(DINNjeAPOUS PUBLIC LI eUAHY zke DELTA NINETEEN FIFTY-EIGHT presented by THE SENIOR CLASS DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA IN THE CHAPEL MHC - 373 M 5D33 9 52 TJf' r for the morning rosary is a typical DE homeroom. Each day a different class can be found in the chapel, following an old DE tradition Since religious life is stressed at De La Salle, it is natural that the students should seek spiritual guidance in front of the altar. In the morning the sunlight streams through the beautiful stained glass windows, which portray St. John Baptist De La Salle and other noble servants of God. THE CLASSROOM --------------- is the most important room in the school. From the woodshop to the chemistry laboratory, from religion class to last period, the students at De La Salle are instructed in the basic principles of all phases of learning. The room in the picture is a change from the usual class scene, because of a modern trend in education. However, there still remains the crucifix, a symbol of the Christian environment in which De La Salle students are taught. THE HOMECOMING DANCE on the night of February 1 was the usual success. The De La Salle men and their dates danced to the refreshing sounds of the Commodores. The dance was the highlight of a weekend, marred by a close lose to St. Thomas Academy in the homecoming The senior sponsored event sported red and white streamers from a huge Tip to Bellhops button hanging from the center of the gym. Instrumental in promoting the affair were Tom Cracraft, Tom Burke, Ken Fisher, and mostly Brother Paul. game. HOCKEY THIS YEAR brought some of the De La Salle athletes outside. Under the supervision of Brother Felix and Coach Medved, an exceptional rink was built and kept flooded. This crisp scene shows the ruggedness of a sport that has taken over Minnesota. Hockey was also well accepted at DE, and a successful season indicates that the school will continue the sport at a major level during the coming years. Brother Norbert and Brother Martin, Every large, successful organization has members who possess a winning spirit, give quick cooperation, and show energetic leadership. It is also true that there are other members who have to be prodded because of lack of interest. For the group to be successful, the people who have the Final say must hove the first three qualities in abundance. De La Salle is no exception to this rule. During our junior and senior years on the Island, we have all been influenced in some manner by the leaders of our organization, Brother Norbert, Director, ond Brother Martin, Principal of the Island School. These men have done everything possible to keep the reputation of De La Salle at its peak. ymbols of Leadership The theme of this book is teamwork. Each section tries to illustrate that khe successes and proud moments which come to us are only a result of [coordinated work. Nothing could be done without the help of the front joffice, as nothing could be done with dissension in the ranks. In this sense Brothers Norbert and Martin have never failed to avert any unnecessary hardships on the students. Kindness has been the byword tin these last two years of high school. Therefore, it is with a deep sense of admiration and thankfulness, that the Senior Class proudly dedicates the 1958 DELTA to Brothers Norbert and Martin, a'coordinated team and symbols of leadership Most Re ferend Leonard P. Brother John Victorian can be seen on almost any sunny day, working in the yard and talking quietly and pleasantly to passing students. Who could ever forget him at the basketball games sitting under the balcony, wearing his old driver's cap? Now the South Side librarian, Brother John V. is a living example of taking life as it comes. Of course everyone knows Brother John Chrysostom. If you have ever been sick, you probably have struggled out of bed to answer his phone call. If you have ever tried to get a drink between classes, he was there to see that you weren't stampeded and your teeth knocked out by classes just released. His liveliness and quick wit have made life at.DE much easier (sometimes harder) for many students. Certainly these two men deserve much recognition for helping boys meet Christ over a total space of more than a century. The Seniors will also remember the freshman year, when Brother Joseph told unfinished stories, when Brother K. Felix taught English and pep, when Brothers Anthony and Albert tried to ram algebra into our thick skulls. Some of the most underrated men at DE are the lay faculty. These men lead a double life: heading a family and teaching class. Truly these men lead dedicated lives. For them, as for the Brothers, teaching is a difficult life, many times without apparent rewards. All the faculty will be remembered for something. It doesn't matter if you had Mr. Graf for Problems in Democracy, or Mr. Bohen for history, or Brother Hugh for biology. We shall remember all the faculty in the years to come for their genuine interest in the students. The proof of their generosity is the fact that they have endured us for years and still wish to go on in their unselfish work. BROTHER JOHN CHRYSOSTOM 13 Looking backward now at the