Some of us fully appreciate what these Brothers are doing for us. Yet, most of us do not reolize what goes into the making of o Brother, let us, therefore, to enlighten ourselves, compare the souls of these, our beloved Brothers, to that small silver bell which rings forth in this singular year. Within the course of their twenty-five years of teaching, the gifts of Wisdom and Understanding have been alloyed with Faith and Hope. Forged by blazing Charity and fiery Purity of Heart, these virtues soon began to take the shape of a bell; not just any bell, but one so strong in virtue that it is now almost impregnable to the forces of evil. With the strong, stout hammer of the grace of God and tho anvil of patience ond humility, both working unceasingly to attain this bell's unblemished finish, all imperfections ore being pounded out. Perseverance, the clapper of the bell, constantly rings forth ond brings out all its virtues and qualities. It is that same perseverance which made these Brothers abandon the pleasures of the world for that vocation which His Holiness, Pope Pius XII, described in saying: These Brothers are honored of Heaven with a special and complete vocation, likened closely to the dignity of tho Priesthood. They ore not serving the Church under the clergy but are serving on the level with priests. While this bell was being made, the Brothers' motto, Signum Fidei, was deeply imbedded upon their minds and hearts. The Sign of Faith, Faith in God and His graces, Faith that God will reward them with Paradise for all their sacrifices. But now, Signum Fidei may be seen upon their glorious bells engraved by their twenty-five years of teaching. Judging the future in light of the past, it is the firm belief of the students of De La Salle that Brothers Quentin, Albert and Anthony will polish up their bells and keep them shined. Kso thot when they ore taken to Heaven they may ring loud and clear alongside the throne of God. Therefore, to Brothers Jarlath Quentin, Hermes Albert ond Hilbert Anthony we. the Seniors of 1955, do proudly dedicate our DELTA. !■■■■■■■ Oil . BROTHER JARLATH QUENTIN, F.S.C. Student is quarterback Dole Kaiser. South St. Paul DE opened the 1954 football season with an impressive 39-0 victory over the South St. Paul Packers in a non-conference game at O'Shaughnessey Field. Fielding a powerful backfield, the Islanders ran through the opponent Packers at will scoring almost at will. Senior Larry Daly racked up three of the TD's. Dave Lies, junior half, scored the first touchdown of the game on the first play from scrimmage. Defensively, De La Salle was superb smashing every Packer attempt both on the ground and in the air. One of the thrills of the game was John Hartwig's interception of a South St. Paul pass. John outran three of the Packers for a TD but had the play called back on a penalty. Regis, Eau Claire Eau Claire, rated one of the top teams in Wisconsin, was DE's second victim. But De La Salle did not have the easy time with Regis as they had against South St. Paul and barely managed to squeeze out a 7-0 victory over a stubborn Regis eleven. DE's defense, sparked by big Bob Wetoska, Ray Oison, Bill McPherson and Felix Mannella, was outstanding, stopping everything Regis tried. Regis' defense was something to watch and talk about, too, allowing De La Salle a lone tally in the second quarter when Dave Lies scored on a double reverse from 30 yards out. Cretin De La Salle won its first conference game over Cretin, 48-0, with Larry Daly and Dave Lies sparking the offense. Cretin threatened early in the first period when they marched to De La Salle's 10-yard line. Here Dale Kaiser intercepted a pass to end the threat and Cretin's chance to tally. From here Daly and Lies took over and carried the ball back to Cretin's goal with Daly tallying for DE's first score. In the second quarter it was ties and Wetoska for DE scores. In the third. Lies and Daly made it five touchdowns for the Islanders and in the final canto. Lies and Kaiser brought the total to 48-0 for the DE-men. St. Cloud DE ran its victory skein to four when it defeated St. Cloud Cathedral, 19-0, in the Crusaders' Homecoming game. Both defenses were about evenly matched in the first half, with De La Salle having a shade better offense, managing to push over a score late in the second quarter. In the third quarter, DE scored another TD when Dave Lies scampered 35 yards to paydirt. Daly ran the extra point. And in the final quarter, Daly went over from St. Cloud's 12-yard line for the final score. Two of St. John's Prep players were killed and two others severely injured in St. Cloud's terrible tragedy following the DE-St. Cloud game, when a train hit an automobile containing the teenagers. This led to the cancellation of the De La Salle-St. John game and put the Islanders in a tie for the conference title. BOTTOM ROW: Donald Hackert, Patrick Giles, Mike Coloumbe, Henry