Delta 1960 Presented by the Senior Class De La Salle High School Minneapolis, Minnesota Hail to thee, blithe spirit! Bird thou never wert. That from heaven, or near it, Pourest thy full heart In Profuse strains of unpremeditated art. Higher still and higher From the earth thou springest Like a cloud of fire; The blue deep thou wingest. And singing still dost soar, and soaring ever singest. 2 V TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction..........................Page 1 Underclassmen.........................Page 12 Activities ...........................Page 50 Sports................................Page 72 Social ...............................Page 98 Seniors...............................Page 108 3 The seniors, in the name of the faculty and underclassmen, dedicate the 1960 Delta to Brother Norbert, Principal. Advisory 1C, located in the basement of the C building, is an average freshman class. The students apply themselves to their school work with diligence and a will. Every marking period five or six boys are on the Honor Roll. The members of the class have great school spirit. They attend the athletic events regularly. About ninety percent of the class is enrolled in some extracurricular. During the Christmas Card Drive and the Magazine Drive, 1C made a good showing. All during the year 1C has been among the best in support of the school and school functions. Bro. Clarence finagles F. Wandzel, J. Gunderson, and M. Boyd. Freshman 1C BROTHER J. Although we have placed six men on school athletic teams, we have maintained ourselves well in intramurals. The abilities of the men of IOC have not been limited to the field of athletics. Our room was one of the top rooms in the school in the magazine drive placing first in the Freshman Department. We placed third in the school in the Christmas Card Drive. Because of our abilities and hard work, we of IOC have accumulated one of the richest treasuries of the school. IOC is worthy of praise and thanks for what it has done for the school and the students of the future. L. to R. 1st row: J. Clausen. W. Smisek. F. Stefanoc, J. Buckley, W. Madison. G. Wickman, G. The men of 12C make it a point to attend and support school activities, but not to such an extent that it detracts from their studies. This fact is borne out by the four 12C’ers on the semester honor roll. Generosity is a keyword in 12C and these fine lads have won the mission banner four times. 3rd row: L. Oien. D. Aykens, W. The exuberance of Freshmen is not lacking in regard to the members of 13C. They finished with high standings in both intramurals, basketball and volleyball, not through extraordinary players, but through the over all ability of the whole class. Room 13C, one of the better Freshman advisories, has men who participate zealously in sports and also represent the school in the bleachers. This same school spirit drove them on to a high place in both the Christmas Card Drive and the Magazine Drive. With all these activities it is amazing to see that one fourth of the class are honor students. Freshman 13C V. Balma and T. Coleman are shown how to send code by Mr. Zetah. MR. Class Officers: President—David Kurimay, Vice President—Thomas Leonard, Secretary—Michael Ness, Treasurer—Michael Christian, Sgt.-at-Arms—Dick Mulloy. Room 20C is a room of many contrasts. We boast an occasional student with a full complement of athletes. We are all proud of our intramural record. One event that we recall vividly is the game we played with the Brothers defending our volleyball prowess. Our participation in the magazine drive is also a fond memory. We turned in over 175% of our quota. The homeroom response was tremendous as usual. In all our endeavors we try to do our very best. We firmly believe in the opinion of our advisor: The home room that tries to do the best docs its best. L. to R. 1st row: J. Vargo, R. Ahrens, J. Schuler, G. Osgood, D. Blassingham, J. Hall, E. Class Officers: President—Peter Lazar, Vice President —Tim Johnson, Secretary—John Connelly, Treasurer —Paul Krosselt, Sgt.-at-Arms—David Taylor. Freshman 21C was near the top in the Freshman Department in nearly all respects. In intramural basketball they placed second. In volleyball they placed fourth. The room took top honors in the Happy Hour, an athletic event for all Frosh advisories. In the Magazine Drive they were in the fight for first place among the Frosh. For two days of the drive they held down first place. Second place in the Christmas Card Drive went to 21C as they again ranked among the elite of their department. This has been a profitable year for all. L. to R. 1st row: M. Gillis, G. Pauly, J. Mick us, E. Roy, J. Smith. B. Ryan, L. Rousseau, P. Krosselt. 2nd row: J. Matula, J. Balluff, R. Mangan, L. The “go getters” from 22C have a monopoly on athletes. This lively group of young men proved their prowess in both intramural and extra-curricular athletics. Eleven other frosh advisories tried in vain to beat 22C’s spirited volleyball team. Through their deft skill, the go getters won the 1959 volleyball championship. 