How old were you when you stopped believing in Santa Claus?. Seven, eight or maybe nine? It's Kind of a shock when you find out. The average age is about eight, and most eight year olds can read fairly well. When a child is just learning to read, read anything in sight. Imagine how a sign reading Store Santas Needed is going to affect a child whose hero is Santa Claus. Of course, not all kids are going to understand these signs. They'll say. “Look ma. Santa!” and take it as a gram of salt. But one smart kid is all it takes, if one child knows there is no Santa you can bet all the kids on the block will know in a week. Then there will be a lot of hurt feelings and sad seven year olds running around town. PREMATURE SANTAS Have you ever looked around on Thanksgiving Day and all that was in sight was...Christmas trees, lights and other Christmas decorations? Christmas advertising really does begin too early. In the beginning of November, they start show- ing T.V. commercials of products that would be a great idea for Christmas.” T.V. Christmas specials arc programmed for the beginning of December. By Christmas Eve all the same old boring programs are on. and there aren't any Christmas shows left. Not only does advertising start too early, but everything has gone to commercial. For example, the day after Thanksgiving. Santa and his helpers are in Mervyn's taking pictures of children on the jolly man’s lap. while he should be home helping the elves load up the sleigh. The spirit of gift giving is left with a few people but it is not so strong. A lot of people give gifts because they feel obliged instead of telling someone they care about them. Come on. everybody! Let's not get too commer- cial and we better not start advertising too early or we won't be able to tell when and what Christmas really is! Shellev 8rown Rebuttal: Drama Review Criticized Santa is a small but important part of these children's lives. He’s a once a year thing: but oh during that time!
