You soe the ottock again, a sudden roviston of plans, the flash of block, and then tho some procedure all over again Yep, yoo couldn't help noticing the almost legendary figuro of Brother John C. You wonder where o man gets that kind of vim, vigor, and vitality, and almost simultaneously you oxcloim, By Fulton lowis. Jr., he's over eightyl You mumble, i Say, yoo'ro old enough to be my great grandfather, j and he answers, What an honorl And thon you got on to one of the most controversial of topics, the secret of Brother John C's longevity. In 1874. when Ulysses S. Grant was serving his second term In the White House, and the Wild West was ot Its wildest, Brother John C was born In Newport. Kentucky !K To ii'fii wc ■ tlixi. At the age of thirty-throe, he ontered the Congregation | of the Christian Brothers and during the past fifty years he has served thot Institute in just about every large city in the M.d-Wesf including twenty-one yeors ot Saint , Patrick's High School on the fringe of Chicago's skid row. Brother John C. was loved by almost every policeman in Chicago ond was presented with a special gold poke badge In recognition of his work with youth in that city. This is typical of the effect he hos on people who have come to know him Five yeors ogo Brother John come to De lo Salle He has had on ossorted collection of duties here, but, j as he soys. Too real thing thot keeps me from growing old is tho kids I work with all the time I keep them hopping ond they keep mo young ■■■I This year Brother John celebrates his golden jubilee- I fifty years a Christian Brother, an accomplishment any-ono could bo proud of From these focts and from his conversation, wo learn 'i a lesson in life from Brother John C. Tho pooplo who cross the path of our lives ore guided by the hand of God, calculated to hove tome effect on us His sanctity, his humor, his downright goodness-ond the effect that those characteristics hove on those around him-arc probably tho roosons for his long ond obviously hoppy life Perhaps if we were to dovelop these qualities God might permit us to live long enough to say, Life begins at eighty. In the years to come the Class of '57 will hove mony memories of their high school days ot De Lo Solle. but certainly one of the most outstanding w.ll be the memory of the little man with the big smile. Brother John C. : dicato our yoarbook. During the post school yeor the death of the Most Reverend John Gregory Murray. beloved Shepherd of the Archdiocese ol Saint Paul, saddened all who knew that illustrious prelote. Much has been written about the inspirational Me ol this great man but perhaps if could'all be summarized in this one line from the Catholic Bulletin!
