Unfortunately, the position of advisor, which requires so much extra time, effort, and devotion, is even more often passed over as something superfluous. It is the determination of this graduating class that their advisors, especially their Senior advisors, shall not be forgotten. MR. JOHNSON This renowned Problems of Democracy instructor, usually the victim of many fond epithets and other descriptive adjectives, states in all sincerity that he has heard none of these nicknames this year. He is the perennial coach of the “B” basketball squad and the golf team, but his real ambition is “to rc-unitc the old ‘Ali-Baba and Swedish Angel' professional wrestling team.’ Mr. Johnson, a member of St. Joan of Arc Parish, numbers “planning the 1960 “bum shoot’” among his fondest memories at De La Salle. When not engaged in academic or extracurricular functions, he relaxes by playing golf and “shooting.” BROTHER J. EDWARD Brother Edward is one very busy man. He is athletic director, football and basketball moderator, and moderator of the Boosters’ Club. In fact. Brother says, “You name it and I’ve got something to do with it!” He is looking forward to the day when “peace and quiet reign in the locker room.” Nevertheless, Brother is presently content with the “cheerful, smiling faces” that greet him in the typing room. His spare moments are spent in either the locker room or the gymnasium. BROTHER H. FRANCIS Brother Fancis, moderator of the Senior Class and head of the Chemistry Department, is affectionately known as “Brother Wizard” or “the chief.” Concerning his ambition, Brother says he wants to be an excellent Brother, and excellent teacher, anti thus serve and honor God and save my soul.” This popular Senior religion and chemistry instnictor is particularly fond of “the wonderful scenery on and around the Island.” In time not spent in teaching or in shining his ripple-soled shoes, Brother enjoys reading and studying, golfing, and “molecular model building.” 7 BROTHER DANIEL This excellent mathematics instructor and chairman of the mathematics department does not deny the fact that he has nicknames, but he knows that any he docs have “vary with the des-criber. Brother states that he wants “to be adequately prepared to teach,” but his students know that he has achieved his desire in this regard. He is especially proud of the “pursuit of academic excellence in Advisory 202.” In his spare time. Brother enjoys “golf when possible, basketball when not,“ along with “plenty of reading and Mozart.” BROTHER PATRICK Brother Patrick, a very competent and accomplished instructor, is the head of the English Department. His interesting classes are made even more so by the occasional but timely bits of witticism that have become his trademark. Brother’s ambition is “to help others and his mild manner of teaching seems to have had its effect in this regard. He is especially proud of the “spirit” here at Dc. When not teaching English or Religion, Brother enjoys extensive but selective reading. BROTHER DOMINIC Brother Dominic, a devoted religious and biologist, is both Senior Vocations Counselor and moderator of the Glencoe Club. He lists “being a good teacher” as his goal in life, and his sincerity in this regard has left an indelible impression on those whom he teachers. Brother fondly (?) remembers Steve Grabow-ski’s untimely operation in the middle of football season. In an occasional free moment, Brother indulges in handball, photography and biological collections. 8 MR. PAUL GRAF This colorful and popular member of the Senior faculty claims he has no nicknames but acknowledges that there are “probably plenty — behind my back. ’ Mr. Graf, a parishioner at St. Mark's in St. Paul, plans to go on teaching his traditional, yet unique, courses in Social Studies, Business Law, and Economics at Dc La Salle. In his few spare moments, Mr. Graf enjoys reading, studying, or just “walking and reflecting.” BROTHER J. OLIVER Brother Oliver, famous for his craft in Algebra, Geometry, Bookkeeping, and Religion, is also moderator of the Camera Club and Wrestling Team. Brother’s ambition is “To sec you all in heaven.” Particularly outstanding in his memory is the construction of the new addition. An avid devotee of photography, most of Brother’s spare time is devoted to this hobby. MR. DAVID BRESKE Mr. Breske is probably one of the most popular additions to this year’s faculty. Nicknamed “Salt” and “Leader” by those who know and love him, this clever humorist nevertheless states that he wants “to become a better teacher of mathematics.’’ Mr. Breske is a member of St. Kevin’s parish in south Minneapolis. In time not spent in teaching Algebra and Trigonometry, he is an enthusiastic participant and spectator of baseball. 