THE YEAR OF THE DRAGON • • • The Dragon has long been DeWitt’s mascot. To understand why it was chosen to represent DeWitt, the yearbook staff did some research on it. In China the dragon represents power, wisdom, and well-being. It was chosen as DeWitt’s mascot because it is warlike and strong as well. Because it is the national symbol of China and appeared on the badge of the imperial j family, it represents royalty. It is appropriate, then, that the dragon stands for DeWitt, a town of people royal in spirit, if not in heritage. Where else are people so willing to stand up and help their neighbors in need? This year the people of DeWitt have joined in a common goal of raising enough money to help Lincoln Phillips get a liver transplant. They have donated their time, money,, and concern to help needy families at Christmas and other times. When a family’s house burned, they were there to help put back the pieces. They have also given their time and care for the sick. These kind acts show that the people of DeWitt certainly embody the strength and power of the Dragon. Since this is the Year of the Dragon in China, the DRAGON yearbook staff, in an effort to awaken the spirit of the dragon in even more people, proclaims the 1987-88 school year as the “Year of the Dragon” in DeWitt as well.

1988 was a year of fun and excitement for DHS students and faculty. Many things hap- pened during the school term. There were major events: winning football games, Beta Club Activity Week, the pow- der puff game, and Home- coming. There were small events — a shared friendship, an enjoyable day in English, a joke told by Mr. Whitcomb. All these things will be re- membered by the student body. The job of the yearbook staff was to capture these mo- ments so that others can share the year with us all. 1988 was THE YEAR - the year of the DRAGON, the year of FUN, and the year of EXCITEMENT. 1. Coach Ken Newsom retired this year. The teachers gave him a reception on his last day. MMM ... with food like this I should retire more often!” 2. These students at DMS pose for the yearbook photographer. She’s behind you, fellas!” 3. Shannon Fischer broke the grade curve on an English test. Her classmates did not appreciate that. “Look out, Alcatraz, here she comes.” 4. Jean, Steven, Paul, and Jamie get caught going to lunch. Better hurry, Guys. The line might shut down!” 5. Middle School Wildlife at the Wildlife Festival in St. Charles. 6. These are the twins in the senior class — Deane and Jeane, Marlene and Arlene, Jackie and Jamie. 7. Superintendent Tom Cox checks out the halls at DHS. 8. These Dragons stand on the sidelines at Lake Village. “Life seems a little blurry at times.” 9. Deane McEuen participates in Beta Club Activity Week. 10. The class of 1988 decorates for the Jr-Sr Banquet. 11. Lunch is definitely an event at DHS, and Donald Brown knows how to enjoy it. “Don’t bother me — I’m eating!!” 4
