DeTOitt, ‘Vo£. 29 DeT itt THE YEAR OF THE DRAGON • • • The Dragon has long been DeWitt’s mascot. To understand why it was chosen to represent DeWitt, the yearbook staff did some research on it. In China the dragon represents power, wisdom, and well-being. It was chosen as DeWitt’s mascot because it is warlike and strong as well. Because it is the national symbol of China and appeared on the badge of the imperial j family, it represents royalty. It is appropriate, then, that the dragon stands for DeWitt, a town of people royal in spirit, if not in heritage. Where else are people so willing to stand up and help their neighbors in need? This year the people of DeWitt have joined in a common goal of raising enough money to help Lincoln Phillips get a liver transplant. They have donated their time, money,, and concern to help needy families at Christmas and other times. When a family’s house burned, they were there to help put back the pieces. They have also given their time and care for the sick. These kind acts show that the people of DeWitt certainly embody the strength and power of the Dragon. Since this is the Year of the Dragon in China, the DRAGON yearbook staff, in an effort to awaken the spirit of the dragon in even more people, proclaims the 1987-88 school year as the “Year of the Dragon” in DeWitt as well. W 1. Seniors showing spirit!! 2. Look what happens when you think no one is looking at you, DeWayne. 3. The class of ’88 poses for the senior group picture. 4. Middle School chows down. 5. Shell Wilboum, Becca Favor ... Smiling and showing their DRAGON SPIRIT!!! 1988 was a year of fun and excitement for DHS students and faculty. Many things hap- pened during the school term. There were major events: winning football games, Beta Club Activity Week, the pow- der puff game, and Home- coming. There were small events — a shared friendship, an enjoyable day in English, a joke told by Mr. Whitcomb. All these things will be re- membered by the student body. The job of the yearbook staff was to capture these mo- ments so that others can share the year with us all. 1988 was THE YEAR - the year of the DRAGON, the year of FUN, and the year of EXCITEMENT. 1. Coach Ken Newsom retired this year. The teachers gave him a reception on his last day. MMM ... with food like this I should retire more often!” 2. These students at DMS pose for the yearbook photographer. She’s behind you, fellas!” 3. Shannon Fischer broke the grade curve on an English test. Her classmates did not appreciate that. “Look out, Alcatraz, here she comes.” 4. Jean, Steven, Paul, and Jamie get caught going to lunch. Better hurry, Guys. The line might shut down!” 5. Middle School Wildlife at the Wildlife Festival in St. Charles. 6. These are the twins in the senior class — Deane and Jeane, Marlene and Arlene, Jackie and Jamie. 7. Superintendent Tom Cox checks out the halls at DHS. 8. These Dragons stand on the sidelines at Lake Village. “Life seems a little blurry at times.” 9. Deane McEuen participates in Beta Club Activity Week. 10. The class of 1988 decorates for the Jr-Sr Banquet. 11. Lunch is definitely an event at DHS, and Donald Brown knows how to enjoy it. “Don’t bother me — I’m eating!!” 4 ... GOES ON John Ellenburg: It’s supposed to go in John not out. Dougie Sue and Randina on their way to “The Ball” Marcy Marceau: Look baby, I’m just too fine!!! Honey, Sexy Sue, Shannon, and Hot ‘Lips’ Hord pose in pride after plac- ing in the “I Can’t Believe We’re Do- ing This” pageant. 6 Jeff Johnston making a Hertz Rent- a-car commercial. Dragon Daze ... The students at DeWitt High are “characters” as you can see. Unexpected things may happen at any time: any- thing from guys dressing up as women to Miss Liberty, herself, posing for her lo- cal appearance in DeWitt. When walking down the halls of D.H.S., keep an open mind because ... anything can happen during Dragon “Daze.” Band members on a trip to Dallas last spring. Julie seems to be quite aware of her peers around her. DeWitt Middle School, tearing at the ta- bles!!! 8 Recently the DHS Band took a trip to Dallas, Texas for a na- tional contest. There the Drag- on Band received a gold metal in their division, which is the highest rating awarded. This shows that the strength of the dragon lives not only in the athletes of DeWitt, but also in the Dragon Wild Band!! The Dragon WILD Band Even Dragons need time off from the serious business of ed- ucation. The Jr.-Sr. Banquet gave them a chance to relax at the roulette wheel. Mrs. Cun- ningham was the big winner when the juniors pooled their winnings to “buy” her Warriner, the dog. Jr. and Sr. Banquet ’87 n The theme of the 1987 Junior-Senior Banquet was Las Vegas. The fun began on Friday night when the juniors stayed at the school half the night decorating. It was worth it, though, because the setting included a real-life cassino complete with a roulette wheel, a blackjack table, and “play” money that could be used to buy stuffed animals. The waiters and waitresses for the evening were the sophomore servers who escorted the guests to their tables to watch the show — a Las Vegas show case of dancing and singing. 