Now that our educational goals have been realized, we stand ready to go forth from Clinton fully prepared to meet lifels challenges. XVe owe a debt of gratitude to our parents, principal, and teachers, who have helped us make this possible. One of the greatest qualities of youth is its resilient optimism. The problems facing us are numerous, hut with this optimism vvc will overcome them. For we are the future America. The life of this great nation rests in our hands. XVe must use the tools of knowledge acquired here at Clinton to further rnankinds strides toward world pcacc. Though we possess the potential to erase man from the face of thc earth, we must and shall channel this tremendous power into pf-acctimc industry. llowcvcr, no matter what star you fellow graduates choose to follovv. wc arc surc that you will always rcmemher Clinton with affection and pride. To our principal, teachers, and advisors, we say, 'i'I'hank you for all you have done. Your efforts were not in vain. Hock Dear Seniors: As I sat down to write this letter, I wondered how I could express all the emotions that I felt. The four fleeting years we have spent at Clinton have been joyous ones-ones in which We have grown mentally, physically. and spiritually. There are many happy memories that flood my niind at this tinu-. I renieniber the Sunday night cramining for that Monday morning History linalg the thrill ol watching our lootball learn defeat Stuyvesanlg the Winning ol a basketball game at Nladison Square Car- deng even the lunchroom chatter or looking lor sonu-one with that extra nickle to help purchase one of those delicious Federals. All these are fond memories, but most of all, I think we will always remember the many wonderful friends we made here in Clinton. For this really is the glory of Clinton, its warmth and kinship. NVe now leave these high school joys and enter a bewildering world, a world of great tension and responsibilities. VVe hope that through the knowledge we have acquired at Clinton we will be able to go out into the 'world better prepared to meet the challenge that awaits us, and help, if only in a small Way, to make the second half of the twentieth century a better era to live in. MY- A- 1581105- Vvilggn, Daniel Schechfgr R0l'J6l'I Alilll BlLlI'I'lC To my fellow-graduates: It has been said that advice should only be given when asked for. Before we part to take our st-vc-ral paths in life, I should like to express to you a few ideas to take along and to ever keep before you. It is hard to bclicvc that we will soon be leaving Clinton, after having been so much part of her, but I realize that we must cncountcr bigger and more rigorous trials in our lifetime. The diploma that we will receive at graduation symbolizes more than a certificate of merit. It is in Clinton, that we have developed our sense of obligation and devotion to the ideals that we have believed in. Now wc take our placc among the proud Clinton graduates of sixty years. In our last four years, you and I have matured physically, mentally and spiritually. We have developed good traits and are now ready to face, confidently, the outside world. In facing new and exciting experiences, l hope that you will try to remember the motto that guided us through these years at Clinton-Sine Labore Nihil-nothing is accomplished without work. Here at Clinton we have developed under our American heritage of free thought and speech. Let us all carry a sense of conviction and faith in our deeds and ideals. When we have attained the self-confidence and spirit that our forefathers had, we can be sure that we will stand unshaken in the face of whatever problems may confront us, Our aims in life might all differ, but one goal should prevail for us all, regardless of the personal quests we might have in mind. We should all strive to aid in the advancement of our society for the benefit of all mankind. Pray Cod we will succeed! I wish you the best of luck in the endeavor which you have chosen. May happiness go hand in hand with your success during the span of your life. Gordon Genek G.O. President IA EXECUTIVE COUNCIL if Mr. W. Degnan Gordon Genek Mr. A. The two dances with Hunter High and the Clinton Nite show, Heaven Can IVait, were very entertain- ing. Athletically, we were disappointed by the lroopsters when they lost to George Vtfashington H.S.. 64-61. in the P.S.A.L. quarter-finals at Madison Square Carden. Once again we faced Regents, and once again we were eager to enjoy our summer recess. for we knew that next term we would be seniors. September, 1959-january. 