We have finally achieved our immediate goal, that of helping our teachers to prepare us for an active part in our democratic way of life. In time, we will alleviate the burdens of our parents and seek the path of righteousness and success. However, once found, this path may prove a diflicult one to conquer, even to the blossoming optimism of youth. Various obstacles may, at times, seem insurmountable, but, nevertheless, We will consistently strive to better ourselves and achieve our common purpose. No doubt, We have all thought about a glorious future enhanced with whatever attributes we may attain for ourselves through constant applica- tion of the golden rule. Yet, how many of us Will really try to assume a responsibility which Will benefit others as Well as ourselves. We are the future America! We will have to assume the burdens of the free world! No job in our democratic society is too important or too unimportant. I Wish you luck in Whatever Held of endeavor you may enter. Benjamin Dear Fellow Craduates: All good things must come to an end, but their pleasures will last for- ever. The final year of our high school education is rapidly coming to a close. Our fundamental teachings are now over and the inevitable tests of life must be faced. Here at Clinton, we have made many friends and acquaintances. Some of us may meet again while others, because of individual aims, may never see one another hereafter. The seed that was planted in our freshman year of high school has shown steady growth. High school has matured us, and like the seed which will later grow into a mature tree, we will branch off in many directions. VVhat sort of lives We will lead is not a matter of chance, but a matter of personal preparation. We may be rich, poor, happy, or sad. WV e may be successful or we may be failures. Degnan Mr. A Isaacs UNE ATTENDANCE SQUAD ENGLISH OFFICE SQUAD Mr. C. Biermann Mr. J. McConnell Dr. S. Bernhar DANCE BAND Mr. B. VVeiss O R LIFE AT CLIN TO September, 1953 - january, 1954 VVe were freshmen. According to the dictionary, a freshman is a student in the first year of a course in a school. But We were more than freshmen. VVe were defeated fresh- men-defeated by the order of things. The year before, We had been in the eighth grade of public school and had thought we were tops, We knew all the tricks and nobody had better fool with us. And now we were bullied, derided and forced to buy gym spots and escalator passes in a school that was much too large for its short name. But, aside from our problems, we were proud of the Red 'ni Black. Bob Boyar was elected C-.O. Presi- dent, thanks to c'Busterv VVolosky's mauling of the enemy line, We Won the mythical Bronx-Manhattan football crown, in basket- ball, Ierry Vogel and Bill Murphy led us to a play-off spot in the Carden, Where We lost to Columbus, and to round off the social sea- son, the school held its Fifth Annual Music Nite. And, With this, We meek ufreshiesv ended our first term at Clinton Wandering through the mazed halls in rubbers to escape getting Wet from the snow, rain, and hail which greeted us as We left the building. February, 1954 - june, 1954 The snow fell. It covered cars, streets, trees, houses, and even the cold gray walls of our Mansion on the hill. And through the soft white blanket, we trudged to school. XV e were now second term freshmen and would not be fooled by the seniors who told us that the music tower was in the sub-basement and that to get to the pool we had to take the i'Lexn to 167th Street. NVe also realized that the main purpose of the section officers was to Mpushu the sale of CO. cards. We felt oriented, but to the seniors we were still stupid freshmen. The Governors had another excellent term athletically, due to the power of our great catcher, Don XVhitcomb and the superb arm of Ioe Laspagnoletta, we made the city championship playoffs in baseball only to be defeated by Madison: in addition to which, our keglers became the Bronx Bowling Champs. Ioe Rullan was elected GO. Presi- dent. The fantastic turnout for 'cStalag 17,,, that termis Clinton Nite production made it ALUBINI SQUAD Mrs. R. Presser GUIDANCE SQUAD Miss A. Danaher -f as VS CLINTON BAND Mr. F. Crapel 15 ARISTA Mr. S. Kirsehner Dr. I. Guernsey CLINTON ORCHESTRA Mr. VV. Hlad a hugh financial success. And, as the end of our freshman year came nearer, we dreamed of lolling in the sun during the summer With- out ever thinking of school. VVe also dreamed of our ubelovedw seniors suffering through as- sorted regents Qfor as yet, we had no idea what they were, lucky for usj. With these visions in our heads, the term ended. September, 1954 - january, 1955 XVe returned from our summer rustica- tion as sophomores. VVe were now not the lowest form of life at Clinton, albeit we were faced with a new problem. XVhen we were freshmen, there were nine sections, now there Were twenty-nine. A migration from the Junior Highs had trebled our numbers. Im- mediately, a strong class unity