Centuries ago their founder, St. John Baptist De La Salle, made faith the shining virtue of their order and gave them me star as its symbol. ln prayer we ask St. La Salle to intercede for these who follow his glorious life, to grant that they may be worthy of the challenge given to them. We ask that they be given courage to accomplish their mission on earth, that of enlightening those whom they teach. May the star which guides them give unto us the light and grace to further in our lives the service of our God, our Community and our state and nation. K sta! ,J P E . l M are ' 5 v 5 , n v . s a s My Dear Graduates, This is your day, the one you looked forward to when you entered De La Salle four years ago. My sincere congratulations to you on your completion of a very important phase in your education. There are others who are due for felicitations on this occasion and to whom great credit is due. They are your parents, who, realizing the importance of a sound moral training, made at times great sacrifices to keep you in a private school. In sending you to De La Salle, they sought to give you the best training possible. They placed you in the care of men dedicated to the work of Catholic Education. You have received the best in spiritual, intellectual, social and physical development. The future belongs to you. Your success on the college level and in a very competi- tive world depends on how well you have accepted this training and likewise on the will you have to build a solid structure on this foundation. Your success is the only thanks your parents and teachers look for. May Our Lord and His Blessed Mother bless you and guide you through the rock strewn channels of life. This is my wish to you, the De La Salle Grad of 1955. Brother A. John, Brother A. That we will be able to meet this challenge successfully de- pends upon how much of the light from the Star of Faith we receive during our days here at De La Salle. We must place our confidence in our teachers who are charting a course through the skyways that will lead us to God. It remains in these one, two or three years ahead at our school to make the most of each precious moment, to learn our lessons well, to accept our responsibilities, so that we too may climb, may reach the heights in a manner befitting Catholic dignity. For these three days classes are suspended and we give our time wholly to the worship of God and the care of our souls. This past November, Reverend Father Fidelis Benedic of the Passionist Order conducted the retreat. We will never forget the dynamic, forceful retreat sermons Father preached to us. His practical instructions in Christian living were a help to many who during the past year had perhaps slipped a little in the conduct of their daily lives. That the retreat was a spiritual success was evidenced by the long lines of students approaching the altar rail to receive Our Lord on the final day. 67- ja fker ana! Son ommunion ag On Sunday, March 6, 1955, the students of De La Salle and their dads received Communion as a group at St. Bonaventure Monestary Church. In this way they demonstrated their faith in the Eucharistic Presence of Our Blessed Lord and their willingness to share with one another the intimate delights of His Divine Heart. The monestary church was filled to capacity and the sight of so many fathers leading their teen- age sons to the altar of God was indeed edifying. The 'tPilot here presents scenes of this Father and Son Communion and the brealdast that followed it. Composed of fathers of De La Salle Students, the organization endeavors to give dads a better understanding of their son's problems and to bring both sons and dads into closer relations with the teachers. For this purpose monthly meetings are held at which fathers have an opportunity to hear various authorities discuss the problems of youth in general and to speak with teachers about the problems of their sons in particular. The Fathers' Club has also been most generous in helping improve the school plant. The recent remodeling of the cafeteria, the lights on the football field, the new equipment in the physics lab, the new I.B.M. Clock System and the new lights in the library are all their projects. Right now the Dads' Club is raising funds to buy two badly needed school buses. Not only individually but as a group, the students of De La Salle owe a lot to their fathers. Himself a graduate of Saint .Toseph's High School in 1892, Mr. Bodde's faith, foresight and interest in the boys of the city of Detroit prompted him to gather around him a group of other good men to build another school for the Christian Brothers and their students. He became the first President of the Board of Trustees, sparked the drive that made our Alma Mater a realityg and zealously and ably guided the school through its infancy. In recognition of his charity and piety he was affiliated to the Order of the Christian Brothers. These external features only served to set forth the very timely and interesting news articles, editorials and guidance bulletins contained therein. From its pages we learned of the latest administrative policies, of the accomplish- ments of our athletic teams, of the doings of our Fathers' Club, Alumni Society and the other varied groups in our unity of purpose into all the various activities of our school. After seeing each issue we gained a greater sense of pride in our school and all that it was ac- complishing, religiously, scholastically, socially, and