With a new head coach Ken Newsom, and a bright outlook, the Drag- ons were ready to win — and win they did. DeWitt showed their stuff as they defeated Altheimer, a con- ference foe, 14-6. The following week, DeWitt squeezed by another conference team, Marvell Mustangs, 12-8. It was the first of three home games before the Dragons began a road trip that took them to Elaine, Clarendon, Bar- ton, and Dermott. DeW itt raised their season and conference record to 3-0 as they defeated the Holly Grove Panthers 22- 12 on September 15. The next Friday night brought the Dumas Bobcats to Dragon Stadium. The evenly matched teams fought into the game's closing sec- onds, but Dumas was to go home victorious, while the Dragons suffered their first eason loss in the non- conference, 12-8. 28 Bouncing back from the Dumas game. DeWitt handily defeated Elaine on their own home territory. A second half offensive surge lifted the Dragons to a 26-12 conference victory over the Panthers. DeWitt was handed their second loss of the sea- son. in a big upset on Clarendon territory. The Lions won, 21 14. The week of the Barton game brought much enthusiasm to DHS. The Dragons were destined to lose to the number one state ranked Bears in a 26-0 shutout in the Bears' Stadium. DeW itt ended their two-game losing streak at Der- mott in a non-conference game the following week. The Dragons prevailed 21-15. For the first time in many years DeW'itt won their Homecoming game. Weekly festivities brought spirit to an all-time high as the Dragons defeated confer- ence foe England Lions 19-6 on October 27. November 3 brought about the close of a great sea- son as the Dragons teamed up against arch rival Stuttgart Ricebirds for the Arkansas County title. The Ricebirds had already clenched the 8AAA con- ference championship and were very surprised to find DeW itt ready to play football. The battle contin- ued to the game's closing seconds with Stuttgart barely nipping the Dragons 16-14. Six and four ain't bad. All Region Football Senior Jeff Gunell ma le all-region runningback: Seniors Drew Counee ami Seolt Butcher made all-region defensive ends; Senior Steve Harris made all-region tackle; and Junior Clifford Ransom made all-region defensive secondary. Rick Duffield and Terry Smith received honorable mention honors. Dragons At the beginning of this year's homecoming game, the Dragons exploded through the cheerleaders’ sign and went on to defeat England. Play action during the Marvel and DeWitt game, as the Dragons defeat d the Mustangs in Dragon Stadium. 30 Friday afternoon FCA huddles became ritual, but not boring. PEParation. 31 We knew, but no one told Number 1 ranked Barton. Isn’t it amazing how many sore throats this little stick can cause? Spir- ited Seniors won it six of the ten pep assemblies. They returned to DHS to learn that cheering for the DRAGONS at games wasn’t their only task. Late practices, sore muscles, painting signs (and anything else in the way), selling ribbons and cushions, organizing pep assemblies, and baking goodies, were activities they often faced with tired smiles. The cheerleaders raised that Dragon spirit at the football bar-b-que and the parade, too. The 1979 DHS season will be no exception. This year the boys will be assisted by Coach Newsom, Coach Johnston, Coach Davis, and Coach Timmons. Last season saw many new records set and old ones matched. The team is sure that this year will be even better. There are many returning athletes, and some very promising new ones. Combined with the excellent coaching makes the total outlook for the Dragons look very bright. Anyone for a four mile RACE?? Long-distance runners, Ronnie Dillion and Terry Campbell, have high hopes of breaking their old one and two mile records. 41 Friday. Oelolier 27. Pro.: Billie Jo Cotten. See.; anil Tan a LI rod, V. Pro. Main changes have been made in the DHS Band program in the past two ears. Since Doug West, DHS Band director, transferred here from Paragould in 1977 man improvements have occur- red. Among these and most obvious of all are the Band’s new uniforms which were an addition to the marching and concert hand. This year was also the first year for the marching flag corp yet, the hand doesn’t end at the end of football season. They now perform at the Dragon home basketball games as a Pep band. Last year the band received first divi- sion ratings at region contest and second division ratings at state contest. It is apparent that the band is recover- ing from its few years of downfall and it’s no secret who’s the director. The Headless Drummer! Jr. High All Region: I to r. 1st row: B. Ferrell. H. Jackson.
