personal ability, besides being in the top per cent of the class and approved by the faculty. The main duties of the members are tutoring freshmen and running the paperback book store in the new building. 139 MATH CLUB An idle organization for many years, the Math Club has been successfully revived by Brother Arthur. With membership of about twenty-five this activity made many geometric figures including polyhedrons ahd tetrahedrons. 140 ISLANDER A school newspaper should be the voice of the school. This year's Islander is truly the voice of De La Salle. Under the direction of Brother Jerome and editor-in-chief Joe Kroll, the paper has consistently striven to publish issues of interest to the entire student body. Dan Thiegs supervises front page production, while Dave Doi and Mike Farrell manage the sports section. Gene Fournier and Jim Vogt plan the editorial and features page. Working with a newly devised offset printing method, the staff has improved the writing, the page make-up and the overall attractiveness of the paper. Special emphasis has been placed on the quality and quontity of pictures along with additional student and faculty opinion. 141 STAFF M. Eckman, S. Potyondy. SEATED: J. Vogt, L Zeman, D. Thiegs, J. BASKETBALL The 1964-65 basketball team, faced with the task of rebuilding, finished the regular season with a 12-6 record. Encountered with the usual difficulties of rebuilding, the Islander cagers had their ups and downs. Dick Reinhart, in his twentieth year of coaching at De, had only three returning lettermen as a nucleus. The Islanders lost their first two contests at the hands of Austin Pacelli and St. Cloud. Even defeated it was apparent that De possessed a high-scoring combination on Riney and Ihnot. With the addition of experience, the Islanders strung seven victories in a row. The most impressive victory was a 50-45 win over previously undefeated Benilde. The second half of the season could muster only a mediocre 6-4 record. They suffered defeats to Hill, Benilde, and Austin. The loss to Hill left the Islanders in second place for the first time since 1959. The regular season was highlighted when the Islanders reached their potential and defeated number one ranked Benilde in the Region IV playoff, 63-59. Individually, Mike Riney, Tom Ihnot, and Mark Reiger all averaged in double figures. Mike, the leading scorer in the C.C.C., was named to the All-Conference team while Ihnot received honorable mention. All-Regional trophies were given to Riney, Ihnot and Leonard. 166 1 De-Rat Let's roce Riney shows the form which made him the all-conference scoring leader. SOCIAL 171 HOMECOMING Except for the donee and assembly, the 1964 Homecoming was one of the gloomiest in the history of De La Salle. The good part of the events began with the assembly held on the preceding Friday. Many consider it the best assembly yet, for then the queen candidates were introduced to the students, who were allowed to vote for their favorite. At the dance the new queen, Jane Tester, and her court presided over the festivities. Also at this time Pot Ennen presented Mr. Casanova with an award for his 15 years service to De. However, the entire spirit of the occasion was ruined with the game on Sunday. The rain, cold weather, and the 8-0 loss to Hill made Don Joyce's first Homecoming unforgettable. 172 A large crowd welcomes Princess Mini Finsen escorted by Joe Kroll- wowmiiiini A DeKo Solle dream cor. 175 SOCK HOPS A means of raising money and of finding enjoyment are the De sockhops. Throughout the year De La Salle had many local groups play for the enjoyment of the student body. Jonas and The Whalers, the Avanties and the Henchmen were among the bands that played at De. The money which was raised went toward the new Student Council, the Swimming Team and the Senior Class fund. Although the bands were not the greatest, all who came found enjoyment. 176 little Latin Lupe lu Go Tommy Go Students enjoy Thanksgiving dance!!!? 