9 HIS HOLINESS POPE JOHN XXIII. 10 MOST REVEREND LEO BINZ, D.D., S.T I). Archbishop of St. Paul 11 12 MOST REVEREND LEONARD P. COWLEY, D.D. Auxiliary Bishop of St. Paul Brother H. Mark, Brother Director of Dc La Salle, is right at home in his new post. He was the Director also at Price College, Texas, before coming to Dc in 1959. This is an excellent testimony of the respect the Order has for Brother’s leadership and administrative abilities . Originally from St. Joseph, Missouri, Brother Mark studied for the Brotherhood at St. Mary’s College in Winona. Brother has spent the past twenty-six years teaching at Dc La Salle, Chicago: St. Patrick's, Chicago; Price College, Amarillo; and Dc l.a Salle in Minneapolis. During his stay here, Brother has had a chance to observe the character of the school, and he is proud of its spirit and the cooperation shown him by the faculty and the student body. The combination of the magnanimous soul and the gifted mind of Brother Mark is not often duplicated. He has summed up his years of teaching by expressing what all men should feel in their hearts. Brother says, “I thank God for the graces given men in my vocation and for the many fine people with whom I have been associated in my work.” 13 BROTHER J. STEPHEN F.S.C. Senior Contact, under the direction of Mr. Colston, lias become one of the more active and effective organizations in the school. Its purpose is to help itself and others both spiritually and materially. In order to carry out these aims in a productive manner, the group has adopted a program composed of discussion and action, with the emphasis put on latter. Senior Contact has braced itself for a record number of projects this year. It has given assistance in the Sno-Dazc Dance; it made itself responsible for the distribution of the Christmas baskets; it has, by numerous suggestions, worked toward the betterment of the Senior Class; it has assisted in the maintenance of the gymnasium. But the biggest project was one by which the members became “Big Brothers” to sixteen underprivileged boys of grade school age. Members have spent many of their free week end hours with their little brothers in outings, parties, and other forms of recreation. Senior Contact has accomplished much in the past years; it is a fine example of what Catholic Action should be. “Contact's Big Brothers Christmas Party” BACK to FRONT, Left to Right; B. L’Harult, T. Hart, T. Kastl, and C. Luxem. The Junior Contact group, under the direction of Brother Fidelis, has recovered from a relatively slow start, and has blossomed into a productive and successful organization. With the indoctrination of many leaders of the Junior class, the group is experimenting in the teaching of Confraternity of Christian Doctrine religion classes to grade school students in the area. With the help of Brother Fidelis, the group is sure that the operation will be successful, as it has been for several years at Bcnildc. This new’ plan, when placed beside such past accomplishments as the annual Christmas food drive, foreshadows a profitable year for the junior group. Sophomore Contact at De La Salle is an organism designed to capitalize on the apostolic spirit present within the individual, a spirit given a special dimension through the sacrament of Confirmation. Through discussion and special activities of an apostolic kind, particularly through the teaching of Catechism to grammer school students attending public schools, the Sophomore Contact member continues to deepen himself and share his strength of love with others. A special project this year has been to extend Contact throughout the Sophomore department since it is a firm belief that the purpose of Contact is such that each Sophomore has a Christian right to belong and develop himself through the activities outlined above. These few days, sj ent in an environment of silence and solitude at Buffalo, Minnesota, gave the graduates to-be a chance to corral themselves to think. Upon arriving, the students were warmly greeted by the director, Father McManus, and briefed on the significance of the retreat. During the retreat the Seniors found time to pull themselves back to earth and realize what their main purpose in life is. Private conferences were offered by the retreat masters, Father Keg-Icr and Father Wagner. At the end of the retreat each Senior found himself with a renewed sense of responsibility and dedication to God. s E N I O R S E N A T E STANDING, L. to R. — T. Johnson, J. Stedman, P. Sexton, M. The Senior Senate is a group composed of the Senior class officers, the