Rampage. Freshmen Record Fine Season The freshmen coached by Bill Johnson proved to everyone that they were as good as other Park Board teams. Although lacking in weight, they had more than their share of courage. The South Side DE team ran up a record of four wins, two losses ond a tie for the 1954 season. The South Siders lost the title game to Ramsey in St. Thomas In their final game of the year, De La Salle pushed St. Thomas into the dirt at O'Shaughnessey Field, 61-0, in the largest score ever run up by either team in a series dating back to 1922. Daly scored 25 points to lead the Islanders. Mc-Inerny, who had been DE's after-touchdown point-artist, scored two TD's and kicked five conversions, for a total of 17 points. Dave Lies, hospitalized with injuries, was replaced by sophomore Dennis Loyer who scored DE's first points. Final high point of the game was Don Kasbohm's interception of a pass and his 92 yard return for a TD. Jack Getchman tallied DE's other TD. After a year's absence, the Central Catholic Conference title in football came back to the Island and De La Salle, who sported a 6-0 record for the short football season. DE's backfield was sparked by three the Park Board, 20-7, and as a result of injuries in this game dropped a non-conference tilt to Cretin. Coach Bill Johnson lists Mike Finnegan, Pat Delaney, Rog Albers os definite contenders for varsity positions. Leading linesmen are Fran Metzger, Bob Praus, ond John Derus whose father played for the varsity in 1930. of the best running backs in the Conference, Larry Daly and Dale Kaiser, seniors, and Dave Lies, junior. Daly, despite his size, ran off with scoring honors, picking up 12 touchdowns. Led by All-American Bob Wetoska and All-Stater Ray Olson, DE's line was every bit as good as the back-field. All in all, impartial observers rated the De La Salle 1954 football team as being as good as any in the state.-Coach Dick Reinhart gave it the nod as having been the best of 10 he'd coached at DE. Islanders Overflow Homecoming Dance; Game With St. John’s Is Cancelled Elizabeth Gindorff, '54 Homecoming Queen, with escort Ray Olson, smilingly beams acknowledgement of honor paid her by Class of 1955. Rock St. Jack's was the unused warrior-cry which prevailed over the Islanders as they tried to avoid the thought of a game-less Homecoming. Wearing their buttons bottoms-up, many disappointed De La Salle fans danced to the resounding strains of Hugh Cardenas' ten-piece band. The festive Homecoming Dance was held Friday, October 22, and the game was scheduled for Sunday, October 24. But because of the unfortunate car-train crash in St. Cloud where two St. John players were killed and two injured, the game was cancelled. Coach Dick Reinhart, with about five days notice, attempted to schedule another game to replace the traditional Homecoming Game but in vain. and the Islander fans found themselves moping on Sunday. A hand-made football field hovered above the heads of dancing DE fans. It was the greatest decorating idea DE has ever seen. Chairman Louis Turgeon used between seven and eight thousand feet of crepe paper. One side of the stadium was purple and gold; the other carried the visitors' colors, red and white. Two miniature goal posts protruded downwards from the beautiful, intricate field. Reigning over the Homecoming Festival was beautiful Queen Liz Gindorff and King Ray Olson, her haandsome escort. The Queen was crowned by Dale Kaiser, president of the Senior Department. The remaining five homeroom queen-candidates were Liz's gracious attendants. They were Polly Podany, Jackie Ewer, Muriel Stowed, Gloria Tures and Marilyn Winters. Elizabeth Gindorff, 1954 Homecoming Queen, and escort Ray Olson pose beneath statue of Most Blessed Virgin. Retreat master at South Side for Freshman Department was Father W. K. Hermes of St. Joan of Arc Parish. Two Paulists, Fathers James Corbett and Francis Keyes, were Island School retreat masters. During the day, talks on various aspects of morality in the student's daily life were given by the retreat priests. All boys attended Holy Mass and received Holy Communion in a body on the mornings of each doy of retreat. Seniors not making a closed retreat, attended the Island retreat with the Junior Class and heard Father Corbett's talks. If one con call a retreat a success by counting the number of Communions received, or by the number of confessions heard, then the students' retreats this year were more than successful. This eager philatelist, no doubt, is only trying to improve his standing in this year's edition of the De La Salle STAMP CLUB which holds its meetings every Tuesday afternoon in the Green Room with Brother Felix as moderator. By discussion, formal talks on their value, collectors increase their knowledge of the hobby of stamps. Many boys who have been interested in the functions of the school library hove enjoyed their membership in the LIBRARY