J. Norbert; the other Senior Class moderator, Bro. H. Paul. The able and devoted direction of these two as well as their sincere concern for both our educational and spiritual welfare have left an indelible mark on this year's class and on the whole school itself. Therefore, with great gratitude and respect the Senior Class of 1962, on behalf of the school dedicate this year's yearbook to Brothers Norbert and Paul. Bro. J. Norbert, F.S.C. helping two students HIS EXCELLENCY POPE JOHN XXIII Theme By these words, Jesus Christ promised that His followers would possess knowledge of the Truth. That Truth was, of course, primarily religious; Christ sent His Apostles forth to tell the good news of Redemption to all the world. At the same time, however, the advent of Christ and the spread of His message inaugurated a golden age like that foretold by Vergil nearly a half-century earlier. The Christian spirit breathed new life into a decadent Roman culture; and when Rome itself fell, it cherished the finest products of that culture in monasteries and convents throughout Europe. That spirit has consistently inspired the finest philosophy, music, and literature in the world. In a liberal education we absorb the collected human wisdom of our forefathers as well as the priceless gift of Divine Revelation. The quotations at the beginning of each section are a mere sampling of that wisdom, both human and divine. The Director, Brother J. Norbcrt F.S.C. Brother II. Mark, F.S.C. ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS Brother D. Stephen, F.S.C. Death came to Archbishop William O. Brady of St. Paul in a Home hospital. The end came eight days after he was stricken with a coronary thrombosis attack Sept. 23, on board a plane en route to a Vatican meeting. Archbishop Brady was a suberb administrator, had a gentle heart and a brilliant mind, he was a zealous priest and an inspiring leader. He was a big man and showed his bigness in humble ways. The Archbishop was proudest of the Rosary Crusade and the Vocation Drive. His timely comments in his column Archbishop’s Observations and his drive for education in this diocese shall long be remembered. | MOST REVEREND WILLIAM O. BRADY. D.D., S.T.D., Archbishop of Saint Paul He that shall persevere until the end, he shall be saved St. Matt. 10:22 They that instruct many unto iustice shall shine as the stars for all eternity —Dan. 12:3 BROTHER LIGUORI JAMES, F.S.C. Brother Liguori James departed this life February 11, 1962 at the age of 54. Brother had served De La Salle as advisor, teacher, athletic director, basketball moderator and founder of the Booster’s Chib. He was known for his enthusiasm and spirit. Brother Liguori was truly a boys’ Brother. He took an active interest in boys, and in their welfare. Many troubled students came to him, with their personal problems. He understood these problems; and after counseling, the student left with new confidence. Lbkal arealcv wort than to direct the tninhjr au6 j-orni the character of thetjouiMj”? Brother John Chrysostom and his manner is notorious among the students of De La Salle. If you have ever been sick, you probably have struggled out of bed to answer his phone call. If you have ever tried to buy a candy bar during lunch time, he was there to see that you weren’t stampeded by your fellow classmates. His liveliness and quick wit have made life at De much easier (sometimes harder) for many students. BROTHER J. NORBERT, F.S.C. Director Latin II BROTHER H. MARK, F.S.C. He has a B.A. in mathematics from St. Thomas College. Mr. Odell intends to further bis education at the U of M to receive a M.A. in education philosophy. Mr. Odell lives in Hamel, and during the summer works a sixteen hundred acre farm in Oregon. Bowling, fishing, and hunting take up his spare time. Bro. Paul, advisor of 207, is in his sixth year of teaching at De-Brother. a native of St. Louis, taught in Chicago before coining here. This year Brother teaches Religion. English, as well as moderates the Senior Class and the Dramatics Club. As far as ibis last activity is concerned. Brother is known as the l est high school director in the Twin Citu s with his plays being consistently excellent. BROTHER L. PATRICK. F.S.C. BROTHER J. DANIEL, F.S.C. Brother Patrick, advisor to room 205, has taught religion, algebra and English. Despite this great versatility, Brother admits a preference for English. Brother will certainly he well-remembered by his classes: his quiet manner of presentation and mature treatment of students are refreshingly different from usual high school techniques. Brother Daniel, as head of the mathematics department, is especially concerned with the new and rather revolutionary S.M.S.C. This program is designed to give students