advisor)' presidents, and the semi-finalists in the September class elections. The purpose of the Senate is to shift some responsibility from the teachers to the students, thereby relieving the faculty of unnecessary burdens and bringing the idea of school government closer to the students. Consequently, since all advisories are represented, the entire class is familiarized with the senate’s plans. The senate is responsible for and controls the activities of the Senior class. It organizes dances, homecoming festivities, “Sno-Dazc,” various sporting events, and slogan and poster contests. But more important, the Senate sets the tone of the school. It is behind the student body one-hundred percent, and works its hardest to make the class and the school what it should be. This vocation club differs in that it has as its chief objective the will of God. It calls for unselfishness on the part of the members in that they arc expending themselves in behalf of the entire student body.” — Bcnildus Club Constitution. Under the supervision of Brother Dominic, the Blessed Bcnildus Vocation Club has become reinstated at DE. A part of the Archconfratcrnity of the Divine Child, this club promotes priestly vocations primarily through prayer. Also, as part of its program, the Bcnildus Club is organizing a vocation pamphlet rack to make available to students information concerning the various religious orders. The members meet during the first five minutes of the Senior lunch period in the Brothers’ chapel to recite a decade of the rosary. All seniors are invited. Organizational meetings are held once a month. Speakers are invited to these meetings to present and discuss various topics consistent with the club’s goals. Many worthwhile ideas and projects have developed from these meetings. The Bcnildus Club officers, Louis Grams, Charles Brambilla, Robert Abdo, and David Uhlcr, head the group of about thirty members. It is hoped that their efforts, together with the continuous support of Brother Dominic, will establish the Benildus Club as a worthwhile facet of Dc La Salle life. 25 STANDING L. to R: T. Louzon, R. Well, try to imagine a Delta or Islander without pictures of the vari-ious activities. Much as the two staffs hate to admit it, the readers look for the pictures first. Any article, no matter how well written, is given life by a picture. The few Camera Club members strive to supply all necessary prints promptly and cheerfully. The members believe that the experience gained from this activity will prove valuable in later years. Who knows, perhaps Mr. Plctsch started this way. 26 Bob Sorensen developing a picture. Only a few of the more courageous De men wear the white uniforms of the cheer leaders. Their purpose is to unify the student body in support of another activity. Their first purpose is to give; and, in the past year, their sacrifice and initiative have urged many De teams to victory. The National Honor Society is a nationwide organization whose purpose is to recognize those students who have made outstanding achievements in the fields of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. It is composed of high school Seniors who have been judged worthy of the honor by a board of faculty members. Dc La Salle’s chapter of the N.H.S. has been quite active this year. It has undertaken a variety of projects of benefit to the school. The Monogram Club is one of the more exclusive clubs in the school. Three standards must be reached before a boy can be accepted. These qualifications are: two major letters, a C” average, and recommendation from the administration. This year the Monogram Club, under the guidance of Mr. Vaughan, has been busy earning out its numerous activites in the school. At each home basketball game the floor is supervised and refreshments are sold by members of the club. The selling of “De” stocking caps was another project sponsored by the club. In April, a dance was put on to help defray the cost of the letter sweaters that are given to each new member. Composed largely of underclassmen, the team nevertheless showed great ability and even greater potential as its members participated in the American Legion, the Catholic State, and the National Forensic League speech tournaments. The team’s versatility was shown by the fact that it had at least one entrant in each of the various speech divisions: Original and non-original oratory, dramatic, humorous, and extemporaneous. Nearly 30 freshmen swelled the ranks to over 60 members, making the team the largest Debate Chapter in the Twin Cities. Futhermore, as a direct result of the influx of new members, this group has become the top team in the Twin Cities