3rd row: D. Berseutek, H. Cope, L. Their splendid reputation as the muscle men of 22C carried over into the activities. During the first semester, this room contributed eleven athletes who qualified for letters. Proficiency in sports is only part of the total picture. These well rounded scholars arc famous for their school spirit as was proven in the Christmas Card Drive. In the academic realm, they boast many a fine English student. Finally, their generous mission collections prove the go getters are serious mature young men possessing a proper sense of values. Twenty-eight are actively engaged in a variety of extracurricular activities: They are a fun loving bunch but they are not afraid to work hard when necessary. In De’s Magazine Drive, they placed third in the department. They were second in the Christmas Card Drive. Their devotion to the school, however, does not eclipse their devotion to studies for they are well represented on the semester Honor Roll with 15 students, 23C is a room of well rounded individuals the like of which the school can be proud of. Room 24C is a fine example of freshmen with terrific school spirit. In both the Christmas Card Drive and the Magazine Drive they sold over their quota. The Christian charity of these students was well displayed throughout the year. They filled three Christmas baskets, and were the recipient of the mission banner many a time. This spirited homeroom also contributed to the athletics of the school. The basketball, hockey, and football teams contained members of proud 24C. Due to very still competition, they had a rought season in intramurals, but they took third place in basketball. The biggest sports accomplishment of the year was their victory over 20C in the basketball competition. These and many other things make 24C a credit to the Frosh and the school. L. to R. 1st row: J. One on the honor roll— we’ll never be condemned for vain learning. We are privileged to be the only Freshman advisory quiet enough to be placed next to the halls of the academic office. As gym-nighters, we rank second to none. “Frequent and Funfilled” is our motto. Yes, we of 226 are proud of our homeroom and our parents should be too. We captured the mission banner in the Frosh department over Parents’ Night for additional prestige to our room. Bro. Jerome points to an interesting object for J. Riley and R. Shasky. The sophomore room with the lowest number is 224. This does not mean that our room is the lowest on the list of school supporters. At all of the school games and school functions our room is very well repre- sented. In the majority of the activities we have men who are very representative of their home room. We, as members of the sophomore department, are proud of the school and what it stands for. In everything we do we keep in mind the principles for which our school stands. Under the fine leadership of Brother Ambrose, the room showed amazing enthusiasm in all the activities in which it participated. A new school record was set by the room in the magazine drive turning in over 350% of their quota. Every room member turned in over $50 showing their fine spirit. The room also did very well in the Christmas Card Drive. Practically all the members of the room arc engaged in extracurricular. Brother Ambrose himself is an active moderator of several activities. Advisory 300 appears to be a typical sophomore room. There was a large percentage of participation in extracurricular activities. As with most sophomores, there was ample school spirit as shown by attendance at the various school functions, especially the games. Mr. Bohen’s chance boards seemed to spirit the class on to high goals in the mission collection and the Christmas baskets for the poor. The men of 300 are well on their way to becoming “crazy teenagers” as shown by the fact that almost half of the room have their drivers licenses. The most important attribute of the class is their ability to study. About half of the room are honor roll students. It was learned after extensive research that he favorite pastime of the students was the study of Latin. Latin was not the choice of pastime however. We arc well represented in just about all of the extracurriculars. Our intramural standings came as somewhat of a disappointment. After winning a number of games in the first round, our team went into a slump just missing the championship. Our room gave a true picture of its capabilities during the magazine drive. We took the distinction of being third in the school, missing second by just ten dollars. As you can see, we are not slackers when we are called to work for D. L. S. Both individually and collectively, we, the sophomores of 303, exhibited fine homeroom spirit and excellent co-operation in all activities of the school. As a class, we sold well over 100% of our quota in the magazine drive. In the Christmas Card Drive we also exhibited our fine spirit by selling well over 100 boxes. As individuals, many of our men are entered in some of the many extracurricular around the school. In all of these, the men of 303 have been standouts. Scholastically, our class did well. We balanced our fine school work with outstanding successes in the intramurals. We took the basketball championship, but we could only take second in a tight volleyball race. L. to R. 1st row: J. The spirited members of advisory 304 are a group of high-minded young men, who spend a large amount of time and energy in building the reputation of De La Salle. Their cooperative spirit is shown by their outstanding accomplishments