terminus of our high school education, we accept the fact that our classes, certainly the best of them, have been governed, not by a democracy, but a benevolent monarchy. Without enlightened one-man rule, there would have been daily chaos. Yet the success of all our instruction has always, in the last analysis, depended upon us. It has depended upon that teamwork—that cooperative spirit which is the controlling theme of this yearbook. Teamwork in class means rapport with the man in charge,-it means participation in discussions, projects, competitions —anything proposed by the teacher for a better understanding of the subject. And we can honestly report that we have enjoyed those classes most where we contributed most, where we were made to feel that we had to act and give, not sit and take, if we were ever to become educated men. 14 CLASSES 15 E. De La Salle has gained a tremendous reputation through athletics in the past four years, and the school reached an all time peak in the number of contests won. Naturally the school strives to maintain this tradition, and the students have an almost jealous spirit concerning the teams. This spirit in the De La Salle following, the students, Brothers, and alumni has made the records possible. The school has hired men of the highest caliber to coach the boys, with the hope that more than winning would be emphasized. This is actually more important, but with the whole city to draw from DE has done well in both respects. An example of the instruction DE athletes get is the picture at the right where Mr. Reinhart is giving the team a pep talk before the Regional game with Benilde. V SPORTS Varsity Football The Varsity finished the 1957 season in great style, trouncing the last two opponents by large scores. This fmol show of spirit mode the season record six wins and two losses. This was a marked improvement over the previous season. The only thing keeping DE from proclaiming if a greot year was a first half letdown in the 14-7 heartbreak agoinst Cretin. This kept the Islanders from capturing the CCC title. The Boy's Town game could hove been closer, but had someone given DE a few breaks. The team reached its peak in the homecoming win over S'. Thomas. It was a great night for the Islanders as Finnegan, Smith, and Albers, behind powerful blocking, Crushed the Codets. Tackle Bob Praus celebrated with a TD also, to the delight of the fans, and especially queen Jeanette Boehnke, his date for the dance. The spirit continued in the season finale against Brainerd. DE won a mudfest in the rain, 39-13. Co-captains Mike Finnegan and Bob Praus Mike Finnegan set up four touchdowns with beautiful runs. Rog Albers scored three of these and Mike the other. Charlie Smith was the long gainer with two great runs of 60 yards, one on a pass from Albers. The Islanders received ten places of mention in the All-Conference ratings selected by the St. Paul Dispatch and Pioneer Press. Bob Gavin, who did a greot job at guard all season, Rog Albers, and co-captain Bob Praus, a great tackle, were named to the first team. The other co-captain, Mike Finnegan, Charlie Smith, John Derus, and Jim Tobias made the second team. On the honorable mention list were Paul Connelly, quarterback Mike Mulligan, and Dave Dooley. Smith led the Islanders in individual scoring with eleven TDs. Albers scored ten from fullback and passed for several more. Finnegan ended up with nine, getting three in two different games. Grid The Islanders were under the direction of head coach Fay Frawley and assistant Bill Johnson.. The varsity moderator was Brother Ambrose. The senior-dominated squad came through much better than was expected. They showed their spirit and love of the game by putting forth their best during every game. Although the team did not win the CCC title, the big loss to Cretin came at the start of the season and many of the players felt that a return match, although impossible in football, would have been different. The respective scores of the St. Thomas games seemed to indicate that the De La Salle team had improved tremendously. Another unique honor was bestowed upon the team when captain Mike Finnegan was given an invitation to try out for the annual North-South High School All-Star football game to be held in August. 50 Albers brought down aftetr long gain against Cretin. tripped up after nearly breaking away against St. Cloud. Spirit ALBERS breaks into the clear in the Boy's Town game at the Parade Stadium. He was caught thirty yards later. DERUS DIVES after Boys' Town star quarterback Wilber Hollis. Coming up fast are Mike Mc-Sweeny (68) and John Jaruszewski (21). 