arose, for as any student knows, Gin unity there is strengthf' As We roamed through the halls of our Mansion, We yearned for sophomore but- tons to distinguish ourselves from that hor- rible breed called freshmen, but to no avail. Time marched on and the ever-popular Lou Rossi commandeered the CO. through a profitable year climaxed by a dance with Julia Riclnnond High School and the Sixth Annual Music Nite. Athletically, the bowling team defeated Brooklyn Tech for the city title. Once again the snow fell and we trooped to school flinging snowballs at everything and everybody. February, 1955 - June, 1955 This was the term of famous firsts. Lou Rossi demonstrated his overwhelming popu- larity by becoming the first boy in 30 years to be re-elected President of the GO. Though the basketball team did not enter the play- offs, VVayne Davis, our sensational hoop star, was selected for the All-City High School Basketball Team. In baseball, Don Wliit- comb, playing his fourth year as catcher, piloted the Red 'n' Black to a triple tie for division honors between Evander, Monroe, and Clinton Cwe took second place in a play- off matchj. And spring came, the snow melted, the green grass grew strong on our spacious lawn Cdespite the heavy weight of seniors lying on itl, the trees bloomed, and even the ivy on the building bared its green beauty for all to see. Along with spring, TICKET SELLING SQUAD Mr. L. Katz CLINTON CHORUS Mr. H. Dyke CLINTONIAN SQUAD Mrs. B. Isaacs LIBRARY SQUAD Miss C. Fitzgerald and the feeling of nostalgia, reverence, and laziness came the Fourteenth Annual Clinton Nite performance featuring c'Command Deci- sionf which was a smash hit. But the firsts were not all enjoyable, we got a taste of Qughj regents. For most of us, this meant strenuous review of Biology and Tenth Year Math. Yet, despite the uncertainties, we emerged victorious, minus only a few linger- nails. After the regents we were able to look around and enjoy the arrival of summer in all its splendor. September, 1955 - January, 1956 This was it. We had now completed half our high school education and were only one step away from being seniors ourselves. Jay Levine was elected C.O. President. The social season included the Seventh Annual Music Nite, and dances with Iulia Richman and Hunter High Schools. The Clinton Steamroller trampled Stuyvesant Cfor the fourteenth time in fifteen yearsj by the score of 39-12. This was not unusual since we swamped the rest of the city and became mythical city champs Qthis, incidentally, for the first time since l932j. And then, as We awoke one morning, and looked through the apertures in our walls known as windows, we perceived that autumn was gone. XVe deduced this by discovering that snow lay on the ground. Snow, that turned the brown earth, green cars, gray Walls, and black Clinton jackets to White was here with all its wonders. Then came the period of relaxation for most, while the others struggled through various regents. February, 1956 - June, 1956 After the hectic last two weeks in janu- ary, we resigned ourselves to the fact that We must return to our beloved hilltop retreat and try to train our minds to do a little think- ing. This was invariably difficult since we hardly ever got along with the teachers some sleepy program committee selected for us Cprobably by picking lotsj. And after many vain attempts to have our programs changed Kas juniors We knew all the anglesj, we suc- cumbed to the will of the minority. Richie Pomboy was elected GO. President over Lee Nackman by a majority of eleven votes. In basketball we were Qas Was usually the casej champs in our division, but Were defeated in CLINTON NEWS Mr. L. Simon STUDENT COURT Mr. G. MROOIH Servicev was the title of the Fif- teenth Annual Clinton Nite production, under the direction of Mr. jay Abramowitz. Regents were next on the agenda, but We looked forward at this time to the ensuing year as exalted seniors at our favorite school. September, 1956 - Iune, 1957 VVhen We returned to school for our senior year, We became increasingly aware of a very complicated series of events which were to occupy our thoughts and conversa- tions for quite some time. In Iune, 1956, Poland made its bid for its independence from the Soviet Union, a revolution that pro- longed itself through the summer and into our senior year. Instantaneously, events began to concatenate as the people of Hungary SCIENCE SQUAD Mrs. E. Silinsky began a revolution not only to free them- selves from Russia but also to free themselves from the bonds of the Communist World. At its inception, however, this revolution seemed hopeless since the patriots of freedom, who Were fighting amidst the blood of their com- rades, anticipated help from the Free World. The inability of the West to grant this help enabled Soviet tanks to crumble the hopes of more than nine million people into oblivion. Thus, While one nation became independent of Russia by remaining Within a Communist economy, another succumbed