an over-all view of basic mathematical structure. For relaxation, Brother Daniel enjoys listening to classical music from the Brother’s musical library and reading contemporary literature. PAUL S. GRAF Since 1952, Mr. Paul Grafs Hudson Wasp has been flying between his home and De La Salle. His classes of Problems of Democracy and Business Law are enlivened with mundane insight into human motives and actions. Being dexterous with puns, Mr. Graf often surprises his classes with clever levity. Mr. Grafs wealth of experience provides much of the class material as well as the text and outside sources. He makes an honest effort to present the students with a view point other than that received from the local press. Because of his experience and sense of duty, Mr. Graf is an invaluable asset to De La Salle. His altruistic nature makes him one of the irreplaceable among De's faculty. DONALD DU BOIS An apple a (lay keeps the poor work card away. This ancient 1962 philosophy has aided Mr. Donald du Bois in securing an unprecedented lead in the teacher health polls. Favorite topics Mr. du Bois emphasizes include his pet theme (next to his students) the Jesuits, Longfellow's propaganda and also Mr. Dwight Eisenhower. Currently teaching junior religion and senior English, he strives to prepare his pupils “to rejoin the human race. He is the proud father of a five year old son. Jim, whose profound knowledge of the idiot box and the alphabet stimulate his students to conquer the harsh facts of life. BROTHER J. OLIVER. F.S.C. One of the more illustrious members of the faculty at De La Salle is Brother Oliver. He is well known for excellent photography, ironical comments and for running a unique lost and found service. Although generally eas going. Brother can xisv quite a problem to an unluckly student who has come to the lxiokstore window to make a small purchase with folding money. Many of us will remember Brother Oliver sitting majestically at his desk in the front of the room (with ironclad control of the students, of course) and should anything go wrong, he would right it with his simple comment. That’s not good.” Brother Terence (Noble-hearted Gladiator) is the advisor of 121 (The Warriors). He was voted the most well liked teacher by the senior class; and our favorite teacher’s concern for each senior has earned him this title. Brother’s simplicity of spirit and his faith in people has done much to influence these with whom he has had dealings. His cxul ercnce of spirit is contagious, as any of his students and friends will admit. Brother Terence's physics classes, although confusing at times because of the subject matter, have been both enjoyable and enlightening. His students’ favorite quotation comes from Macbeth: “Throw physic to the dogs. I'll none of BROTHER J. EDWARD, F.S.C. Brother Edward (Old Clicker, as he is affectionately called by his pupils) is a Brother of exceptional talents. Not only is he a religion and typing teacher, but also head of our very successful athletic department. Thus he is deserving of a great deal of credit as the man behind the scenes. (His vast storehouse of practical knowledge makes his religion classes active and interesting.) In typing he represents law, order, and discipline. Brother Edward is interested not only in the mental growth of his students but also in their physical well being. FRANK MARONEY One of De La Salle’s most amiable sociology teachers is Mr. Frank Maroney. He is a veteran of 32 years in the teaching profession. Seven of the years he has spent here at De, where the students have grown to anticipate his smiling face. This well informed man received his B.S. degree at Mankato State and did graduate work at the University of Minnesota. He admires the seniors for their independence and their mature behavior. His insistence on proper class conduct gained him the respect of his students. Mr. Maroney has a colorful career as a teacher and coach. The seniors hold fond memories of his hard-hitting control of their freshman intramurals. $ocial 4 rl ricn.6 mau well be reckonc6 tl e masterpiece ot nature. merlon BENILDE WEEKEND Brother Norbert receives a standing ovation as a representative of WDC.Y presents the favorite principal trophy. Something that has never happened in the history of De La Salle took place this year. De students were given an opportunity to prove to the public that they had more school spirit than any other city or suburban school. Radio station WDGY held a contest in which students from all the schools in the area could cast votes for their favorite principal. In a final tribute to our principal, the men of De united and sent in 80,(X)0 postcards, which was over one-half of the total votes cast. This victory set the stage