in all school projects. The class members, realizing that a good Christian is built by those who do more than the required amount of work, devote their time freely to the extracurricular activities of the school. They are well represented in a number of these activities. The men of 304 do not allow their active spirit for the outside activities to interfere with their studies. They recognize that academic achievement is their focal point. Some of the outstanding men of 304 set the precedent for the sophomore class. Mr. Simmons checks the results with F. Condon and T. Room 102 is the room of the homemade auction. Whenever 102 would be in need for money, their illustrious teacher would pull from his desk a few candy bars and auction them off. Some went for as high as two dollars a bar. This came in handy during the magazine drive for it helped us to get a few extra days of no school. The auctions consisted of two types: the regular type of auction and the De La Salle type. Everyone knows what a regular auction is. A De La Salle Auction is a little different, however. In this type the bidder turns in whatever he bids for an object no matter when or what he bid. That is, every time he bids, he pays. Fabulous amounts can be made in this way. B. Highfield and T. Ours is one of the best advisories in the school. To prove our point, just look at the things we've done. We had record first day returns of $744.87 in the magazine drive. We were the Junior Department champs and ranked fifth in the school. We also had the second highest individual salesman in Dick Ludwig. The magazine drive is not our only accomplishment. We have sold pop at the school dances and through this and other means have amassed a treasury of $150. With this we plan a big picnic at the end of the school year. Many of the boys in our room represent the school on the athletic teams. Those that don’t play for the school show their spirit by representing our room in intramurals and attending the games. Mr. Johnson is the proud proprietor of Gambler’s comer. Any time anyone has any extra money and is willing to try the boards, he is always welcome in 105. Far and away the majority of the boards concern the athletic endeavors of the school teams. Every so often to add a little extra spice, he puts out boards for games of local and national importance such as the Rose Bowl game. Despite the example of their teacher, the room has some rough tendencies. They do their homework and attend the games. They are sporting and fair. They play golf after their teacher. This council shifts some responsibility from the teachers to the students, thus relieving the faculty of some unnecessary burdens. It brings the government of the school closer to the level of the student. This council performs many important services for the students. It organized dances and sporting events while serving as a go-between for teachers and students. The members of the council set the tone of the school. The National Honor Society is that group of young men who have excelled in four fields: leadership, intelligence, personality, and outside activities. Belonging to this organization is not all roses and lace, however. For many past years the chief duty of the N.H.S. has been to answer the phone in the office. The object of the Patroness Society as stated in the Constitution of the Society reads: “The advancement of Christian education co-operating with the Brothers in promoting the spiritual, moral, and temporal welfare of the students of De La Salle.” That the good mothers do this is evident from the activities in which they participate. This year they have acted as hostesses at the Dedication of the New Building, at each of the four Parents Nights held for each department in school, at the Speech Festival, at the Inspection of the State Accrediting Committee, and at the Senior Commencement Communion Breakfast. They raised money in various ways including the Talent Show that was such a fine success in every way. They combine social relaxation and fund raising in their monthly luncheon meetings and their less frequent Ma-Pa Hops. Their non-profit socials include the Father-Son Banquet and the Mother-Son Mixer. As one would expect, the mothers are interested in their sons and in all of their activities at school. They are willing and anxious to help any and all of the school projects succeed. Individually they urge their own offsprings to success; collectively they energetically strive to aid the teachers in any way they can. Caught at the Patroness Society Talent Show, these women are shown in the midst of their act. They took part in one of the most successful Talent Shows ever. The Society is to he complemented on the efficiency of the management and the quality of acts. Next year looks even more promising for the Talent Review. 1st row, L. to R.: B. Dalsin, J. Before being admitted to the club, a senior promises to pray and sacrifice willingly that De La Salle be blessed with vocations to the priesthood and religious life. The Benildus Club hopes that it is instrumental in drawing down God’s blessing upon all the students as it asks His help for all De-men in finding their true vocation and in persevering therein. The Benildus Club of the Class of 1960 was particularly pleased with their April meeting—a panel of three of our archdiocesan priests discussing their noble vocation. Catholic seniors from the entire twin cities area were invited to this program. L. to R.: Benildus Club Moderator, Brother Hilary: Vice President, Bob Dalsin: President, Joe Gillespie; Secretary, Tom Theissen. 