to the brute strength of the Soviet Union. Four months after Poland had begun its revolt, another crisis Qwhich is still being de- bated in the United Nations as I am writing this storyb evolved, this time in the Mid-East. The state of Israel, an oasis of democracy in a desert of totalitarianism, invaded Egypt in the belief that the best defense is a strong offensef, Creat Britain and France soon joined Israel since they believed that the Suez Canal was vital to the existence of the Free YVorld. This invasion of Egyptian soil, however, ended soon afterwards when, at the request of the United Nations, a cease fire was arranged and Creat Britain and France withdrew their troops. This invasion of Egypt came about at a time when Russia was still occupied with the revolts of her satellites and the United States was in the midst of a Presi- dential election. Thus, these guardians of democracy virtually had a free hand in ap- proaching their problem. However, switching to the domestic scene, the election, which was previously mentioned, was odd in its outcome in that a Republican President, Dwight D. Eisen- hower, was elected by a landslide while a Democratic Congress accompanied him to VVashington. In our own school, in the results of a poll conducted by the Clinton News, Adlai Stevenson, the Democratic Presidential candidate, was favored by a slim margin. Thus, for the first time in our lives, we, as seniors, displayed a definite interest in the affairs of state of our great country. In this same year, the student body of DeNVitt Clinton witnessed a number of other events which concerned them more directly VI if I W M 55 Z iff lf SENIOR OFFICE SQUAD Mr. F. Our social season was highlighted by the Eighth Annual Music Nite and a dance with Hunter High School. Moreover, in the Spring term, we witnessed a very successful Clinton Nite in the production of KWhat a Lifelv and had very enjoyable evenings at our Prom and Class Nite. Academically, we struggled through our required regents and almost suc- cumbed to such subjects as business law, earth science, typing, advanced lunch, and double study. Athletically, however, the boys from the Mansion brought the Governor as fine a sea- son as we have ever had. Our football team, led by co-captains Lenny Rochester and Frank Wilson, defeated our ancient rival, Stuyvesant, by a score of 53-6 and Went on to capture the Bronx-Manhattan championship. Our basketball team, captained by Richard Khentigan, fought its way to the Bronx II P. S. A. L. Championship with but one loss, a forfeited game to Dodge Vocational. In bowling, our team, led by David Hayes, managed to sweep the Bronx Championship winning seven of its eight matches. Michael DeRosa, captain of our baseball team, led us to a very successful season. lVith the closing of the P. S. A. L. base- ball season, our anticipation of the future be- gan to molest us. Then, with mounting hopes and aspirations, in no time at all, we became men without a school. XVhile our life at DelVitt Clinton High School was now but one of many precious moments that was to be locked in our minds, some of us were now to enter a strange school, once again as fresh- men. Does man ever achieve his goals or does he merely keep creating more of them? S. A. L. play. Very convincing victories were dealt to Far Rockaway, Stuyvesant, Evander, Flushing, and Monroe. Our P. S. A. L. loss was to unde- feated New Dorp. However, we lost a game to Liberty High School in Bethlehem, Pennsyl- vania. Calling the plays was fleet john Gentilella. Flanking him were Mr. Creased Lightning, Co- Captain Lenny Rochester, and Ed Lewis. In the fullback spot was Dom Mauro. Catching the passes were wingmen Harry Frey and Co-Cap- tain Frank Wilson. Closing in on the line, we come to Walt Wilkinson and Art McIntyre, tackles, Bob Bieber and David Schechter, guards, and i'Woody,' Weyrauch, center. Differing from last year, injuries were kept to a minimum, although Bob Ortiz, slated to be first string quarterback, fractured his arm and was forced to remain on the sidelines the entire season. In compensation for the injury, Bob was made J. V. coach, the Hrst student coach in the city. Doon Weidman, our capable coach, also deserves credit for a job well done. NEW DORP The Governors' high spirits were abruptly cut short when undefeated New Dorp handed them their Hrst defeat in eight games and our first shutout in twelve. The final score was 20-0. With their single-wing style of play, which was new to Clinton, the Centrals scored two touchdowns in the first quarter. FAR ROCKAWAY Recording our first victory of the season, Mr. J. Trailing 12-0 at half time, Len Rochester went into action and ran the second half kick-off back seventy yards for a touchdown. In that same quarter, Ed Lewis scooted twenty-five yards around right end and then plunged over the one foot line to tally six more. john Genti- lella also connected for pass scoring plays. LIBERTY Clinton was defeated by Liberty High School, 