for one of the most enthusiastic pep assemblies ever held at De. The students’ cheers shook the rafters in an attempt to inspire the team to victory: a victory which meant a share in the CCC title. The enthusiasm paid off as the team went on to beat Benilde before 2,500 fans in the gym and cafetorium. Coaclt Reinhart addresses the student body. Enthusiasm runs high at Bcnildc game. De La Salle Homecoming is one of the most spirited occasions of the year. The events of this week were climaxed by the Homecoming dance on Friday night and the hard fought game against St. Cloud Cathedral on Sunday. As the week went on, the quality of the school spirit increased; and in the midst of the excitement, one of the better assemblies was held. At this time, the queen candidates were introduced to the school. During the Homecoming dance, the queen and her two princesses were chosen. Manv considered the dance as the “best yet.” others thought it was the “most spirited.” At the game on Sunday, the enthusiasm of the school was exemplified by the great number of students who attended the game. The outcome of the game was a loss for De La Salle in the score, but it was a success in that the school spirit reached new heights. f flf T m J V Escorts display their Yo-Yo skills. It was one of the first plays produced for the theater of today in which the general meaning of the plot is superior to the particular characters. The three main actors of the play were Mr. Antrobus, played by Jay Meffern; Mrs. Antrobus, played by Sue Wedl; and Sabina, played by Marcia Knight. Under the talented direction of Brother II. Paul, the play was a masterpiece of production. A play designed to be presented by a professional drama group was successfully presented by De La Salle’s Dramatics Club. Various activities for the different departments took place. The freshmen and sophomores played in an intramural basketball tournament while the juniors and seniors participated in a broom hockey contest. Each advisory could partake in these events. Secondly, Sno-Daze buttons featuring the slogan Plow em’ Under” were sold throughout the week. The buttons reminded the students to take part in the various events and to take an interest in our hockey, wrestling, swimming,, and basketball teams. Each team had at least one opponent during the week. Finally on Saturday nignt, the Sno-Ball was held in the auditorium. This dance was put on by the hardworking seniors. The Second Annual Mardi Gras Drive was a big success. Under the capable direction of Brother Augustine. a record of $25 per man was obtained during the official week of returns. Approximately forty thousand tickets were sold. The tickets, at $1.00 each, entitled the donator to many hours of excitement: the tickets could be used for either the Teenage Dance on Feb. 23, or for the adult Bunco Party and Dance on Feb. 24. For added attraction, the prizes of a 1962 Pontiac, a Corvair, a TV-Set, a Stereo, and two gift certificates were presented to the lucky winners. Father was a personal friend of Dr. Tom Dooley. Determined to help the doctorless people of Southeast Asia. Dr. Dooley founded the medical operation called Medico. Because this man was a current figure in history, each retreatant found particular significance in Dr. Dooley’s achievements. Me had based his life on an poem by Robert Frost. This poem summarized well the ideals of the retreat. The woods are lovely, dark, and deep. But I have promises to keep And miles to go before 1 sleep. AT KING’S HOUSE During January the entire senior class fulfilled one of its requirements for {graduation the closed retreat at King’s House, Buffalo, Minn. Father MacManus, the retreatmaster, greeted the retreatants and explained the significance of the the retreat to them. At first the students found the routine difficult, hut they soon became accustomed to it. Each retreatant took part in the spiritual exercises which included eight conferences. two Masses, and three Benedictions, including the Apostalic Blessing. In addition. Confession and private conferences were made available. The recreation periods consisted of football and skating. Upon the completion of the two days of prayer and meditation, each retreatant returned with a renewed sense of responsibility and dedication to God. Injuries to key personnel included separated shoulders to Harrer and Baker. Jeff Sievers first suffered a sprained ankle and upon returning suffered a concussion in his first game which kept him out of action for the rest of the year. The team is not to be belittled, however, for in spite of difficulties they captured second place. In the first game of the season De beat Bethlehem Academy of Faribault 7-0. Tom Finnegan scored for the Islanders from the five. The