Each of us knows that without the help and guidance of our parents our lives during these four short years at De could not have been spent so profitably. We sincerely hope that their love and concern for our well-being will inspire us to success in the future as it has in the past. To Brother Fidelis goes the gratitude of each senior. He has counseled us and taught us since we were freshmen, influencing us not only as individuals, but as a class. When we remember De La Salle, we will remember him as a man we knew and respected—truly a boy's brother. It is true that we often find it difficult to say thank you to those who deserve our thanks. We hope that this publication will in some way express our gratitude for us. HIS HOLINESS POPE PAUL VI 6 LiL MOST REVEREND LEO BINZ, D.D., S.T.D. On November 20, 1963, on ideal man died. Truly, George Stasik was a man in every sense of the word—in his humility, in his fortitude, ond in his saintliness. Stricken with cancer, he faced each day bravely, without complaining,- rather, he brought joy and encouragement to his students and associates on the faculty at De La Salle. We mourn his death and hope that each of us can be os great a credit to ourselves and to God as he was. 99 ATHLETICS 102 FOOTBALL The 1963 varsity football team, consisting of what has been called the best material available for several years, was able to produce only a mediocre 3—2—3 season record. Finishing third in CCC play at 1—1—2, the team never really got off the ground because of injuries and inconsistent ploy. There were, nonetheless, highlights during the season. Individuals, such os Bill Curron, best offensive lineman, Tom Finnegan, best offensive back, Ed Komoroski, best defensive lineman, and Chet Durda, best defensive back were weekly standouts. In addition, the defense was generally tough, thus chalking up four shutout performances. Probably the outstanding characteristic of this year's team, as opposed to teams of the post, was the great number of seniors participating. It was not unusual for twenty-five seniors to dress for a game. Furthermore, the spirit of those men was tremendous, thus determining a good attitude for the entire squad. 103 FIRST ROW: B. The season was marked with early losses to Benilde and Hill, and then a string of victories over South, Cretin and Nazareth Hall. The high point of the season was the State Tournament where the horriers found their way to a share in the stote chompionship for the first time. His consistent high scoring and his breaking of a state record made Gary Tomczak the team's number one man. Cooch Utecht expressed his regret that the season was not longer and also said that he was satisfied with the season's results. 107 FIRST ROW: M. Hlrdler, J. DeVrios, 0. Seattorek, D Tetnowski. Mr. Mitchell, a native of northern Minnesota, taught the team a rough brand of play, exemplified in the hard body-checking of defensemen Bill Hinz and Jim Recucki. Despite the disappointing season, Ed Dalsin and Dave Mortenson stood out in the league. Dalsin, the best goalie in the CCC, starred in the nets throughout the season. Mortenson was one of the best scorers in the league. Other high scorers were Schirmers, Humphrey, Dorff, and the Ruane brothers. Locke stop on opponent's pass. VARS IXV; FIRST ROW: B. Hin , P. Ruane. From a relatively large group Brother formed a working unit of a dozen men. Although the team did not compete, it provided entertainment at the assemblies and basketball games. Self-motivation was an important factor, according to Brother, in keeping the team together. Since little recognition was given to the group, it can be seen that individual improvement was the team's goal. To show its achievement, the group is preparing for future competition. The team was composed of ten seniors, five juniors, and one sophomore. The lone sophomore, sharpshooter Tom Ihnof, was a surprise early season starter. Led by Tim Holker and Mike Rengel the Islander's started fost and kept up this pace all season. Througnout the season tnere was continued balanced scoring, with Rengel, Holker and junior guard Mike Riney usually in double figures. Early in the year De defeated Winona Cotter, a possible state tournament entry, 51—50. This victory prepared the team for the tough CCC conference. Because of the great amount of talent on this year's team, the starting lineup was constantly being juggled. Mr. Reinhart, however, usually seemed to come up with the winning combination. Having been organized into its present form three years ago, it has grown steadily. The seniors and Mr. Bierdan, their moderator, put on emphasis on personal communication with others. This group has held panels or discussion groups with other schools, and has visited and talked with Negro families, bringing about a mutual understanding among teenagers. The juniors, under Mr. Colston, are engaged in several projects outside of school for the benefit of others, such as helping under privileged children. The frosh-soph group under Brother Roimond, is an innovation at De. These three divisions of one group are greatly aiding the advancement of cooperation and guidance between the teen-agers and those concerned with their well-being. SENIORS FIRST ROW, L to R-P. Replacing