177 MARDI GRAS The De La Salle Mardi Gras Drive of 1965 broke all previous records and exceeded every expectation. A schoolwide goal of $40,000 and a twenty-five dollar per man average was surpassed by substantial margins. Brother Jerome, who was in charge of the drive, said, The results of the Drive are most gratifying and certainly reflect the enthusiasm and spirit of the whole student body. We wish to thank all who helped to make the Drive the success that it was. The music of the Exclusives was enjoyed by the students at the Friday night dance. The Saturday night Card Party for parents and friends, though not well attended, was also a success. Big Decision: Which prizo should I work for? 178 GIRLS, GIRLS, GIRLS This year we decided to dedicate a special section of the DELTA to all those brave girls who came down to De to make our sockhops, activities, and lives a little more enjoyable. Throughout this section you will view some of these girls who attended these activities and made them the success that they were. 179 GIRLS 180 GIRLS 18] Ain't she sweet SNOW DAYS Directed by the Student Council, the 1965 Sno Doze was a great success. During this week several larger than usual crowds attended the events. A School Spirit contest sponsored by the Council added incentive to the students. Brother Michael Bryan's 303 won the contest while 102 and 301 followed closely. Also included in the festivities were a sports assembly, a broomball tournament, won by Junior 226, the Winter Concert by the Chorus, and the dance, the Sno Ball. Bui I hod o girl when I came in . TAKES THIRD PLACE IHNOT RINEY HONORED Underdogs all season, the 1965 De La Salle Basketball team accomplished what they set out to do at the start of the season — prevent Benilde from capturing the Traveling Trophy in the State Tournament. Though they lost the following game on Saturday, they did beat St. Cloud on Sunday to capture third place. Playing almost a flawless game against Benilde, the Islanders were again able to beat the Red Knights with better rebounding. Mark Reiger, led the team in scoring with eighteen points and in rebounds with fourteen, besides holding Benilde's Poison to five points. Mike Riney scored sixteen points, ten in the second quarter. Sheer determination by the entire team and especially Pete Froelich made this 58-48 victory possible. Shooting only 23%, the team lost to Winona Cotter 43-32 in the semi-finals. Mike Riney led the Islanders with 15 points, almost half of the team's total. On Sunday Tom Ihnot's 30 points led the Islanders to a 61-39 victory over St. Cloud Cathedral, capturing third pfbce. Tom Ihnot ond Mike Riney were named to the All Tournament Team from De La Salle. THE BOY FRIEND This yeor the Fine Arts Deportment presented The Boy Friend, a musical comedy of three octs. Tom Hudoba, Mike Rains and Jule Theiler held the mole leads while Marsha Poeschl and Sandy Lombard took the female leads. The cast consisted of girls from all four Catholic High Schools. Brother William and Brother Fidalis worked together to make this one of De's best Musicals. Sandy Lombard arranged all the dancing. Besides the mony activities available to students, De Lo Salle also has two parents' organizations. The Patroness Society is a club for those mothers who wish to actively assist the school, both financially and by working in the library, in the kitchen, etc. The Boosters Club is a group of fathers interested in helping the school by providing funds for extracurricular activities. A tuition fund established by the Club makes full tuition scholarships available to students whose fathers die before their graduation. PATRONESS L to R - Mrs. E. DE LA SALLE ALUMNI The Alumni Association does much and expects very little in return. It is unfortunate that only a few De men know of the help they are giving to needy students through their Scholarship Fund Drive. Much time and energy is expended by our loyal and generous Alumni in picking recipients. The primary source of funds for the financial aid is contributions made by its members. Both the Alumni and the students were saddened by the unexpected loss of Ted Raciborski on January 18. He was post president of the Association and leader in promoting support of the Scholarship Fund. We all owe a debt to his memory for a job well done. OFFICERS SEATEO L to R—W Kenney. President. First, we would like to thank the following for their wonderful photography: Scherling-Pletsch Studios for their help with the Senior pictures, next to National School Studios for their brilliant pictures of our underclassmen, and our own camera club for enhancing our coverage of everyday school life. We would also like to thonk Sacred Heart Design for their help on our symbol, to Mr. Hedstrom for his many trips down to De through Minnesota snow storms, to the Nationol Yearbook Company for their 3R forms and speedy return of proofs, and lastly, to Brother Roderick without whose help we might never have gotten this book out.
