Blood9 Sweat, and Tears In GREAT anticipation, DeWitt fans crowded into Red Devil stadium to watch the Sr. Dragons open their '78 season on September 1. With a new head coach Ken Newsom, and a bright outlook, the Drag- ons were ready to win — and win they did. DeWitt showed their stuff as they defeated Altheimer, a con- ference foe, 14-6. The following week, DeWitt squeezed by another conference team, Marvell Mustangs, 12-8. It was the first of three home games before the Dragons began a road trip that took them to Elaine, Clarendon, Bar- ton, and Dermott. DeW itt raised their season and conference record to 3-0 as they defeated the Holly Grove Panthers 22- 12 on September 15. The next Friday night brought the Dumas Bobcats to Dragon Stadium. The evenly matched teams fought into the game's closing sec- onds, but Dumas was to go home victorious, while the Dragons suffered their first eason loss in the non- conference, 12-8. 28

Bouncing back from the Dumas game. DeWitt handily defeated Elaine on their own home territory. A second half offensive surge lifted the Dragons to a 26-12 conference victory over the Panthers. DeWitt was handed their second loss of the sea- son. in a big upset on Clarendon territory. The Lions won, 21 14. The week of the Barton game brought much enthusiasm to DHS. The Dragons were destined to lose to the number one state ranked Bears in a 26-0 shutout in the Bears' Stadium. DeW itt ended their two-game losing streak at Der- mott in a non-conference game the following week. The Dragons prevailed 21-15. For the first time in many years DeW'itt won their Homecoming game. Weekly festivities brought spirit to an all-time high as the Dragons defeated confer- ence foe England Lions 19-6 on October 27. November 3 brought about the close of a great sea- son as the Dragons teamed up against arch rival Stuttgart Ricebirds for the Arkansas County title. The Ricebirds had already clenched the 8AAA con- ference championship and were very surprised to find DeW itt ready to play football. The battle contin- ued to the game's closing seconds with Stuttgart barely nipping the Dragons 16-14. Six and four ain't bad.
