We feel that their contribution to the school de- serves further recognition. Every member of the lay faculty makes financial sacrifices to further Chris- tian education by teaching here. ln addition to their school duties, they take a great interest in the extra- curricular activities of the students. More important, by their example of intellectual honesty, self-sacri- fice, and charity, they inspire simi- lar practices in the students. 6 Ei mu In .AL if-L-7 In l I COR AD COR LOQUITUR Y T w f MOST REVEREND LEONARD P. This year the Delta has taken its theme from this prayer. The Father, represent- ing creativity, is the symbol ,for the activ- ities section. The Son, the standard of per- fection, is symbolic of the student section. The Third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, who gives us love and enlighten- ment, is symbolic of the faculty section. The Delta feels that this is an appropriate evaluation of life at De La Salle. are In the holy presence of Godf' we-b.,.,,,.c Brother Norbert takes a brief respite from his administrative tasks. Brother Norbert, Principal, is a man of many traits and various abilities. Besides doing his regular administrative duties, Brother sometimes acts as a substitute teacher. He can always be depended upon to help a student with his sage advice. This coming August Brother Norbert along with his assistant principals Brother Mark and Brother Hillary will celebrate their Twenty-Five Anniversary as a Christian Brother. 10 MNA Left: Bro. Nick vvas interred in the National Cemetery at Fort Snelling, Nick will not soon be forgotten by the facultv and student body of De La Salle for his many years of devoted service. 13 . E I x 1 K 1 ! E 1 The ringed hand is a representation of God the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity. lt is symbolic of His great love and of His work of enlight- enment. The Holy Spirit completes the work of sanctifica- tion begun by God the Son. He is the guide and inspira- tion of all Chris- tians. The teachers of De La Salle act as instruments of the Holy Spirit, guiding and enlightening the boys under their care. Thus, His symbol is an appro- priate one for the faculty section. Mr. Dziedzic writes down an important population statistic during his world history class. He also is coach of the sophomore football team. Two new D teachers, Mr. N. Four record holders: R. Gibbs, K. Ketter, L. Kreatz, B. Scott. The swimming team, dominated by underclassmen and led by Brother Hugh, have a T3-3 record to date. The team has set new school records in all events execpt the 40 yard freestyle and the IOO yard backstroke. Co-captains of the team are Carl Ketter H3085 and Gary Fuerstenburg i203l. Two of the most important meets were against Henry and Edison. Our tankers won the first meet 40-38. It was decided in the last event, the freestyle relay, which set a new school record. The latter meet was lost by one point due to inexperience in the diving event. Our home pool has no diving board, the team often must forfeit eight points in the diving events. Brother Hugh has coached the team for two years, and has built a strong team. He hopes that in two years we will have a team comparable to any in the state. The B team is made up of less experienced swimmers who swim with the A team against weaker opponents. Three starting Freshmen and seven Sophomores are expected to return next year, while we will lose only four starting Seniors. 43 Football OPPONENTS DE Bethlehem . ., . O l4 Hill ..... . The season opener in Faribault brought a solid vic- tory over Bethlehem Academy, i4-O. Scoring the two touchdowns were tullback Dick Berry and haltback Lou Socco. The offense accounted tor over 300 yds. rushing in the tumble ridden game. The lslanders easily managed an inexperienced Hill by a score ot 33-O. A 7-6 victory over Eau Claire Regis before their ca- pacity homecoming crowd gave the De men their third consecutive vvin. Down 6-O at halftime, the Islanders chalked up 6 quick points as Lou Stocco sped 70 yards on the first play of the second half. Jeff Sievers kicked the game winning point. A disastrous second half caused De, on homecoming day, to bow before co-conference champs Cretin. The Islanders were able to counter only in the fourth quar- ter when a 35 yd. scoring pass from Mike Jacob to Lou Stocco provided the hnal 6-l3. St, Cloud Cathedral submitted to a bruising defense employed by De as the Islanders thumped the Cru- saders 9-O. Off to a fast start in the first quarter Sen- ior halfback Lou Stocco scampered over right tackle for IO yards. Later Jeff Sievers kicked an ll yd. field goal to Hnish the scoring. At Austin Pacelli, the Islanders squelched homecom- ing day by capitalizing on an Austin miscue in the final minutes. The determined Shamrocks took com- mand I4-I3 with only minutes left in the game. A Pacelli fumble in their own end zone was pounced on by a host of Islanders for a safety and the deciding point. De La Salle nipped the Cadets from St. Thomas in another close contest QI-I9. Fullback Hugh Fleetham tallied in the first quarter on a 3 yd. plunge. Then quarterback Mike Jacob hit end Tom Feehan with a 22 yard touchdown aerial resulting in a I4-I2 halftime lead. The Cadets came back to score and take a I9-I4 lead only to lose when Stocco scored from the 7 yd. line late in the fourth quarter. The progress that has been made is due largely to the efforts ot a good coach, Jim Schliesman, and a hard working moderator, Brother Arnold. The team had a good record this year, although it was not as good as had been expected. They started out very tast with a close lose to Cretin and wins over St. Cloud, Benilde, St. Thomas, and Hill. The tlrst round also included a tie with St. Agnes. The second round found the De pucksters tlounder- ing. Although they had plenty ot shots, they couldn't seem to hit the net. They lost to Cretin, Benilde, and St. Thomas. The team has great expectations tor next year, the graduating Seniors will be replaced by a fine group ot Frosh. 56 19 X Burke takes the puck from the danger zone while Burnes looks on. We ot lO6 like to think that our ups tar exceeded our downs Bringing in eleven boxes per man in the Christmas Card Drive certainly kept the spirit in T06 . . . up. The mysterious appearance ot Santa at our Christ- mas party enlivened our spirits for he brought a gift for everyone. But all was not on the light side. Quality work was demanded by our competent teachers, especially by Brother J. Leonard, our od- viser, Now and then they had to keep us down so we could remain up ' on doing the right thing. Francis, compiled a fine record, fin- ishing Third among Catholic schools. in the state. This was a building year, with an exceptionally young team, only one player being lost Through gradu- ation. Brother Francis loolcs forward to an improved record next year as This year's underclassmen mature. This year's Team was especially distinguished for its fine net play. Notable in this department were James Kilkelly and Michael Gallagher. The most outstanding member of the team was Ronald Meyer. Due to his uniformly expert perform- ance in the Catholic State Tennis Tournament, he de- feated all opponents and thereby became the state's Top Catholic tennis player. Brother Francis was gratified by the consistently fine play demonstrated by the members of his squad. He counts on an even more successful season next year, and hopes that many more interested players will ioin the team.