51 JON ANDRESEN scores behind screen ogainsi Red Wing. GARY RASMUSSEN shoots over defender's outstretched hand. MARK BROSNAHAN lays one up in win over Regis. Year of Experience BOB DALSIN takes his favorite, a jump shot from the circle. The youthful Islander basketball squad finished the season with a nine win and eleven loss record. However, many of the losses were due to inexperience. Coach Reinhart experimented a lot with several players, and as a result, DE should put a polished team on the court next winter. There were only two seniors on the team, Bruce Evans and Bill Brown. DE opened the season with three wins, but the eventual State Champ, Austin Pacelli, stopped a 12 game streak for the Islanders in the fourth game, at DE, 40 36. If was typical of the seoson, close and hard fought games. This started a downfall as DE dropped four more in a row. Two of the losses were in a Holiday Tournament to two-time North Dakota champ ('57-'58i Bismarck, and to Minot, who also made the Nodak tourney. The Alumni game could be called an exhibition os DE stars from the great teams came back to play again. The best night for DE fans was when the Islanders outplayed Red Wing at DE, 58-51. After that came a series of close games. DE was nosed by Cretin in the last three minutes at DE, 65-60. Then came a squeeze over the Red Knights by one point, and a loss at St. Cloud where DE lost on free throws, a common occurrence. A heartbreaker by the Toms at Homecoming, a comeback against Regis, and another nose by Cretin ended the seoson. A host of loyal Islanders, inspired by a pep talk by Mr. Reinhart, were bitterly disappointed as DE went down to defeat before Duluth Cathedral on the opening afternoon of the State Tournament. The DE-men had gained the Region Three spot by edging Benilde again, this time 51-48. A great team performance tied the all-time scoring record, 78-59, in the first Consolation game. DE then lost the rubber game of the seoson to St. Cloud for the Consolation final, 52-47. Each had won one previous game from the other. Hockey De La Salle's first entry in the Central Catholic Hockey Conference proved to be a hard fighting squad that was in every game until the final whistle. Many of the games were close and losses in several of these games deprived DE from participating in the Private School Hockey Tournament. Rog Albers, Dave Dooley, Bob Corredato, and Jim McCoy were instrumental in making 1958 a successful season. Albers was injured for several games after suffering facial injuries in the Cretin game, but Dooley took up the slack and ended up as top scorer with seven goals and three assists. The swimming team usually took the mojority of first places in the individual swimming events of a meet. On the other hand, the other team would take the second and third places; this, together with their winning the diving and one relay race, was enough to defeat the DE team. As a result, the final record for the season was one win and eight losses. Individual swimmers who did well were coptain Paul Hile, one of the top swimmers in the state,- Bob Anderson, who holds the school record for the backstroke; Franz Von Rabeneau, who took first place in the majority of his orthodox breaststroke roces; and Rog Anderson, who was defeated only twice in the butterfly. Other swimmers who contributed markedly to the team's total were juniors Jim Morgan, John Ringstrom, and sophomore Bob Spinner. BOOSTER CLUB OFFICERS left to right, Mr. Mark Brosnahan, Mr. George McDonald, and Mr. Ernie Andresen. Booster Club The newest and the most enthusiastic organization at De La Salle is the Booster Club. The club was formed in the spring of last year for the purpose of De La Salle athletics. The Booster Club's main work is the raising of money in various ways for the school teams. Two of the Boosters' pet projects are the Alumni-varsity basketball game, held during the Christmas holidays, and the Spring Dance, which was held earlier this May. MULLIGAN eat peas and pork chop . CELEBRITIES Bob Ryan, Brother Norbert ot the mike, Mr. Charles Crepeau hidden by the flower , and Brother Martin attend football banquet. Hardworking, personable officers of the Booster Club—Mr. Mark Brosnahan, Mr. George McDonald, ond Mr. Ernie Andresen make successes of the projects they sponsor. Each of these men has a son active in DE athletics, but is by no reason their only interest. Club membership is a two dollar yearly donation. Only in the second year of existence, there are already over two hundred members in the club. 65 Some of the most joyous moments of the school year come when the results of hard work are brought to light for the whole student body to see. Certainly at DE the dances are very much a part of our development. So also are the plays and other large productions which are arranged by a few for the enjoyment of many. This work is not unrewarded, because of the tremendous spirit with which the features are received. It is at these functions that real school spirit is shown, and without full cooperation by all, they would not succeed. It will be only in later years when the fruits of such labor will be observed in the individual, but it is real team work. 66 67 FEATURES Homecoming 58 (Upper Left) DUNCAN PINHEAD stars at pep rally. Tom Mangelsdorf and Larry Landry move the controls. 