BROTHER JOHN VICTORIAN Men to Remember The elder statesmen of De La Salle, pictured on this page, head a list of Brothers and lay teachers that the Senior Class of 1958 honor and esteem. Brother John Victorian can be seen on almost any sunny day, working in the yard and talking quietly and pleasantly to passing students. Who could ever forget him at the basketball games sitting under the balcony, wearing his old driver's cap? Now the South Side librarian, Brother John V. is a living example of taking life as it comes. Of course everyone knows Brother John Chrysostom. If you have ever been sick, you probably have struggled out of bed to answer his phone call. If you have ever tried to get a drink between classes, he was there to see that you weren't stampeded and your teeth knocked out by classes just released. His liveliness and quick wit have made life at.DE much easier (sometimes harder) for many students. Certainly these two men deserve much recognition for helping boys meet Christ over a total space of more than a century. The Seniors will also remember the freshman year, when Brother Joseph told unfinished stories, when Brother K. Felix taught English and pep, when Brothers Anthony and Albert tried to ram algebra into our thick skulls. Some of the most underrated men at DE are the lay faculty. These men lead a double life: heading a family and teaching class. Truly these men lead dedicated lives. For them, as for the Brothers, teaching is a difficult life, many times without apparent rewards. All the faculty will be remembered for something. It doesn't matter if you had Mr. Graf for Problems in Democracy, or Mr. Bohen for history, or Brother Hugh for biology. We shall remember all the faculty in the years to come for their genuine interest in the students. The proof of their generosity is the fact that they have endured us for years and still wish to go on in their unselfish work. BROTHER JOHN CHRYSOSTOM 13

Looking backward now at the terminus of our high school education, we accept the fact that our classes, certainly the best of them, have been governed, not by a democracy, but a benevolent monarchy. Without enlightened one-man rule, there would have been daily chaos. Yet the success of all our instruction has always, in the last analysis, depended upon us. It has depended upon that teamwork—that cooperative spirit which is the controlling theme of this yearbook. Teamwork in class means rapport with the man in charge,-it means participation in discussions, projects, competitions —anything proposed by the teacher for a better understanding of the subject. And we can honestly report that we have enjoyed those classes most where we contributed most, where we were made to feel that we had to act and give, not sit and take, if we were ever to become educated men. 14