CLUB. The boys who are members work for an hour and a half weekly at shelving books and magazines and in doing various types of work which must be done in an up-to-date reading sanctuary. The members meet once a month to discuss new books and to learn more of the part the library plays in the school community. Miss Evelyn Buckley, librarian, guides the group. At De La Salle we have a group of numismatists, as our dear friend Webster calls them. Those who are not too familiar with him simply call the boys coin collectors. The COIN CLUB conducts its activities under the guidance of Brother Quentin. At their monthly meetings the coin collectors discuss coins that each member has collected and investigate rare coins. This very fascinating hobby is really more than a hobby as can be witnessed by the vast store of knowledge coin collectors gather on historical events and historical personalities. CHESS CLUB at DE is made up of a number of quiet amusement lovers. The members meet about once a month and play chess. Many lively arguments develop, too, when discussing certain plays and moves. Purpose of the group is to enable those who like chess to meet others with the same interest. At various times they engage in interscholastic contests. Their victories are rather scarce because of inexperience, but they ore looking forward to future triumphs. Brother Gregory is moderator. Early in the year, when the Science Club was organized, application was made to the Science Clubs of America for affiliation. Within a short time the SCA accepted and forwarded a charter. Mr. A. W. Frank, the club's moderator, presented the charter to Richard Latshaw, the club's president, at a general meeting. Shortly afterwards, officers were elected and the specialized divisions of the club formed. Those chosen to lead this year's group are Richard Latshaw, president; William Blass, vice-president; James Demeules, secretary; and Michael Walsh, treasurer. Following the pattern set last year, four separate work groups were formed and chairmen of the groups chosen. These groups are chemistry, physics, radio and biology, headed by Latshaw and John Healey, Robert Conroy, Lewis Brown and Demeules, respectively. Each section takes charge of a different meeting. It gives a demonstration on any topic of its choice within its particular field. Meetings of this type give the mem- bers a chance to see chemistry, physics, biology and radio in their practical application. Members thereby gain greater knowledge and experience than are available in formal classroom arrangements. In addition to these demonstration meetings every two weeks, outside speakers are invited in to speak and give demonstrations in their particular fields. One of the outstanding men thus invited was Brother Gerard of the Physics Department of St. Mary's College, Winona, Minnesota. Once again the Science Club sponsored the Westing-house Science Talent Search on Dec. 23. Tests were given under the direction of Borther H. Matthew, one of the Science Club advisors, to James Demeules, John Healey,. James Hera and Bill Blass. Throughout the year the club is promoting interest in matters of science among its members. Already biological experiments with white rats have gained recognition of the University of Minnesota. Also among members there are complete weather stations, radio stations and many other scientific sets of equal merit. FIRST ROW: David Hawkint, Charles Coikran, William Blau, Mr. A. W. These together with the chairmen of the four divisions have all worked together to make the Science Club at DE the outstanding club at the school this year. It is the hope of all members that its record will be a goal for future clubs in the years to come. Special events held by the Patroness Society included a Style Show, a concert by the St. Mary's College Glee Club, the Father and Son Banquet, Mother and Son Communion Breakfast, the Purple and Gold Luncheon, a Cooking School, and a January Parents' Night at DE. They just seem so to the uninitiated. Pictures on this page are seemingly well officiated but then the players must have been aware of the photographer's presence. Throughout the year, other sports vie with basketball. Volleyball brings a welcome interlude and more homeroom heroes to the fray. And the touch football (variety, that is) could be rugged training even for the most hardened of the rugged. In fact, it has been said that Camp Le Jeune of World War II fame was a mere picnic compared to some of the battles waged on the DE campus in football time. Coach Bill Johnson hailed his team as looking good and handling the ball well. He anticipated a victorious season in the Park Board League. Other teams on the Frosh schedule were CCC Bee Squads and CYO church teams. Early prospectives of this year's squad indicated they had the ability of last season's group. Many of the present team won trophies at the DLS Grade School Tourney in '54. Pot