To help relieve some of the suspense, the cheer- leaders organized a Homecoming Week. The week included jersey day, hat and sunglasses day. dress-up day. mourning day. and blue and gold day. On jersey day the football players were very popular. People were still calling at midnight Sunday trying to borrow one of their jerseys to wear on Monday. Who would have believed that on hat and sunglasses day there would so many cool dudes and chicks at D.H.S.? The participa- tion from the student body became even greater as the week progressed! Previously, he and his family resided in Star City where he was superintendent for seven years. He has a BSE which he attained from the Univer- sity of Arkansas at Monticello. He also has a Med and an Ed Sp. both attained at the University of Arkansas. Mr. Jordon's job is to organize our education so that each student will receive the best possible education. He knows his occupation well and his experi- ence is a great asset. Anyone can see that, for at DHS it is possible to branch out into many fields that hold possible interest. SufiEZLnt ncl nt The Jordons always find time out of their busy schedules to attend the Jr.-Sr. Banquet. Paper work always keeps Mr. Jordon busy. Besides being the superintendent, Mr. Jordon is also a family man. His wife, Patsy, is the DMS librarian. They have two daughters. Melodie and Leslie. Mel- odie is a student at ASU and Leslie is a DHS freshman. 28 c f±±Litant ufisziniEnd nt Mr. Leon Miles is the assistant superintendent of the schools. This is his third year in that field. He, like Mr. Jordon, attended Monticello for his BSE. However, for his Med, Mr. Miles attended UCA and for his Ed Sp attended the University of Arkansas. Above: Mr. Miles looks up from his paper work for a picture. Left: Mr. Jordon and Mr. Miles work well together. Besides working along side of Mr. Jordon. Mr. Miles has other duties. He looks into federal aid, assists with attend- ance records, and does various other jobs. Yet even with his hectic schedule, he finds time to make occasional visits and inspections at high school. Mr. Miles and Mr. Jordon are behind the future plans of our school. They work continually to find ways to improve our schools. They were challenged back at the beginning of the school year to make the North Central Evaluation a success, which they did. It is their goal to make our DeWitt schools the best in the state. 29 zSc(zoot USoazcl 30 (L. to R.): Carl Raabe. Tommy Williams. Pres. Eddie Lumsden. Cal Aufderheid. Elizabeth Graves. This team was the first Dewitt Team to ever enter into the state playoffs. They finished with the best season record since 1970. They were also the 6AA Conference Co-Champs. The 1979 Dragons placed six people on the all-region team, with four Dragons receiving honorable men- tion recognition. Also, Head Coach Ken Newson was named Co- Coach of the year. Truly, the Dragons and their coaches proved their classic ability. 166 1979 DRAGONS 1979 Sr. Dragons are. (from Left to Right): 1st Row: Stephen Hearn. Jeff Hageman. In front of a packed stadium, the Dragon defense held the Red Devils, and Clifford Ran- som scored on runs of 68 and 27 to make the final score 12-0. The next week, the Dragons trav- eled to Marvell to play a tough.Mus- tang team. Thanks to the fine passing of quarterback Rick Duffield and excellent receptions by Mark Horton and Clifford Ransom, the Dragons stole the game from the Mustangs in the final seconds. The 14-13 win put the Dragons at 2-0 for the year. The following Friday, the Dragons were again on the road — this time to Holly Grove. After a scoreless first quarter, the Dragons scored twenty points by the end of the first half. The Dragons scored once in the second half to up the score 27-0. The Dragons were again on the road Friday. Sept. 21. against AAA DRAGONS foe Dumas. The Bobcats appeared ready against the tough Dragons until the final seconds. The Dragons scored with only seconds remaining. Wynn Strain added the final score 7-6. The Dragons finished the night with an unblemished record of 4-0. The Dragons returned home the fol- lowing week against an unevenly matched Elaine Panther team. The Dragons easily handled the Panthers, 42-12. The undefeated Clarendon Lions came to Dragon Stadium October 5 to meet an undefeated Dragon team. The two teams were tied for the top spot in 6AA conference. The Lions were ranked first in AA state stand- ings, with the mighty Dragons not far behind at third. A controversial fum- ble recovery in the third quarter put a dampener on the Dragon spirits, but they still led 12-6. Late in the fourth quarter, the Clarendon quarterback scored from a yard out to give the l O FINISH: 8-3 Lions a controversial 13-12 win. The Dragons bounced back after the shock of the preceding week against the 1978 State Champs. Bar- ton Bears. After scoring on the open- ing drive, the Bears couldn't hold the powerful Dragon offense, which scored four times to make the final score 28-7. The Dragons rose to the occasion as they walloped the Dermott Rams on October 19, with a score of 46-6. Despite all the pressures of homecom- ing. the Dragons came out ahead of the Rams, which were no match for the Dragons. The Dragons traveled to England the following week to finish up their conference schedule, by beating the England Lions 28-0. The Dragon offense racked up 347 total yards with England picking up only 57. The last regular season game took place November 3, against rival Stutt- gart. The Dragons lost their second game of the season 34-24. The Dragons entered the 1979 State Playoffs ranked fourth in the state. Everyone expected the Dragons could easily handle the Stamps Yellow jackets — that is everyone but the Stamps Yellowjackets. They were fired up when the Dragons got there and still fired up when the Dragons left. Both defensive teams fought hard the entire night, but the Yellowjackets ended up on top of the scoreboard, 7-- 0. Every Dragon coach, fan, and player felt that the Dragons could beat Stamps 99 out of a hundred times and that cold, crisp November 10th night was the one time that the Yellowjackets could and did defeat the mighty Dragons. Even though the 1979 Dragon team didn't finish their season as everyone had hoped, they did help fulfill our fondest dreams. 171 8 E N 11979-80 Senior Basketball Team is from left to right: Rick Duffield. Without their help, the job would have been very difficult. One person who deserves a special thanks is Jimmy DeVore. He has taken many of the pictures for the 1980 Dragon and has given them to us at no charge. Ralph Relya has allowed us to use his printing room and chemicals to develop pictures. This has allowed us to meet important deadlines. We also thank Glenda Patton who has helped the staff in many ways this year. In addition to the above, a special thanks goes to our families who have understanding and consideration when we have been so busy working on the annual. We also appreciate the faculty and administration and their help this year. 198 ANDI'S HAIR SHOP Owner Andrea Blumhorst 222 S.