69 The highlight of the Dramatic Club's season came on Dec. 15 and 16 when DE Thespians presented the three act musical comedy, Life It Lightly. The play itself was written by Brother Paul and Brother Ignatius. The latter Brother also composed some of the songs for the presentation. The leads were played by Dick Montville and Betty Tell, a student from St. Anthony High School. Minor roles were ployed by Dick Gill, Jerry Hass, Phil Schaffer, Tom Gebeck, Katie Weiland, Sue Jacobs, and many members of the De La Salle Glee Club. SWEETHEART OF SIGMA CHI: Marge Meadows (Betty Tell) is serenaded by the whole cast in their formal attire at the fraternity ball. De Musical Comedy SURPRISE! yells Jerry Flick os he invades Marge's solitude by means of a box. The story centered around Life Magazine photographer, Jerry Flick (Dick Montville) and his girl friend, Marge Meadows (Betty Tell). While Jerry is covering a world premiere, he meets and falls for the star of the movie, Luella Lush (Katie Weiland). This causes an argument between Jerry and Marge. At the Prom Marge is chosen the sweetheart of Sigma Chi. As a result of this, Luella leaves Jerry. However, Jerry and Marge re-unite, and the play ends on a happy note. In the right foreground is the modern freshman building. At the far end of this structure, a new library will be added. It will project several feet outward; large glass wondows will add a rare touch. The locker rooms for the new gymnasium will be in the basement. The gym itself is the larger building in the right rear. If will hold 1,800 fans. The present Brothers' house is the figure at the center, in behind the gymnasium. The sophomore building is at the upper left, and the main building is at the lower left. The new building extends far out info right field, being about twice as long as the present main building. When put into use, it will take the place of the Wentworth building, which has housed DE freshmen for the last six years. Certainly the atmosphere of DE will change, as more students are added, but this fine example of teamwork is a tribute to the Brothers and the Archbishop for their interest in perfection. 75 Above: Take out your notebooks! Through these clubs, De men learn to work together with others who have the same interests. All possible interests are taken care of by the extracurricular program. For the musically inclined the glee club or pep band offers the most; for the more intellectual, there are the Chess Club, the National Forensic League and the Stamp Club; for journalism interests there are The Islander and Delta staffs,- for those seniors who want to help in a spiritual way, there is the Benildus Club; and the Dramatics Club, Camera Club, and Science Club provide activities for any remaining interests. When we look at the fine achievements of these groups, we realize they are due to one thing— teamwork, the same teamwork that is present in sports, studies, and all phases of De La Salle lifel At the left the Glee Club, one of the largest of the groups, practices under the direction of Brother Ignatius. 79 This year's Senior Council was composed of all senior class officers. There were, however, two divisions to it, the first being the Council proper, and the second the senior senate, consisting of the senior advisory presidents. Brother H. Paul was senior moderator this year and headed the senior council. The senior department officers for 1957-1958 were as follows: President, Mike Finnegan; Vice-President, Bob Praus; Vice-President, Roger Albers; Secretary, Bruce Evans,- Treasurer, Charles Neerland; Business Manager, Bob Gavin. Seniors judged by the foculty to be outstanding in studies, character, leadership, and service are inducted into the organization known as the National Honor Society. The society is intended primarily to grant recognition to deserving seniors for accomplishments in these fields. To be outstanding in studies, according to NHS standards, means a B average. This presupposes a certain degree of diligent application over a period of four years. Leadership is primarily by way of example. Membership in the society assumes that a person has been in a certain sense admired, or looked up to by his classmates. Leadership is also exemplified by active participation and support of projects undertaken by the school. FRONT ROW: M. Coulombe, R. Hunstad, H. Netkow, G. Gorski, J. Montague, C. Neerland. National Honor Society The service recognition includes participation in extra-curricular activities, voluntary assistance in such class enterprises as dance decorations, stage preparation, and magazine drives. Character is probably the most essential of the four attributes honored by the society. By virtue of the fact that a student is designated a young man of character, it is implied that he con be imitated by the underclassmen vying for similar honors. FRONT ROW: Rog Anderson, P. Giles, T. Roger Anderson, President; Robert Anderson, Vice-President; and Ronald Parrish, Secretary-Treasurer. These, together with the chairman of the four divisions, hove all worked together to make this club one of the outstanding ones on the Island. General sections were held on Mondays following the issuing of report cards, and each of the four sub-divisions of the club assembly met once each six-weeks period. Alumni Association The De La Salle Alumni Association has, through the years since its inception, strived successfully to achieve a twofold purpose: to preserve associations and friendships formed in high school days, and to come to the aid of De La Salle in its varied needs. This year the social side was well taken care of