1960 IVe were finally seniors when we returned to the Mansion for our fourth and final year. However. somehow. Clinton seemed different to usg perhaps. it was because we were now seniors. XYe had finally reached the top rung of the ladder. and could afford to look down on those unfortunate lower termers. Many new changes greeted us. but perhaps. the most important was the retirement of Doc'l Irwin Guernsey. The lone Governor victory came over Evander, while defeats were suf- fered at the hands of Far Rockaway, Curtis. Stuywesant, Monroe and jefferson. Sharing the quarterbacking slot for the Governors were Tony Crescenzo and Mike Emanuelo. Lou Castaldo and Lloyd Big Daddyl' Lipscomb started at the halfback positions, while Mike Garcia occupied the fullback post. Snaring the sweeping passes of Crescenzo and Emanuelo were Ielf Seiden and Gene Parker. Filling up the forward wall were tackles Gary Gubner and Gary Landsberg, guards Chick DiVietro and Cap- tain Tony Castaldo. and center Richard Don- ohue. Despite the poor showing of the grid- sters, individual achievements did not go un- noticed in the New York City newspapers. FAR ROCKAVVAY Far Rockawayis interception of Tony Crescenzols pass with less than four minutes to play squelched a late Clinton drive and gave the Sea Horses a 20-12 opening game victory. Clinton tallied first when halfback Lou Castaldo took Crescenzoys handoff and bolted three yards to paydirt. jeff Seidens touchdown knotted the score at 12 all in the third period, but a fourth quarter pass play covering 65 yards decided the game for the Sea Horses. The Tigers opened the scoring in the second quarter, but on the ensuing kickoff Lloyd Lipscomb rambled 70 yards for the tying tally. Midway in the third period Tony Crescenzo plunged over from the 1 to put the Governors out in front. Lou Castaldos two point conversion following Crescenzols tally proved to be the winning margin. CURTIS A devastating single wing attack by Cur- tis hurled the gridders to their second defeat of the season, 26-0. It was the first victory for the Staten Islanders in three years. All of Curtis' points canie in the first half. Qu f,,AV 'qw' 'inl- STUYVESANT Clinton went down to its third defeat of the season, bowing to its arch-rivals, the Peglegs of Stuyvesant, 14-12, on a mud- drenched, rain-swept field before television and grandstand audiences. Lloyd Lipscomb put our team out in front with a pair of TD's before halftime. His first tally came on an 80 yard, broken field punt return, while his sec- ond was the result of a three yard run. MONROE fXIonroe's two-touchdown second half gave the Eagles their hrst triumph over the Covernors in eleven years. The final score of the Election Day encounter was 20-lti. Ilalf- back Italph Vanacore went ofl' tackle for six yards for the first tflinton score and seven minutes later, Nlike l'lllltlllllt'l0 capped a 55 yard Governor drive with a two yard burst np the middle. Five of the Ieflls eight tallies were scored by full- back Larry Bernstein, who copped the city scoring title with 128 points. Playoifs at Madison Square 1 Garden, March 1, slammed the door N 1 Q shut on the Governors, 1959-1960 hoop season. Although this seasonls 15-5 record didnit come near the ledgers compiled over the past three years, it was a tremendous accomplishment for our squad. The team was Kgreenf' but the players had heart, and came through in the clutch for Coach Hank jacobsohn. Only Nolan K'Bustern Brackett and Captain Howie Bernstein saw any action last year, and that was limited. Ron Dubison and Iulio Brown, the team's two top scorers, and Len VVilson, developed entirely this year. Opening the season on a sour note, No- vember 13, the Governors bowed to Wingate T4-53. but recuperated to blast Commerce TO-56, the following week. In the first tele- vised 'cHigh School Game of the XYeek,' Clinton was mashed by the defending City Bgilu Q 151 -Rlklf Champions, the Kangaroos of Boys High, 9-1-61. The hoopsters closed out the pre- season exhibition schedule on November 30, following wins over Morris and Monroe, with a TO-61 loss to Columbus. Edging out Taft, 6362, in the first league tilt, December 3, Clinton held on to its three-year 23 game league win skein. Sci- ence, Roosevelt, and Dodge were shown no mercy, as the Governors zipped by them, driving for their fifth straight Bronx H Crown. Picking up where they left off in Bronx 11 play, the cagers splattered Music and Art, T2-17, after the winter recess. Revenge for last yearis loss to George VVashington in the Garden came on January 8, when we lam- basted the Trojans, in a non-league tilt, 8-1- 44. Starting the second round of play in our division, we toppled Taft, T5-51, and were guaranteed a play-off birth. Brackettls tap-in, with less than one minute remaining in the game, gave Clinton a 52-51 victory over Roosevelt, january 15. After closing out the regular season by out-scoring their last three opponents Dodge, Science, and Music and Art, 231-129. the Governors drew a preliminary round game against Seward in the Garden playoffs and defeated the Sparkers, T2--59. Re- turnees Mike Backer, Bruce Milov, Howie Ackerman, and joe Zicherman