tradition with new and fresh ideas, they revamped their whole junior organization, deciding to promote a definite increase in tangible advancements. Not satisfied with a singular purpose, many juniors set out to make their class prominent in school affairs. A marked increase in mission collection returns, along with a proportionate increase in participation at extro-curriculars followed. The advancements shown by the Junior Class point to a successful Senior year for them come next fall. JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS: President I. Daliln (SEATED), STANDING L lo R—Secretary R. Brother Finbar, moderator, has shown his group the fine points of photography—ranging from the click of the shutter to the darkroom developing. Composed mainly of hobbyists, the camera club saves the school much of the cost of professional photography, while giving the members the experience and enjoyment they seek in the realm of photography. 136 ART CLUB Led by Brother Roderick, the art club has carried on what has become a tradition of good artwork ot De La Salle. Without much recognition or fanfare, the members worked for their own perfection in the fields of drawing, painting, and the like. Usually, the art club members compete to design the Delta cover. Highlighting the year were such features as fashion show , concerts and art sales, besides the usual business. Through this mixture of business and pleasure the monthly meetings were both profitable and enjoyable. Nearly every activity has felt the help of the Booster Club. Their motto, I'm a Booster for De La Salle, seen on car bumpers all over town, signifies the spirit of the group, according to moderator Bro. J. Edward. President Cy Rengel and his fellow members were pleased with what he termed a successful year. Brother Ambrose's Alumni Club, under president Hans Reiss, Class of 1950, had a good year. The remaining seniors were ably supported by a talented group of underclassmen. Some of the chorus' more significant performances included a concert at Benilde, a television appearance on December 23, and the traditional Spring Concert. The chorus also appeared at numerous shopping centers and high schools throughout the greater metropolitan area. Unlike the other activities at De la Salle, the chorus is a year round activity. The members of the chorus and their director deserve much recognition and praise for the long hours of practice they have put in. An important feature of this year's club was a series of thirty-six workshops conducted by Brother Paul and the veterans of the club, offering instruction in acting, lighting, costumes, and construction. Attendance at all workshops was one of the club's requirements for a letter. This year more than ever, the officers took a large responsibility in leading the club. Brother Mark and Monsignor Baskfield handed out diplomas to the graduates led by Valedictorian Dick Anderson and Salutatorian Tom Wishy. A sermon was given by Father Lawrence Sledz and was followed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Members of the Junior Council served as ushers. You mean he oskod you first? Who threw the cherry bomb in the punch bowl? I 162 I SPRING IS MUSIC Sounds of the Sixties was the theme for this year's highly successful Spring Concert. Assisted by the Holy Angels Glee Club and under the direction of Brother Fidelis, the De La Salle Chorus climaxed its fine season with selections from past stage performances plus some new arrangements. They sang before a nearly full house of parents and students. A combination Hootenanny and Sock Hop was put on by the Senior Class for the first time at De La Salle. Cyril Paul and eight other local groups sang their folk songs and played at the sock hop. SPRING IS ART A welcomed addition to spring events was the Art Show. Featuring a variety of pictures and sculptures, the exhibit was placed in the lobby of the new building for the students and teachers to view. First place winners were Jule Theiler, Marty Theissen, Mike Ramolae and Steve Wanvig. Brother Roderick, Art Club moderator, was highly pleased with the students work and hopes to have two or three such shows next year due to plans for a new art course here at De. Special thanks goes to the patroness Society and the Boosters for their encouraging support. 166 I Moment of anticipation. Please Don't Eat The Roses. ROSE DANCE The annual Rose Dance, sponsored by the Junior Class, was held again this year with the Jim Rhodes Band providing the entertainment. By the choice of the majority of students, the traditional formal attire was abandoned in favor of semi-formal wear in order to encourage more upperclassmen to attend. 167 MY FAIR LADY The Fine Arts Department, under the direction of Brothers Paul and Fidelis, again produced an outstanding musical, My Fair lady. De la Salle was the first amateur group to put on this Broadway smash hit which was adapted from George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion. All seating records were broken for the stand of five performances. Drawing special praise were the realistic settings and the dance scenes. Brother Paul, directing his last play at De la Salle, showed why De has gained a reputation for consistently good plays.