with a dance in the fall and a banquet in early May. Not forgetting today's students, the Alumni have established scholarships to defray the tuition of deserving students. The club's special interest is the boys and young men who are in training to be Christian Brothers—some of them in the novitiate at Glencoe, Missouri—the others at the Scholasticote at St. Mary's College, Winona, Minnesota. This year, os every year, there were two major social events on the Glencoe Club calendar: the card party in late fall and the dance in the spring. In addition, there will be a picnic in mid-August for the members. The Islander Over the post year the Islander staff has accomplished the time-taking job of putting out nine prize-winning editions for publication. The attraction that has brought many new members is the addition of school letters for fine work. The moderator. Brother Paschal, deserves much praise for his skill and leadership in the Islander's publication. Diligently tho staff strives to put out the next publication of the Islander. The Delta like all yearbooks, is a luxury —but an indispensable one. Once a very wise man said, Give me the luxuries of life and I shall dispense with the necessities. Ever since September, when the yearbook of '58 was only a splendid idea, the men of the Delta staff have been quietly anud painstakingly working behind the scenes, putting the book into shape. In so doing they have shown authentic school spirit, as much as the hardest playing men of the football and basketball teams. Their aim was to produce the finest book possible for De La Salle. 91 Camera Club This yeor the Camera Club of De La Salle was revived under the direction of Brother Oliver. The club aided the Islander throughout the post year; and because of the need of pictures for the Delta, the club's high quality work was found to be indispensable for production of the yearbook. Along with the seniors who took pictures, Brother Oliver deserves a great amount of credit for his leadership and for sacrificing his time in the faking of photos. DEVELOPING pictures for the Islander are Otto Schmid and Tom Ulmer. ENLARGING Delta photos are Phil Schaffer and Kenny Heim. CAMERA CLUB. Left to right: J. Kol-lodge, T. Ulmer, K. Heim, O. Schmid, P. Stamp Club Brother Felix, philatelist, is the moderator of the smallest organization on the activity roster. The Stamp Club, though very few in number, find profit and enjoyment in tearing off corners of envelopes and collecting stamps issued by all nations and for various occasions. We wish our collectors good luck in a worth-while hobby that may prove to be as lucrative os well as enjoyable. Left to right: Bill Whitfield, Franz Von Rabenau, George De Roma Chess Club The Chess Club at De is made up of quiet but sharp amusement lovers organized by Brother Gabriel. The members meet about once a week and pair off against each other. Many lively arguments have arisen when discussing certain plays and moves. At various times they engage in interscholastic contests. Their victory over Cretin earned a spot on the sport page of the Islander. Our calculating chessmen, even though unheralded, are among the most dogged players DE has produced this year. SEATED: S. Robb, D. Sullivan, J. Kurimay, J. Wolf, R. Bergman. SECOND ROW: M. Linn, P. In early 1958 the De La Salle Chapter of the National Forensic League reached a milestone as it became the third largest chapter in the twenty-two school Southern Minnesota district. This year's Speech and Debate Club is made up largely of juniors and sophomores. The DE debate teams participated in many tournaments. In one of these, the State Catholic, the inexperienced Islanders compiled a record of two wins and four losses. De La Salle also took part in the N.F.L. District Tournament, where four men established a 3-3 for De La Salle. DE also had the opportunity to participate in numerous speech tournaments, among which were St. Mary's (Winona) Speech Tourney, and the NFL District contest. The speech and debate moderator is Mr. Bernard Szymczak, who has established a reputation for excellence in this field. 94 UPPER LEFT: I SENTENCE you o . . ABOVE: RALPH and his bus. ABOVE: DEE, the Island mascot, looks out at passing students. In the interim between high school and the years that follow, the graduate looks back to the years maliciously devoured by time. He remembers the strange new atmosphere of his freshman year . . . the Brothers, Latin, algebra, gym class, the football games ... but mostly the Brothers. Next year he finds himself in another strange place, the Island. Because he is experienced in the high school world, he feels more at home. He is active in a couple of clubs and never misses a basketball game. In the junior year the goal is in sight. The year drags on. The studies grow more difficult. The spring days get warmer; he hunches his shoulders and gives it one more try. He's made it! The school ring is finally on his finger. But something has happened; he is about to graduate, and looking backward, the years seem very short. The wonderful, eventful senior year has whistled by, and the end has come, even as it comes to all good things. 97 SENIORS BROTHER H.