will try to better their eHorts of last year when they were eliminated by one stroke in a heartbreaking sudden death overtime in the City Championship semi-final round by Curtis. , I 17' TENNIS TEAM Mr. M. Plager RIFLE TEANI Nlr. ll. .Iacobsohn FENCINC TEAM Mr. F. Ilock TENNIS With the season just getting underway, Clinton's tennis team hopes to improve its showing of last year. Heading a strong team is Captain Steve Brooks who is backed up by Marc Nagel, Howie Dohrman, Stan Pargman, and Barry Naminworth. Coach Morris Plager expresses good faith in the teamis chances. GOLF TEAM Mr. D. Tobey 127 in-Q. 4 K, A , i mar gg f, ff By shattering eight records in as many meets Qearly press time prevented our printing all but the first outdoor meetj with throws better than 60'6 , Cary Cubner proved himself one of, if not the best, high school shotputter of all time. In the Queens-Iona Relays, the first meet of the out- door season, he brightened his chances for the 1964 Olympics by chucking the 12 pound ball 64'4 and tallying all of the thinclads? five points. This was the third best throw ever recorded in national high school competition. A mile relay team of Rupert Crawford, Floyd Fuller, VVarren Smith, and Bob Bryand finished first in one of the classified mile relays. Cubner broke the 26-year-old P.S.A.L. record February 23, as he led the tracksters to sixth place in the City Championships with a heave of 61'111!2 . Smith added three points to Cubner's five by crossing the 880 yard run wire third, while the 1200 yard relay team donated the ninth point with a fifth place finish. Smashing the meet record by three feet, Cubner captured first place in the National A.A.U. Interscholastic Track and Field Meet, February 20, with a toss of 63'11f2 . Pegging his shot 61'2V4 at the New York University Interscholastic Track Meet, February 12, he captured first place, and again broke a meet record by three feet. Continuing his assault on the sixty foot barrier, Cubner racked up an- other meet record and first place in the Mayoris Trophy Meet, january 29, by chucking the shot 60'61!4 . He paced the tracksters to a fourth place P.S.A.L. finish. Capturing the National Scholastic Indoor Record previously held by Henry Korn of Stepinac, Cubner hurled the leather covered shot 63'3 in the St. Francis Meet, january 23. Craw- ford placed fourth in the 440 yard dash, while Smith took fifth in the 880 yard run to give the Governors a third place tie with Boys High. In the first two meets of the indoor season, the Cardinal Hayes Meet, january 16, and the Bishop Loughlin Meet, Ianuary 9, Cubner hit 6O'7lfQf' and 61'2 respectively. The Cross Country Team, paced by Captain Vic Duncan, who finished third, captured the Bronx Championship for the second consecutive year, October 29, and were awarded the Sherry Coldberg Trophy during an assembly program three weeks later. VVarren Smith, Nat Robinson, Andre Smith, and Fred Blackburn finished seventh, eleventh, fourteenth. and sixteenth re- spectively to close out the scoring. Clinton inet-tune the foster parent of a Vietnamese girl, Nguyen Thi lloa. Our assistance to this destitute child may enable her to be victorious in her battle against disease and poverty. Hoa is a little, ten year old girl who cannot remember the last time she had enough to eat. She lives in Saigon in an old dilapidated shack with her parents, her sister Le, aged seventeen, and her seven year old brother, Ky. Her father and Ky have tuberculosis, with no hope for a cure for they have no money for treatments. Her mother and her sister Le earn barely enough for food. Hoa was five years old when Communist troops from North Vietnam swept down to defeat the French and envelop a large part of South Viet- nam. Hoa and her family, along with 850,000 refugees, fled to Saigon. The city overflowed with the homeless and hungry. Life was nothing but a desperate day to day struggle for survival. Hoa's father, however, was not strong enough to resist the efforts of constant anxiety and privation. He has been suffering from tuberculosis since 1956, and is now too sick to Work. He received treatments, but these had to be discontinued because of lack of money. Hoais mother and sister earn only 406 a day selling rice cakes and peanuts. They have had to borrow, little by little, until their debts now amount to 34118, a tremendous sum for this poverty-stricken family. Hoa is in the second grade of primary school where she is allowed to attend, tuition free. She is a good student in all her classes, and would like to be a teacher when she grows up. Our assistance will provide Hoa with food, clothing, medical care, and an 38.00 cash grant every month. But even more important for her, will be the thought that she has so many good friends here at Clinton, thousands of miles away, who care enough about her to help. Stephen Cohen 4 44?
