From this point, the trail of printer's ink leads up a rocky road, littered with broken typewriters and All-American awards. The Islander staff members receive their assignments about Vi weeks before the paper goes to press. After the articles are corrected by Brother Paschal, moderator, and the various editors the paper is arranged at the make-up meeting. It is but a few days after that when the monthly Islander is received by the students. The Islander of 1958-59 added a few more laurels to the paper's record and was also rated as one of the top papers in the state. The Benildus Club was named after Blessed Brother Benildus of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. The club is composed of seniors who realizing the need for increased vocations to the priesthood and the religious life, have decided to offer up extra prayers and sacrifices for that objective. The members also beg God's blessing on the students of De La Salle that each may find his true vocation in life. Meetings are held on the last Mondoy of each month. Guest speakers from the various orders are invited to inform the members regarding the duties, requirements, and othe features of their life of service to God. Members pledge themselves to pray for vocations and to say the fifth decode of the Rosary daily. Brother L. Walbert is the moderator of the group. This past year they have helped the school financially by buying new curtains for the stage, and by alleviating many of the other material needs of the school through their generosity. The Patroness Society also is responsible for sponsoring the Father-Son Banquet and this year, for the first time, they began to sponsor dances for the parents. The members, which consist of mothers or relatives of students and alumni, meet monthly at De La Salle during which time the students receive a half-holidoy. The Biology section this year is under the direction of Brother Benedict. They have a well equipped remodeled lab to work in. This includes a special annex where experimental ani-mols are raised. These animals undergo special tests to determine the right kinds of diets that should be used. These experiments provide these biologists with not only accurate results but with the correct method of scientific procedure. The club enables the enthusiast of living things a chance to study his hobby without the use of the text, teacher and grades. Paul Kroska makes a quick check for possible new roots. Physics Chemistry For those interested in the nature of things the Science Club provides this special division of physics and chemistry. These scientists are not satisfied with just the material given in text books of the high school level. Instead they do research on their own. For example they have viewed scientific films, listened to lectures, visited scientific organizations such os Honeywell, and took a trip to Saint Mary's. The moderator is Brother L. Robert. James Kitchen, Ray Pash, Laurent Dick Norby, Edward Roth, Andrew Far too many young people who are interested in some aspect of Amateur Radio, never make a go of it because of tho high cost of equipment. This is the main reason for the existence of a radio club at De La Salle. This year the equipment was furnished by the school and by a few generous students. After a few weeks of hard work, the station was put on the air with excellent results. Both the east and west coasts came into talking range. The station is operated on 10 meters under the supervision of WOZNE and KOJQE with the authorization of the Federal Communications Commission. Other activities of the club are field trips and aid in obtaining a license by instructions in code and theory. Officers of the radio section are Pres.-den. ALUMNI The De La Salle Alumni Association has continued their fine work in preserving high school friendships as well as helping to cut costs of the new edition to the school. Their main money raising project this year was a dance held in November. In April, the Alumni members were reunited at their annual banquet to renew old acquaintances. The Alumni Association moderator is Brother Hilary and Alumni president is GLENCOE CLUB Probably the most unknown organization at De La Salle, but one that has done much for the school is the Glencoe Club. The Glencoe Club consists of the parents and relatives of Christian Brothers who are from Minneapolis as well os the parents of boys who are studying for the religious life. The Glencoe Club has two primary interests, to provide social gatherings for its members and financially ossist the Brother's Juniorate, both of which were accomplished by a card party lost fall. The question debated this year was Resolved: That the United States should adopt the essential features of the Russian System of Education. Besides having an over all winning season the DE Speakers coptured individual awards among which Andrew Buechele's first and John Wronski's third were taken at our own DE tournament. WINNING SMILES are shown by John Wronski, Br. J. Leonard, and Steve Robb as they go over the results of how DE captured second place in our speech tournament. A WINNING Debate case takes many hours of hard work too and above we see Gary Hackenmueller, Matt Linn, Roger Bergman, and Andrew Buechele preparing their debate cases for the NFL District Debate Tournament. It proved our downfall, however, for against Boys Town, De lost by one touchdown (21-14) and in the Homecoming game Cretin made us bend our knee again. De rebelled against the losses and defeated St. Cloud Cathedral (32-19). When meeting Regis, De squeezed by to win in the lost fifteen seconds by ono point.
