Text from Pages 1 - 232 of the 1987 volume:

there is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. it is a dimension that is as vast as space and is as timeless as infinity, it is the middle ground between light and shadow — between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears and the sum- mit of his knowledge, this is the dimension of im- agination, it is an area which.. . i Live wires can be deadly!!! Guess who?! Take my picture and you die! 2 Raise your hand if you’re sure. Down the hall, take a right... the dragon zone! To be or not to be... Aren’t we cute?! It’s a party! Life often seems like a shooting star; it flies by swiftly and all too soon fades! And even though the memories flicker, the yearbook staff has captured the extraordinary moments that occurred in 1986-87. As in the Twilight Zone the intentional often seems accidental ... so beware as you enter our Dragon Zone! 4 It’s stuck!! I’m so excited!! Be a pepper! What would I do without all this attention? ??? Implementing new stand- ards and finding money during an economically depressed year are just a couple of the problems that find their way to his desk. Through it all he has maintained an optimistic outlook in his work. His is not an easy job, but the rewards are worth it. ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT CARVIL TRAMMELL Mr. Trammell has been serving as Assistant Superin- tendent for six years. He feels it is a privilege to work in the DeWitt School System. “It is exciting to be in education when so many new programs are being introduced. I enjoy my job.” 24 Left to Right: Carl Raabe, Terry Turner, Don West, Eddie Lumsden, Nelson Oakley, Homer Horton. The DeWitt School Board is a legislative and judicial body which meets on the first Tuesday of every month to discuss the policies of our school district. It is the final authority on all school matters and works hard to maintain quality in our schools. 25 The policy-making board at work. DeWitt High School Dean of Students Jim Binam Mr. Binam liked his first year as dean of students and reflects upon DHS as “a good school with well-behaved students who are definitely learning.” DeWitt High School Principal, Tom Davis Mr. Davis enjoyed his third year as principal. He gets the most enjoyment from contributing to the education of young people and from working with the good faculty. DeWitt Middle School Principal, Jim Emerson Mr. Emerson has referred to our school system as being good. In his tenth year as Middle School principal, he is a true asset. 26 beyond that which is known to man Susan Luebke English IV Journalism Johnny Leibrock English I and II, Speech Scarlett Crafford French I and II language arts Phyllis West 7th Grade English Pam Carver 8th Grade English Carole Wallace Reading Diann Cunningham G T, English III, Journalism Joan Bullock English I and II Shelia Byers 6th Grade English Science Faculty Gerald Whitcomb Chemistry Geometry Physics Computer Science Sterling Love Earth Science Deborah Phillips Biology and Advanced Biology Joe Durley Luanne Lewis Carolyn McCoy 8th Grade Science 7th Grade Science 6th Grade Science 29 Hazel Young Eighth Grade Math Barbara Nelson Math I Algebra II Advanced Math Joe Shackelford Basic Math II General Math III Intro. Words are so futile to speak of love, to heal hurts so pointless and unintended. Perhaps life’s greatest pain and longing is the loneliness of missing friends I cannot call to my side. Curse time and distance and all the banalities of life that tear us apart. I didn’t know when I left home I would leave friends I loved. Time was so omnipresent, We had every day, every moment, forever. I wish as I watch the disappearing sun that I could gather together all those I love and all that love me, And remain in one house, one town, one union. No one left out, no one unavailable, no one whose voice and words and smile could not be at my beck and call. I miss you all so much, and love you all so profoundly, And refuse to understand a world and destiny that keeps us apart. But I am grateful for the friends that life has permitted to remain, Grateful for the memories, the reunions that lie ahead, The laughs and tears and stories that cannot be told enough, Grateful that the sun lingers over the ocean a little longer tonight. 42 O k O •A1 ViI cJ Y1 ' V f ?; V V A ' u U 5: y „3 0 s vy rH.p- b --p -0 CL , v tj j' v X , V) f-- £. §? These are just a few of the “prize possessions” everyone had to give up on that first day of school. For the Seniors though, it was pretty exciting because, after all, this is their last year at DHS, and even though it didn’t show the first day was probably one of the most exciting one’s of their entire lives. All in all, the Seniors of ’87 have made this whole year one of the most memorable ones they will ever have. From winning everything at the Homecoming pep assembly to rolling “certain teachers” desks with toilet paper has made this year very exciting and FUN and the memories will be cherished in their hearts for many years to come and they are sure they won’t be forgotten for a long, long, time. 56 and is as timeless as infinity 57 President LaSandra Butler, 1st Vice President Troy Kestner, 2nd Vice President Steven Inman, Secretary Christi Estes, Treasurer Todd McCallie, Reporter Dana Hargrove. s o p H o M 0 R E C L A S S 0 F F I C E R 8 s 3 3 y 1 S 0 1 s lAl y V 0 0 1 H A 0 d V 0 3 S pp°X 'uos -japuapi ‘sa sg psuqQ ‘ueuiui uaAa g CO lO Phil Young Lagina Young Ross Yarbrough Greg Wright Skip Webb Travis West April West Michael Watkins Tricia Walton Jay Vittitow Guy Travis Stan Staton Adrian Snyder Rickey Sneed Robin Smith Dean Smith Danny Smith 59 Lanny Sheperd Lee Scroggins Jerry Roundsaville Keri Roberts Jason Rieves Gayla Rhodes Raeann Refeld Dan Purdy Alex Pike Scott Pettit Melissa Pendley William Peebles Angie Peebles Kelly Padgett Todd Owens Tiffani Owens Ronnie Owens J. Such is the plight of the weary traveler, the lonely wanderer, journeying endlessly along the back roads of the Dragon Zone ... (DeWayne Copeland). We hope this yearbook will bring back many memories, strange and special, of your travel here. Several people have helped make the 1986-87 Dragon Zone a success: Mary Vernor who helped us find those lost in the Dragon Zone (Identified pictures); Mr. Ralph Relyea, who very kindly took the pictures that captured special moments; Mrs. Cun- ningham, who helped us survive the journey through the Dragon Zone; the Hi-Times staff which let us borrow their camera after ours took a nose dive onto the floor of the Dragon Zone; and especially the Dragon staff for all their hard work and cooperation. Remember: if you find any mistakes in the yearbook, it’s okay. They are part of tha place where mistakes are a reality of life ... in the Dragon Zone. Editors (1986-87) Wendy Shaiffer and Wade Parker