game was played on a cool windy day. This game was also marred by the fact that the officials did not show up and tne game was reffed by opposing coaches who came to scout. The next game against St. Paul Murray the Islanders easily defeated them 19-6. The highlight of the game was Dave Krider s 45 yard T.D. run. Also scoring for De were Schreder and Finnegan on short plunges. The team journeyed to Eau Claire where they suffered defeat-12-0. De was not up for the game and made a poor showing. Hill was the next team that De faced. The Islanders and Pioneers fought to a 6-6 tie. Stan Durda carried the pigskin over for De while Hill countered on a 50 yard pass play. Cretin got a quick touchdown and two more for insurance. In the homecoming game against St. Cloud, De lost a close game 14 - 13. It was in this game that Dick Schreder rati a hall back farther than any other Islander all season. Dick took the opening kick-off and ran it back 92 yards to score. The Benilde game had special meaning for the seniors. In their last two outings against the “Red Knights”, the Islanders were beaten. Through a hard fought first-half the game remained scoreless. But the second-half was a different story. After driving to the Benilde twelve,Tom Finnegan scored on a “Statue of Liberty” play. The “Red Knights came back.only to lose 13-6 as Dave Krider scored on a screen pass. In the last game of the campaign ,“De played a tough St. Thomas squad. Down 13-0 at the end of the first auarter, the Islanders rallied to win 14-13. In the second half Jim Wittman blocked a Tommie punt and Mike Collins fell on it for a T.D. Dave Krider scored the last touchdown on a 50 yard run. Excellent downfield blocking by Rick Taaffe and Bob Vincent paved the way for the score. Kelly McGurran kicked the extra point, and “De” won. By doing so the Islanders took second place in the conference. Special mention should go to Mike Collins—All-State, All-Conference; Ed Donatelle—All-Conference; and Dave Zens—All-Conference. Co-Captain Dick Schreder: Dick was the field general of the team. You could always count on Dick to call a good play when you were in the hole. Against St. Cloud Dick ran 92 yards for a T.D. Dick was voted the most valuable player on the team by his teammates, as well as the most valuable offensive back. Co-Captain Ed Donatello: The Dirty Swede ' was one of the best lineman in the conference. Many times he opened crucial holes for the backs to scamper through. Ed was chosen to the All-Conference team. Dick Slovak: Dick was the biggest man on the team. He was used mostly on defense, but he played offense too. Ed Fefgh: Ed didn't play football last year, but he played an awful lot this year. He played a very good game at end. Jim NVittman: Jim’s steady play won many games for us. In the Benilde and St. Thomas games Jim broke in to the opposing backfield and stopped the ball carrier before he got started. Bill Cronin: Bill was one of the most determined players on the team. Few were the times that his man broke up our plays. He was the most valuable defensive back. Kick Taaffe: Rick’s running was the major contributor toward winning the Benilde game. He was almost unstoppable in that game. Bob Vincent: Bob was most noted for his downfield blocking. He picked a man off of the ball carrier’s back on what proved to be the winning score in the St. Thomas game. Mark Lynch: Mark was the most determined player on the team. He was a defensive tackle who always plugged up the hole. Jeff Sievers: In spite of being out most of the season Jeff drew the praise of Mr. Parsons who said, Jeff is the best high school defensive half back I've ever seen.” Tom Ronyak: Tom didn't play too much but he was always giving it his all. Kelly McCurran: When Jeff was injured Kelly stepped in and fillet! the role that was required. He won the St. Thomas game with his kick. Dave Zens: “Froggie was selected to the All-Conference team for his fine defensive play. If there was a scrap Dave was there. Joe Biernat: Joe didn’t play too much, but when he did he was Johnny-on-the spot. Mike Collins: Mike was All-Conference, All-State. There wasn’t a In-tter blocker on the team. Mike was always hustling. Don Baker: Donny was out most of the season with injuries but when he was in there he was unstoppable. At the annual Football banquet trophies were passed out for: most valuable offensive back-Dick Schreder, most valuable defensive back-Bill Cronin, most valuable offensive lineman-Jim Wittman, most valuable defensive lineman-Mike Collins, and most determined player-Mark Lynch. Dick Schreder was also voted the team’s most valuable player by his teammates. Teammates rejoice as the “Islanders score against St. Cloud on Homecoming. The B-Squad this year under the