55 The aim of the club is to offer opportunities whereby members may develop poise, artistic appreciation and the opportunity to express themselves creatively. The members should also come to appreciate and to understand human nature and life situations through doing rather than by studying. Not only does the club offer opportunities for acting, but it also creates and develops such activities as constructing of stage scenery, designing and making costumes, working out lighting effects, planning and executing stage settings, making up characters and actually doing some play directing. As an extra-curricular it also adds recreation and entertainment for the school community. The club is a member of the National Catholic Theater Conference and the National Thespian Society, Troupe 1289. Dramatic Club 1st Row: J. Heffern, M. Cady, J. Craig, S. Fraser. 2nd Row: J. Gill, D. If at a dance anyone in the dark suddenly saw light, it was due to the clicking of the cameras owned by the bugs. Brother Oliver is one of the best camera men ever to come to the Island. To the men in his group he has imparted information priceless in its value to those interested in photography. Camera Club Brother Oliver shows W. Bedor a new developing tank. 61 L. to RT. Wirth, M. The art club has a two fold end: for the student body in general—the augmentation of the aesthetic and cultural ideals implicit in a Christian concept of education; for the artistically talented in particular—the cultivation of various forms of the plastic arts by mutual encouragement and by the judicious acceptance of school projects. 1 hrough its exhibits this newly founded organization has won the commendation of our administration and faculty and the enthusiasm of our students. Its future looks very bright. Many of the placards seen around the school have been designed and painted by the members of the art club. The stage backgrounds for the school plays were painted by members of the art club. For a relatively new club, the artists of the school have done very well for themselves. Their moderator. Brother Clarence, has in his own way spurred them on to a high pitch of perfection. A school exhibition in the new building brough nothing but praise. The art club has secured its place in De La Salle. Art Bro. Clarence looks over the shoulder of L. Grams and gives his ideas for the artist to think over. 62 Sealed: Brother Bernard, T. Asher, J. It provides an outlet for students with creative and literary talent. The staff publishes nine issues per year. In addition to acting as a stimulus for school spirit, it serves to entertain its readers. Most important of all, it strives to give an accurate picture of life in a Catholic High School. The Islander this year has been very good in all aspects of its coverage. Equal space has been given to office seekers as required by federal law. It has been serious when such was the call. It has been tremendously funny in the Insular Rumor column especially. Every month the student body looks forward with expectation to the coming issue. Each issue serves to wet the appetite for the next issue. The departing seniors will not forget the Islander and its reporting knack. 64 Paul Revere Vosika delivers the Islander in the Chemistry Lab. Although the football team had a below average season, the players showed a desire to win throughout the year. The team, under the direction of a new coach, John Parsons, was plagued with inexperience; this accounted for the slow start the team got. After losing the opening game to Edina, De bowed to three tough opponents: but John Mulloy blocked the conversion attempt. De held the Crusaders on the two yard line as the game ended. Next De downed Pa-celli by the score of 13 to 7. De next opposed St. Thomas. Football The first touchdown of the game came when Bill Rand threw a block that enabled Bob Spinner to go 85 yards for the score. Terry Layer added six more points when he went over from the eight yard line. Dave Kos added the extra point which made the score 13 to 0. St. Thomas’s lone touchdown was made by Swenson. The wrestling team had a very successful year. Under the coaching of Mr. Horning, the junior dominated team turned in a season record of twelve wins, two losses, and one tie. The team beat six of the Twin City schools, as well as Benildc and St. John’s. The two losses were to St. Cloud and St. John’s. Something new was added in the way of wrestling meets this year, that of a Catholic State Meet. Five schools entered the competition. De La Salle finished behind St. Cloud, with St. John’s, Benilde, and Cold Spring following respectively. Dan Dalsin was the only wrestler from De that placed first. Mike O’Connor, Bruce Louiselle, Art Grandpre, Marty Shallbetter, and Jack Delvin were second place winners. De can look forward to another good season next year as well. The team will lose only six seniors, including co-captains Jack Delvin and Marty Shallbetter. Dan Dalsin receives his trophy for taking first in the State Meet. 89 McLaughlin turns his man over.