District with the largest number of degrees. The lx ginners placed first and second in the annual Catholic Invitational Beginners' Debate Tourney held at St. Thomas College, and captured first place in the Twin Cities Tournament for underclassmen. The team was also invited to a tournament in Washington D.C. Some of the highlights of the year included distinctive representation at the four student Congresses, trips to Mankato and St. Cloud, the late suppers after the U. of M. Tournament, the finals of the Round Robins, and the terrific competition at the District Finals. As an added note, the team is losing only three Seniors, so look for something promising in the future. STANDING L. to R: T. Sias, R. Brcun, J. Wawra, R. Hobday, D. Knstik, G. Kvasnicka, D. Under the leadership of Brother Roger and Editors Bob Abdo, Cyril Knoblauch, Mike Gruidl, Pat Coleman, Bob Brcun, and Larry Abdo, the Islander is trying for an “All-American rating for 1962-1963. The “All-American rating is the highest award given to a high school newspaper by the National Scholastic Press Association. It is awarded once cadi semester. The last time the Islander won this award was several years ago under Brother Paschal. Brother Roger has stated repeatedly that the school paper must represent all the students of Dc La Salic, and he takes great pains to assure this end. Some of the new features designed to give the individual stu- dents a chance to make their opinions known are Mr. Inquisitive, Students Opinion, and Campus Correspondence columns. In spite of difficulties, the Islander staff has been going through great effort in order to get the paper out on time. The editors have worked until midnight making up the issue to go to the printers. It is Brother Roger’s proud boast that the Islander has been on time each month this year. Some of the main changes this year (besides getting it out on time), are the expansion of the feature section, a regular cartoon, poetry, and the more frequent six-page issues. 32 M. Gruidl and P. Determined to present a comprehensive and yet informal picture of the school and student life, the yearbook staff industriously embarked upon its job early in September. A united effort made possible the completion of one-half of the book by Christmas, a feat seldom attained by a yearbook staff. Furthermore, this years group has set a precedent by adopting a demanding deadline schedule and rigorously sticking to it. In order to cover the spring activities, the staff decided to introduce a new feature into the yearbook, a summer supplement. Consequently, earlier deadlines, vacationing photographers, and staff dropouts necessitated all day (and all night) rushes to meet deadlines. Nevertheless, the supplement resulted, in which coverage was given to spring sports, the Rose Dance, and graduation exercises. Underclassmen M. Berry, L. Abdo, T. Kastl. and T. In late summer the seniors of the club held several workshops which covered the many aspects of stagework and acting. Later, a clinic was given for new members; after this the club put on its first presentation, a one-act play directed by club vice-president Pete Foy. In early December, the club, under direction of Brother H. Paul, presented what many critics consider the greatest of all American plays, Our Town by Thornton Wilder. This unique drama deals with the most important phases of man’s stay on earth — childhood, maturity, marriage, and death. The play was perhaps the most impressive put on at DE in recent years. In the middle of February, the club undertook the production of a recent Broadway musical hit, Bye-Bye Birdie. The play centers around the evolution of a rock and roll singer. Familiarity with the theme was undoubtedly a contributing factor in the enjoyment derived from the play by the students. The group can be proud of its accomplishments this year. The members have undoubtedly benefited considerably front their participation in the club, and audience response indicates appreciation of their showmanship. After four years of intensive practice with the De La Salle Chorus, Brother Fidclis is a veteran director. He brought the group back to life in 1954 after it had been dormant nearly a year. His talented direction and enthusiasm have given the chorus the desire to excel in vocal performance. Brother’s exacting methods have not only given the chorus members an appreciation for music but also made them aware of their responsibility to the school, the chorus, and one another. Through the cooperation of the officers, the chorus has maintained an efficient and smooth running series of concerts throughout the metropolitan area. Included in this year’s agenda