Delaney and Harley McCullum held down the guard slots. This marked the second consecutive year that a Delaney had been in the starting role at guard. Pat is following in the foot-steps of brother Bill. Tom Conley and Bruce Evans won forward positions despite rugged competition. Six-foot-three John Derus and six-foot-one Bob Praus battled for the center spot. This rounded out the first stringers. Islander Champions Repeat Performance The 1954-55 Vorsity Basketboll team had a fine tradition to uphold. Their predecessors were the all-conquering state and conference champions. Led by Joe Dufort the team lost but once in some 20 gomes, breaking state records as they went along. However, the outlook wasn't dismal although stars like Dufort and Rich Rodney were hard to replace. On the 10-man State Tournament team there were 8 men who returned, including All-Stater Bob Kammerer. Dale Kaiser, Larry Daly and Jim Brey had also seen action as regulars too. Besides these, six-foot-five-inches of Tom Reinhart appeared to answer his father's dream of a tall center. Coach Dick Reinhart also counted on such men as Dave Thies, Charley Carraher, Tom Healey, Paul Lehman and Tom Jacobson. The team had experience, depth, shooting ability, height and defense. Captaining the Islanders was Bob Kammerer, 6' 1 , who played both forward and guard. Kammerer played grade school basketball at Ascension, where he was All-City. As a freshman at DE, he played B ball and in his sophomore year, he became a varsity regular. He made All-State last year, and All-Regional this season. Larry Daly, a 5' 7 regular guard, came to the Island from Boys' Home. After a year of Bee squad, he moved up to the A-team and started as a junior. He was an exceptional ball handler and was excellent at stalling. Tom Jacobson, at 5' 9 , is one of the fastest players on the varsity. He came to De La Salle from St. Stephen's. He made the team as a junior and, although not a starter, this is the second year that he has been in the top 10. He plays forward. From St. Peter's in Richfield where he made the All-City team, hails Dale Kaiser. As a sophomore, he made the varsity and became a regular guard in his junior year after recovering from a broken arm. He is an even 6 foot. Tom Reinhart came to DE as a senior, having no previous experience on organized teams. Tom, at 6' 5 , proved to be the finest center in the conference. He was named to the All-Regional team this year. Dave Thies, a 6' 3 senior forward, came from Ascension. He first made the team as a senior and is a top reserve. The junior members of the squad include Jim Brey, a regular, Charlie Carraher, Pat Conley, Jerry Fleet-ham, Jack Getchman, Tom Healey and Dick Yentsch. Having plowed enough water in three years to float a battleship, Stan has added his share of points in the 100 and 200 yard free-style. John Sewall for two years has been a welcome fill-in. His consistent support has helped the team much. Pete Giefer, who joined this year, has improved steadily in the breast-stroke. Freshman Paul Hile ond his sophomore brother, George, are very good in the freestyle sprints and should do much next year. Ross Noard in the breast-stroke and Tom Sweetzer in the long distance free-style are two sophomores the team will need much next year. A gathering of the Class of 1916 was discussing the success and failures of their lives from the time they had left the Island. This meeting eventually led to the foundation of the present Oe La Salle Alumni Association. The Association continued to grow until at present there are some 3,000 members with about 450 active in the affairs of the group. Main purpose of the organization is to assist the school in all ways possible, and to keep alive the friendships made while students at DE. Establishing scholarships, defraying decorating expenses and helping the Brothers financially are but a few of these helps. Annually the group has two major social activities, the banquet and the election-smoker. This year, the Alumni Association coordinates its events with those of the school under the guidance of Brother Kevin. THE GLENCOE CLUB The Glencoe Club is an organization composed of parents and relatives of, first, Christian Brothers who are from the Minneapolis area and, secondly. Rock boys who are now studying at the Christian Brothers Provincial Motherhouse in Glencoe, Missouri. Hence the name, Glencoe Club. These people are aware of the need of the Brothers and therefore have made their purpose twofold: 1) The club provides opportunities for social gatherings among groups of parents and relatives who have much in common. 