guidance of Mr. Mahowald performed quite notably. After starting out slowly the team came on with a rush. Fine play was especially noted in the backfield. In the last few games the team played together very well. Mr. Mahowald expresses his opinion that next year many of these boys will be on the varsity. Mr. Mahowald realizes that many seniors are leaving the varsity, but says that his men will be able to meet the challenge ahead. When the freshmen first came out they were a sad sight. Very few were in condition, and very few had played football before. Mr. Erwin and Mr. Miller took these boys and taught them football. The team lost their first few games, but when they caught on they won their last games by impressive scores. Fine play was once again noted in the backfield. and towards the end of the season the line play was shaping up too. These bovs had a fine team and are proud of it. Another distinction held by the swimmers was an undefeated C.C.C. record. Brother Hugh, the coach, sums up the success story of the years team in three words-INSFIRATION, DEDICATION, AND PERSPIRATION. Marty Knight, a freshman was voted most valuable swimmer; while Tom La Croix was voted the most improved swimmer. Marty and Tom along with Bob Scott and Mike Rains accounted for all the individual records. De’s tankers are able to boast of having the fastest medley relay in the city. The relay is made up of G. De La Salles hockey team this year was the best ever since hockey started at De four years ago. Under the most capable coaching of Wally Irwin, in his first year at De, the pucksters finished second in the C.C.C. Benilde was whipped by the icemen 7-1 in the first round and 3-2 in the second. Tom Brundidge scored the “hat-trick in the 7-1 romp. Most exciting game of the season was the first meeting with Cretin. Tom Leonard scored on an assist from Dave Mortenson at 2:24 of the second period. The Haiders failed to capitalize and the score stood at 1-0. The Islanders had delivered Cretin their first Conference defeat in four years. The pucksters also scored the most goals in any one game while handing St. Bernards a 9-2 defeat. Jim Downham scored a hat trick plus one. Making all-conference for De were Jim Downham and Frank Recucki on the first team; Chuck Ilolt and Tom Hayes on the second team; and Bill Huney, Dave Mortenson and Tom Leonard receiving honorable mention. The icemen scored a total of 102 goals to 54 by opponents. Goalie Chuck Holt had 292 saves out of a possible 334 chances for a .871 save average. Ed Dalsin handled 161 chances and blocked all but eleven. The future looks bright for the Islander pucksters and they look forward to increased support by the student body. CHEERLEADERS Cheerleading is not a seasonal activity. It begins with the start of the school year, and ends with summer vacation. The cheerleaders spend many hours of practice in the evening as well as making great sacrifices to be present at as many of the school events as possible. Brother Michael says that cheerleading is not simply yelling. There is a certain mood in the crowd which the cheerleader must sense, and from this choose the cheer which will be the most effective. Our cheerleaders may not have been gymnasts, but they induced the crowd to cheer the loudest and yell the longest. Left to right: W. Bierdcn, J. Craig. R. Krause, W. Peterson. S. Eraser. R. Dargay, S. Quady, J. Yencho, T. Anderson. 3rd row: J. Meade, P. Kovar, B. Janewki. The “B” squad hockey team (frosh-soph) had an exciting season this year. Their final record for playing the Brother’s schools was 2 wins, three losses, and 1 tie. Cretin, the big opponents of the year couldn’t make any headway against the junior hladers. The final score after double overtime was De 3, Cretin 3. In the ten games played against public and parkboard teams De La Salle won five and lost five. The boys worked on fundamentals this season. Their coach, Mr. McGowen said, “I want quite a bit of skating especially flying around those nets.” Moderator, Bro. Kevin Stephen said that they have produced some varsity material for next year. The high point man of the season was Jim Humphrey who averaged two goals a game. Brundidge passes out to Mortcnson for the score. um WRESTLING The Wrestling Team: Back row: M. O’Connor, L. Lynch, J. Kilkelly, D. Hi Ison, J. Allard. D. Feehan, W. McQuiston, D. Krider, I). McClain, 1). Zens, J. Wittman, W. Belkengren, I). Baker, J. Bookev. Front row: T. Hauschild, B. Barheau, T. Lynch, S. Willette, J. DeCidio, T. Hikon, L. Rousseau, D. Collins, T. Ro ycki, L. Kreatz, W. Chaplin. This year's wrestling team was perhaps one of the best that DeLaSalle has had, as they captured two individual state championships, two second places, and five third