were concerts given at St. Margaret’s Academy and the University of Minnesota and an appearance in the Arle Haberlc Television Show. Concerts given at De La Salle included the Patroness Society Christmas Concert, a performance for the Boosters, a joint concert with Holy Angels Academy, and the final Spring Concert which was the climax of the year. The Glee Club boasts its largest membership this year, with over ninety members, and looks forward to even more progress next year. 41 Business managers James Gamble and Mike Ness consult Brother Fidelis. Their accomplishments are as follows: They purchased a new motion picture projector for the school, they bought new jackets for the Glee Club, supplied the athletic department with various funds. They paid for the tuition for those boys whose fathers passed away. They spent a grand total of $23,600 for the students. The Boosters have done a tremendous job in this field mentioned above. In the State Meet they finished fifth, only 10 points behind fourth and 38 points ahead of their nearest rival. Sophomore Gary Tomc ak captured sixth place in a field of 42. He was clocked at 10:28. running the 1.9 mile Highland course. Seniors on the team include Gary- La Palme, Jack Clausen, and Rog Shasky. All are lettermen and outstanding runners. They have stuck with the team from its founding and have kept at it even though their fine efforts go practically unheralded. The runners kept in shape over the summer by running constantly. When school commenced, they began organized practices. Practice sessions were held on the hilly grounds of the Theodore Wirth and Highland courses. This made running at Lake Nokomis easier. The harriers have much to look forward to, though, because of the large numbers of good underclassmen on the team, Mr. Utecht, the coach, is looking with anticipation toward next season. 48 TOP ROW L — to — R Brother Hugh, (Coach), F. The team’s first game of the season, a 72—23 victory over Breck, was perhaps a good indication of things to come. Indeed, the team marched undefeated through its first nine games of the season. In their second meeting with St. Thomas, however, the cagers suffered their first defeat. Nevertheless, the team plowed onward to win its next three conference games with Hill, Cretin, and Benildc, thereby capturing the Conference Championship. As a result of their individual efforts, Bob Buckvold and Joe Manikowski were elected to the all-conference team, with Mike Rengel receiving honorable mention. The traditional regional battle with Benildc found the Islanders bowing 51—45 to a hot Red Knight scoring attack. For their sparkling performances in this game, Tom Finnegan and Joe Manikowski were awarded regional honors. This combination, diabolical dissector and impractical mathematician, is seriously thinking of a career in a field of science. Robert Abdo — First Vice-President Bob Abdo, the Lebanese contribution to the executive branch of the class of ’63, finds time to feed his ulcers by holding membership in NHS, Contact, Monogram Club, Homeroom Officer, Delta, and the Islander. Perfected co-ordination and reflexes have qualified him to participate in Wrestling, Baseball, track, penny pitching, and mission collecting. It is rumored that Bob has derived a code of living that neglects sleep, denies the unity of the family, and forms opinions. “Abby” plans to enter law — one side or the other. Steve Hedges — Second Vice-President This leafy character has flowered” in baseball, basketball, Delta, the Islander, NHS, Monogram Club, Contact, and as a homeroom officer. Steve is developing a superiority complex as a result of his performance as a National Merit finalist. Besides being ticklish he writes poetry. LOREN LYNCH — BUSINESS MANAGER The Senior Class Business Manager, Loren Lynch, is an alumnus of Our Lady of Victory. “Lo’s” current office should suit his taste for he is one of the biggest pressure salesmen in the school. In his junior year he won a trip to Chicago for selling far over a hundred Mardi Gras Tickets. When he isn’t fast talking someone, he is busy participating in various activities such as football, track, baseball, wrestling, and the Monogram Club. His current plans for the future center on being successful in college. JAMES GAMBLE — SECRETARY This year's scribbler “Secretary James Gamble’’ is well known for his unique sense of humor. Who else in the school can imitate every one of his teachers, can remember every anecdote from every class, and, furthermore, can do a great slow-motion fighting performance. A well rounded individual, Jim, has not only played baseball and basketball, but he is also a meml er of the Delta.