2) It provides financial aid to the Brothers' Junior Novitiate in Glencoe and to the Scholasticate at St. Mary's College in Winona, Minnesota. To raise this money the club gives two profit making events each year: Card Party in the fall and a spring dance. The club presently has about 80 members who meet once a month under the modera-torship of Brother Felix. STANDING: Mr. N. D. Sarozen. Vice-President; Mr. Horry Smith, Prow-dent. SEATED: Mr . The Islander During the 1953-1954 school year at De La Salle, the staff of THE ISLANDER was, for the first time, aided slightly in their work by a small number of handpicked sophomores who proved themselves adaptable to the writing field. Co-editors Bill Blass and Mike Walsh mentored THE ISLANDER'S reign during this period with the guidance and support of Brother H. Gerard, production advisor. With the artistic work done by Jerry Goodge, the paper continued to produce the utmost in scholastic news field. The entire staff's work was rewarded by the National Scholastic Press Association which rated their pains with a position on the All-American selections, a position THE ISLANDER has held down through many of the previous years. Meanwhile, the potential staff members were concentrating upon gathering facts concerning the methods used in distorting the news. These 30-odd members of the Sophomore Journalism class were an experiment of Brother Gerard, whose point it was to produce a better-adapted staff for the '54-'55 publications. His experiment seems to have achieved its objectives, for when these members took over the job of editing THE ISLANDER in the fall of 1954, the initial publication appeared as if its staff had been accustomed to such work for months previous. Co-editors Ed Kocourek and Paul Meade led their cohorts in a superb job from the start. Again in '54, sophomore journalism was the order of the day. A number of these lads were given assignments for the regular issues of THE ISLANDER. Also, the Christmas season saw the publication of a pamphlet entitled The Christmas Star, which was entirely the work of the sophomore section. With this new method of furthering the teaching of journalism to sophomores, each year should find a capable staff waiting to take over the job of reporting the facts to the men on the Island. ,.„oU • feotur« PW«V P ftrooff' Set° Don tfCo 0 Junior Journalists TOP PICTURE -(SEATED): Williom Wollenfiny, James Barrett, Eugene Norling, Roger Nickolson, Duane Narog, Ronald McNicoll. Boasting five three-year veterans, the Debate Club naturally had a successful season. The team, coached by Mr. Bernard Szymczak, once a competitive speaker himself, debated successfully against Central, Patrick Henry, and St. Agnes High School. It also took part in three tournaments at St. Cloud, Duluth and St. Mary's College, Winona. For the first time, this year's speakers are members of the National Forensic League. In meets sponsored by this organization, Robert DuBois added laurels to his brow by copping top place as best speaker at the Student Congress held at Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis. These men had served as DE's first team since their sophomore year. Besides competitive debating, the groups—debaters and general speech—appeared before the Patroness Society and the Freshmen Class at South Side. 84 Blessed Benildus Club Sets Religious Pace The Benildus Club is composed of those seniors who, realizing the need for vocations to the priesthood or the religious life, have decided to say extra prayers and make a few sacrifices for that objective. Members' obligations would be to 1) Say the fourth decade of the rosary in the chapel at noontime. 2) Say extra prayers and make individual simple sacrifices. 3) Attend meetings of the organization. 4) Carry out any other duties assigned to him. This year there are more than 86 senior active members. A few years ago, it was decided by the club's personnel that the lower classmen should be able to take part in this prayerful project. Members thus include Associate Members in the junior, sophomore and freshman classes. Their duties comprise the first two of the active members. There are no dues in the Benildus Club. De La Salle Band Has Active Year De La Salle's Band, under the direction of Mr. Wallace Peterson has, for the '54-'55 school year, been responsible for many musical triumphs. History of the DE band is remarkable for several reasons. First of these is that this group dates back almost as far as does the school. In 1942, Brothers Alphonsus and Gilbert stabilized and standardized the old band into the modern musical organization it is today. A year later, in 1943, Mr. Peterson joined the staff as part-time director aiding Brother Alphonsus. Six years later in 1949, Mr. Peterson became the director, instructor and conductor of the De La Salle Band. Recent developments in the organization include the dropping of band as an accredited course in the school curriculum. Also dropped was its old military ranking system. Activities that the band took part in this year included the Christmas program, ploying at both football and basketball games including the championship tourneys and the Spring Concert in conjunction with the Glee Club.