places, coming within seven points of winning the State Team Championship. One of the prime reasons behind this great team showing was the depth throughout the weights. There were seven seniors on the team, making it a moderately veteran team. The lineup, by weights, for most of the year consisted of: 95 lbs., Jack De Gidio; 103 lbs., Jim Kilkelly; 112 lbs., Mike O’Conner; 120 lbs., Loren Lynch; 127 lbs., Don Hilson; 133 lbs., Jim Allard; 138 lbs., Dan McClaine; 145 lbs., Dave Krider; 154 lbs., Dave Feehan; 165 lbs., Bill McQuiston; 175 lbs., Jim Wittman; Hwt. Dave Zens. These and others helped to make a successful team. The team started and finished strong under the able tutelage of Mr. Horning. The season record showed only two defeats, both to arch rivals, Benilde, and the last by the score 22-21. Graduating this year were the originators of several new holds, including “the Country Boy, “the Pogo Stick” and the “Triple Arm Bar Scissors Grapevine.” Wrestling has increased tremendously in the past few years as a competitive sport, and will continue to draw more spectators and participants because of the speed and skill it demands and manifests. McClain and Allard get in some practice. Jim Wittnian gets in good position to check the pin as Don Baker begins on top of Dave Zens. The 1961-1962 De La Salle Basketball Team that won the State Tournament and tied as Co-Champions of the C.C.C. Kneeling: Co-Captains R. Hipwell, and M. St. Aubin. Standing L. to R.: Bro. J. Edward. De La Salle again produced a fine Basketball team. Led by senior co-captains Roger Hipwell and Mike St. Aubin the team tied for the championship of the C.C.C. The only loss tin's year was a 49-40 decision to Benilde early in the season. De avenged this loss, however, with two victories over the Red Knights. The team did not hit its stride until after the loss to Benilde. After Mr. Rienhart shifted the lineup several times the results that he desired were obtained. The starting five most of the year included Hipwell, St. Aubin, Joe Manikowski, Mike Rengel, and Lenny fenks. This team had great balance. Every member could hit from almost any place on the floor at any time. The leading scorers were St. Aubin and Hipwell, but the rest of the team was not far behind. Mr. Rienhart has said on numerous occasions that this team could easily l e one of his better teams. When at last the team did jell it was easy to see this. The Islanders could and often did come from behind. After they settled down and started concentrating on the game they were hard to beat. De had poise this year as seen by the results of the one-point games. De was in three and won them all. Some people have said that the Islanders couldn't score a lot of points, yet when they were needed most the Islanders went out and got them. The cagers this year proved themselves tops, and nertt year promise to be even better. There are only two seniors on the team. These two: Mike St. Aubin and Roger Hipwell along with Joe Manikowski won All-Conference honors. Jenks shoots over outstretched arms of Cadet. St. Auhin shows his All-State form. “C a lorries” Ringal shows rebounding prowess. Manikowski gives the downbeat and the ballet begins. Hipwell collects his extras. Co-captains St. Aubin and Hipwell lead the Hipwell goes up for two against Duluth way in scoring. Lenny Jcnks pours two through in the crucial Benilde game. Cruikshank for two more! Munikowski shows the form that made him All-State. Against Loyola Rog goes under the backboard and for two points. CAN ROGER BE STOPPED? Roger drives in and lets go for two more against the Red Knights. A welcome addition to this year's team was hard-working Mike Rengal. Here Mike hooks for two against Cambridge. St. Aubin goes high in the air to snag a pass against the Tommies. De Captures Regional And... Co-captains Mike St. Aubin and Rug llipwcll accept trophy for victorious Islanders. Action at the Regional game. Manikowski goes in all alone to solidify De’s lead. St. Aubin cannot be stopped by the Red Knights. Then Takes State Crown Entire Islander team accepts the championship trophy Leander gets a well-deserved ride from team and fans For the seventh time in nine years, Dick Hhinehart led his Islanders to the state crown. Under the able leadership of Co-Captains Hog Hipwell and Mike St. Aubin and the equally fine play of Joe Manikowski and Lenny Jenks De literally swept the tournament. Outclassing all their opponents in both offense and defense, De placed its second leg on the state traveling trophy. Fans give victorious Islanders wild ovation daring the trophy presentation. “B”SQUAD Standing: Coach W. Johnson, Manager D. Schultz, R. Montague. E. Komoroski. W. I Herault, M. Skelly, C. Slater, R. Norlin, T. Collins. D. Roth, C. Zurek. Kneeling: co-captains G. Evans, and J. Cronin. BSQUAD For the third straight year the squad proved tops among the sophomores in the conference. The team was so balanced that it was not uncommon to see ten lx ys play in each game. Cronin, Skelly. and Roth were the top scorers, with Evans leading in rebounds. Determination was the keynote of the team. Many times the team overcame large deficits to win. The team will carry on the great tradition of DeLaSalle for the next two years. FRESHMAN The Freshmen again proved the team to beat in the Conference. Aside from the fact that the team lost only one game, another fact stands out. This is the fact that the team entered a Y.M.C.A. and won the tournament. In this tournament De was entered against teams from all around the city. High scorer was Riney who led the team all year. The team was, we feel, the best Freshman team in the city. FLY TEAM The all-stars of the Saturday league once again dominated the less fortunate grade schools. The Fly Team's record stands for itself. The team completely dominated the other schools. The boys lost only one game, and that to the Freshmen. Under the organization of Mr. George Utect, the track team and cross country team of De La Salle promise to be the finest since track started at De in 1956. The general spirit of the team has improved and since sports such as track and cross country require a great deal of personal development, the desire and effort of the players is of the greatest importance. The cross country team placed second in a Christian Brothers Invitational meet, tied with Cretin, and are promising even greater things. This particular team has come a long way since its beginning two years ago. Benilde seems to be the track team's strongest opponent, with De's Don Baker being the strongest contender to deal with the Red Knights. While track and cross country sometimes are overlooked by the student body, they provide a chance for courageous students to strengthen themselves l oth physically and mentally. The spirit among rival teams is one of the most friendly since the competition is mostly between individuals and not the entire school. One of the team’s most valuable players, Don Baker, shows excellent discus form. Ted Seep concentrates on his coming put. “CROSS-COUNTRY First row, seated L. to R.: G. La Palm, J. Schuler. T. Due to the late arrival of spring, the team was not able to begin practice until well into April. Since the Monogram Club has been opened to non-athletic activities, and with the fine leadership of Brother Terence, the group has become one of the most active at De. The group has sponsored hops, ushered at basketball games, and began the custom of wearing their letter sweaters every Friday. The Monogram Club should typify the spirit of the school and the senior class, and by its many and various activities, this year, the group has done just that. Von Ende measures Jim Downham for his letter sweater as other members of the club look on. The Senior Senate meets to discuss an upcoming school event. This year marked the appearance of the Senior Senate as a governing body of the school. This group is composed of the senior class officers, the semi-finalists in the class elections, and the senior advisory presidents. The group plans and controls the activities of the senior class. Since all senior advisories are represented, each senior knows what the senate plans to do. This fact accounts for the great success of all the activities sponsored by the senior class this year. Participation in the Dramatic Club is a considerable liberalizing influence in a DE-man's education. From what one can learn through the Dramatics Club, it can be an education in itself. In fact, from the standpoint of value derived, it can be said that the Dramatics Club is the most worthwhile activity at De this year. This year to aid the members of the Dramatics Club, Brother Paul has taught the members at several workshops things which pertain to all facets of dramatics. Brother hopes that participation in the Dramatics Club will give a student a taste for the fine arts in general, and dramatics in particular, which he will employ the rest of his life. Many students think that the finest thing about the Patroness society is that they give the students a half-day holiday once a month. Despite the opinions of the students, this is not the purpose of the society. The society tries to help the faculty, the students, and the school anyway possible. In conjunction with the Boosters Club, they sponsor dances for the parents. At their monthly meetings, the members tirst discuss the business of the club, and then have a social hour with forms of entertainment which appeal to the mothers of high school students.