athletically for our benefit. With the November issue, The De La Salle Alumni News merged with The Co-Pilot. This merger gave our alumni a chance to learn what we were doing back at De La Salle and us a chance to learn how they were doing in the world beyond. The merger was beneficial to all of us. Congratulations to the staff who worked so hard to school. make this paper grow so much during the past year. The Co-Pilot has become a great force for bringing 360 Calidf Siu!! The book which you now hold in your hands is largely the result of the labor of the men pictured on this page. We have tried to present a yearbook that is a worthy product of our school and one which will be a storehouse of memories for you in the years to come. Whether or not we have succeeded you can now judge. Among the boys who worked on the yearbook, special notes of thanks are due to Declan Haun for much of the photography and to Vincent Weldon for much of the art contained in this book. Pat Robison and Tony Loccrichio worked on the layouts for the sport section. Bill Grief, Bob Mayer and Ron Linsley spent many hours working on the senior and underclassmen pages. The faculty and activities pages are largely the work of AlbertSchaller and Roger Schoenherr respectively. Many of the write ups in this year's Pilot came from the pens of Co-editors Jerry Nowaczewski and Bill Kubicz. The dedication page and the division pages are the work of Richard Dickman and Leroy Rebar. Bill Kubicz, Ron Linsley, and Ray Kurzeniec helped organize the sponsor section. Last but not least we owe a debt of gratitude to Bill Wilk and his very hard working business staff, Ray Kurzeniec, Frank Cannestra, Don Sabbe and Bill Drum- mond. Without their efforts we would not havea yearbook today. This victory came to us only insofar as we had faith in the teachings of our coaches and had learned to cooperate with the helps they had given us. So also in the game of life, victory will come to us only insofar as we have supernatural faith in God's teachings and learn to cooperate with His graces. He must be the coach of our team if we are to achieve victory in the game of life. Viewing all things then in the light of the star of faith , we will be prepared to meet with life's future problems, confident that with God's help and our cooperation the victory will be ours. Vander Meulen, tackleg WATCH THE END! Coach Joel Mason, assisted by Jerry Boroski give sideline aid. This year, as in the past, our football team under the capable direction of Coaches Tom Bonino and Joel Mason turned in avery fine record. We started off unusually well by scoring 122 points while leaving our opponents scoreless. Among these our proudest victory was against St. .Toe's whom we licked 32-0, thus regaining the traditional oil can. In spite of the fact that we held our opponents scoreless in five consecutive games, our Soup Bowl dreams crashed when we fell victims to St. Anthony's powerhouse. The very last game of the season earned for us the Tyska Trophy when we beat St. Ladislaus 38-6. All in all it was a season that will long be remembered by the Pilots ol De La Salle. They will always remember the terrible mud and rain that more often met them as they came onto the field, the exaltation that victory over St. Joels brought, the sadness that came with the sudden death of Norm Schmidt, the bitter disappointment of the loss to St. Anthony's. It was a season that commanded great sacrifices from all and yet gave little material comfort to any. Because the sacrifices were there, the student body can be justly proud of their very fine team and its coaches. UMPHH! A St. Ladislaus player goes down reluc- tantly. - 89 - G. Mayer, end, P. Tom Iakuc and Bernie Shimkus steal ball from unsuspecting foe. BASKETBALL 1955 During 1955 the Pilot Cagers carried away the East Side Catholic Basketball Champion- ship with eleven wins and one loss. The one loss was against St. .Toe's, our old rival, who beat us in the last second of play by one point. However, we did not fare so well in the playoffs for the city championship at Univer- sity of Detroit Stadium on Feb. 20. Shrine High School, the Catholic West Side Champs, beat us by two points in this crucial game to capture the City Catholic School Champion- ship. The overall La Salle Spirit showed itself throughout the entire season as the Pilots' teamwork on the court lead them to victory aiter victory. Co-Captains Chuck Lucas and Pat Tignanelli combined their talents to pull many a game out of the fire. Bernie Shimkus, Sam DiMercurio and Ken Coakleyhandled the ball with cunning accuracy and controlled the backboards with remarkable agility in every game. Coach Tom Bonino, who for the past three years has lead two out of three Pilot teams to Court Championships, has every right to feel proud of this year's East Side Champions. -94 GET IT, DOUG! Fourth Ufford. 4,2,...A,., Every Friday afternoon from October to April, fifty boys from our school gathered together at the Romona Recreation Center to enjoy one of the most wholesome and popular sports in America today, bowling. For many of us, this was the first season we had ever bowled. During the first weeks, we thought we would never be able to keep the ball out of the gutter and aim it straight down the alley into the t'pocket . However, gradually we overcame the awkwardness of novices and began to acquire that smoothness of approach and follow-through that is the mark of an experienced bowler. We had arrived. TEAM 1.