12 MISS ARKANSAS COUNTY MISS DEWITT The Miss Arkansas County Pageant celebrated its 50th year. Jana Cunningham was named first runner-up. This was also the first year for the Miss DeWitt Pageant. Shannon Fischer was crowned Miss DeWitt, Jana Cunningham was named first run- ner-up, Carrie Gardener second runner-up, and Melody Hurdle was named third runner-up. 13 Miss Arkansas County Celebrates Its 50th Year! I hope Mr. Prothro doesn’t see this! I don’t look for trouble! Some of us got it! 14 Mirror, Mirror, in my hand ... Her mouth has a mind of its own! Get in step, guys! Don’t drop it, Brandi. Why am I doing this? Now where did they go? The students at DHS love to partic- ipate in the parades. There were a num- ber of students involved in both the Ar- kansas County Parade and the Wildlife Festival Parade. As the people pictured will probably tell you, things are going to be happening. 1988 is the year of eve- rything. Our firefighters have sexy legs! Ain’t I sweet? 76e 'tyean, t6e Pcvuute 15 SENIORS ’88 Dragon Friends Till the End Well, Seniors, May 1988 is upon us, and it won’t be long until we go our separate ways. It will be hard to leave, but there is one thing that we will never forget — the friends that we have made along the way. When graduation comes and we take that walk to get our diplomas, just remember all the good times we’ve had — “gambling” on Las Vegas, “graduating” from American history, “fording” the lake in the parking lot when it rained, “grazing” at the salad bar, watching our “stars” glimmer during Starfind, and going around in “circles” on the square. As we journey into our futures, we’ll all make friends, but the memories we share will stay with us forever. above: Go Team! Karri takes a break. 17 HOMECOMING Homecoming week began as everyone “flocked” through the halls dressed in camouflage. The excitement continued as the week followed with twinkie day, cool shades day, blue-white day, and dress-up day. All through the week various clubs worked non-stop to complete their mini- floats for the traditional homecoming parade. On the morning of October 23, the sophomore float won first place in the mini-parade, seniors won second place, and FTA won third place. Becky Simpson was escorted by Phil Simpson. Becky, the daughter of Russell Simpson and Nancy Lane, is Senior Class Secretary, Beta Club Treasurer, GCE President, and a member of Student Council. Phil, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilford Simpson, played offensive guard and defensive tackle. He is Senior Class Treasurer and is also a member of the French Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. 18 UP, UP, AND AWAY 1987 Following the parade, seniors were awarded the spirit stick. At 2:30 p.m. that afternoon Master and Mistress of Ceremonies, Steven Inman and Christi Estes, announced that the 1987 Homecoming Queen was Becky Simpson. Coach Davis crowned Jana Cunningham Maid of Honor. That night everyone’s hopes and dreams soared Up, Up and Away when the Dragons defeated Star City. What a wonderful way to end a wonderful week! Jana Cunningham was escorted by Chip Spears. Jana, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Cunningham, is a Sr. High Varsity Cheerleader, a member of the French Club, Beta Club, FTA, Student Council, Annual Staff, and a Girls’ State Delegate. Chip, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mack Spears, played tailback and defensive halfback. He is Recording Secretary for Student Council, GCE Vice President, State Sergeant at Arms for GCE, and a member of the French Club. This atmosphere of friendliness makes a person feel welcome in the school and community. There is also a very positive attitude of respect for the school’s programs and staff. Friend- liness, respect, and courtesy promote an excellent atmosphere for good things to happen. It is my opinion that it is imperative the school and community cooperatively pursue the educational objectives that are in the best interest of the students. I expect the best for the students, patrons, and staff in the DeWitt Public Schools. I feel that all of us will work hard to promote good education in DeWitt. Those aspects of our lives that we prize most are earned by hard work, diligence, and honest effort, and I feel that all of these qualities can be found where a good school and community exist. (Headquarters) I think DeWitt Schools are dynamite! We offer you a high-powered education so you can be the success you were meant to be. We make an effort to offer our students the best high school education possible. DeWitt School District is parents, students, teachers, administrations, and patrons working together for the purpose of providing an education for the students of the DeWitt Community. I am proud to be a part of this team. 26 Ass’t. Superintendent Carvil Trammel Left to Right: Carl Raabe, Don West, Eddie Lumsden, Tom Cox — Superintendent, Terry Turner, Homer Norton, and Kenneth Fischer. The 1987-88 DeWitt School Board is a representative body that acts as the school legislature and jury. The school board meets on the first Tuesday of every month to discuss the policies of our school district. As the final authority on all school matters, its members work hard to maintain quality in our school. 27 DeWitt High School Principal Tom Davis DeWitt High School Dean of Students Jim Binam F A C U L T Y 29 Language Arts Susan Luebke English IV Journalism Joan Bullock English I, and III Phyllis West 7th grade English Diann Cunningham G T, English III, Journalism Scarlett Crafford French I, II, and III Johnny Leibrock English II Speech Pam Carver 8th grade English Shelia Byers 6th grade English Carole Wallace Reading SCIENCE FACULTY Deborah Phillips Biology Advanced Biology Luanne Lewis 7th Grade Science Sterling Love Earth Science Joe Durley 8th Grade Science Gerald Whitcomb Chemistry Physics Computer Science Carolyn McCoy 6th Grade Science 31 Popcorn anyone? Congratulations, Chris It seems like only yesterday Love, Mom, Dad, Debbie, Roger, Robert, Debra, Angie, Tim, Tommy, Jylynn, and Bill The road was not a smooth one, But you never walked alone, And now the time has come To try to make it on your own. Always remember this one thing: No matter what you do, We are always here Because we’re so proud of you. Congratulations, Love, Barbara Mama Judy Tina Teresa William and Family ' I Congratulations! You Finally Made It! We Love You, Mom, Melissa, Adam, Kim and Chris. Love has brought us together, Life will pull us apart. But I want to tell you all, You will never leave my heart. We are all God’s children, we’ve together found His love. Just wait my friends, we’ll be together again, with God in His heaven above. I love you all, don’t ever forget it! Love, Karri a «lift from God 168 Brought into this world by two parents with love. They said I was a gift from heaven above. Though I think the gifted was really me. To have them both as parents to be. They gave me life and love that is real. So real that only I could feel, How much they cared and sheltered me so, And never thought they’d see me go. But now the time has come for us to part, But I promise Momma and Daddy, “You’ll never leave my heart.” The love so strong that you’ve given so much, Can always be felt in your touch. You both taught me as the older I’ve grown, That as long as there’s you, I’d never be alone. There’s one thing left to say, to do. “Have I told you lately that I love you?!” We love you too, Babe, and congratulations; you’ve made it! Love, Daddy, Momma, Robin, Kevin, Piper, Fuzbucket, D-o-g, Beau, and Jezzi. Congratulations, Bradley Love, Mom and Dad We’re proud of you! What people see of me is very nice, But it only hints at the mysteries folded inside. As I grow and mature my petals begin to reveal themselves. I can study and learn, I can take responsibility. Box 152 DeWitt, AR 72042 CORMIER RICE MILLING CO..INC. Have a Rice Day! CONGRATULATIONS, SENIORS! From First United Methodist Church When we needed a “new song” for our lives, you humm«M |tme and allowed us to create the words. You accepted us for what we were. You never pushed us or lead us in the wrori§airecti6n. But when we tripped and skinned our knees, you were right there to pick us up and apply first aid. You kissed our wounds and madte them heal. And you know, we were a little clumsy. But, you never complained. You were just always there. When the sun was setting on our days too early, you smiled and gave us the extra light that we needed. We feel like we need to repay you for everything you have ghp'tt tKl we tell you this. But you just say that our friendship and our love are all you want. But the time that we have left to give you our love and friendship is nearly gone. Soon yo will not be right there to help us when we mess up, or to smile and just be a friend. We want to make you hear us tell you how much you mean to us. Then, we can’t find the words. You just tell us that we don’t need words. You understand. Four your love, understanding, and help, we say, “Thank you.” Our parents — for without you we would not have a life. Our teachers — for you gave us what we are made of. Mr. Relyea and Mr. DeVore — for all the great picture . Mrs. Vernor and Mrs. Mannis — for identifying pictures and running off yearbook copies. Mrs.. Holloway — for typewriters and copying papers. Teachers and Staff — for letting us interupt your schedules to get pictures. Shannon Fischer and DeWayne Copeland Co-Editors •Jr -JHB