35-12, in a night game held at Bethle- hem, Pennsylvania on October 26. Unfamiliar with Pennsylvania rules, Clinton trailed 27-O before the end of the first period. STUYVESANT Peter Stuyvesant and his Pegleg playmates were downed by the Governor eleven at Ran- dalls Island, 53-6, in the annual rivalry on Elec- tion Day. The score was the highest total ever amassed by the two teams in their history. Led and directed by the most valuable player, Len Rochester, who scored 28 points, the team had a field day. Rochester gained 153 yards-21 yards more than the entire Stuyvesant team. Other touchdowns were scored by Rich Itskoff and Dom Mauro. FLUSHING The Governors downed Flushing High School, 41-7, to add one more win to their total. An already common name in the scoring column, Len Rochester, scored four touchdowns and converted four times. Dom Mauro and Marv Goldrich also tallied for the Governors. EVANDER Clinton repeated last yearis victory over Evander by downing them 46-6. Rochester, once again top man, scored 3 TD's, once on an 83 yard run around left end. Evander was unable to score until the last minutes of play. Dom Mauro scored twice on a thirty yard run and a short plunge. MONROE The Red 'n' Black closed its season with a 12-0 victory over Monroe on Thanksgiving Day. The Gov- ernors met with a disappointing experience in the N. Y. U. Interscholastic Championships where they failed to register a single tally. How- ever, in the Mayor's All-City Track and Field Championships, held at Madison Square Garden on February 9, Clinton, tallying Hve points, placed eighth in a Held of sixty-Hve. Carl Rich- ardson, the Governor Expressf won the 280 yard dash turning in a stirring performance. Breaking the meet record of 31.0 seconds, he breasted the tape at 30.7 in the heats and bet- tered that with 30.4 in the Hnals. On February 23, thirty-one schools from the eastern United States and two from Canada sent representatives to Madison Square Garden to participate in the U. S. National Championships. Scoring only two points, the Red 'ni Black tracksters placed fourth in P. S. A. L. standings and twenty-fourth in the meet. At the Indoor City Champs on March 1, Clinton scored twelve points and tied for third CROSS COUNTRY TEAM place. Clinton's sprint medley relay foursome, membering Carl Richardson, Cal Barnes, How- ard Mays, and Gerry Harkness, copped third in their event, in the N. Y. Pioneer Club Meet, terminating the indoor season. The initial cross country meet of the season was held at Van Cortlandt Park on September 29 with Clinton, led by Carl Vail, placing ninth in the Held. From that mediocre start, Clintonis Hill ,Ni Gully runners began to hit stride, getting as hot as calypso. The high-water mark of the season for the harriers came in the N. Y. U. Inter- scholastics in which they garnered second prize in the B division of the P. S. A. L. schools. Gerald Harkness led the way for Clinton as he Hnished nineteenth in a Held which listed three hundred and Hfty entrants. Injuries to key run- ners kept the Governor from competing in both the St. johns and Fordham meets. Returning to the wars on November 2 in the Cross Country Championships, the team could do no better than place twenty-Hfth in a Held of Hfty-one. Closing the season in the Bronx Championships, Clinton produced outstanding individual per- formances and Hnished third. This was a pleasant Hnale for both Coach Scher and his harriers. TRACK AND FIELD TEAM Mr. C. Scher J I SOCCER Coach Alfred VVhitehill culminated his coaching career as his hooters ended a dis- appointing season with a 1-7-1 record. The team, which consisted mainly of sophomores and juniors, was hampered by inexperience and scored only eight goals in the nine game season. Their sole victory was over Bronx Vocational. SWIMMING Culminating in a 44-23 triumph over Taft, the Clinton Mermen's season closed after sending four opponents to the briny deep and receiving a similar fate on three occa- sions. After clear sailing in their first three meets, sinking Columbus, Monroe, and Com- pers, the Aquamen hit a dry spell, running aground against Roosevelt, Evander, and Science, before closing the season in victory. BOVVLINC Concluding their regular Season in De- cember with a 3-0 triumph over Bronx Voca- tional, the pinmen, led by David Hayes, boasted a record of seven victories and one setback. The victories came at the expense of Taft, Bronx Vocational, and Roosevelt, each of whom toppled into the gutter twice. The lone defeat was rendered by the Science Bowlers. Due to several rain-outs, the teamis pre-season games were curtailed by five and the Governors settled for a 7-3 record, down- ing Franklin, Hughes, Stuyvesant, and Com- merce, while succumbing to Machine and Metal Trades, Music and Art, and Aviation. Un the mound for the Mansioners were hurlers Ed Carnesale, Nick DeGennaro, and john Hoover. Behind the plate was catcher Vinnie Orrico, reading around the base paths, we had Bernie Goldhill at first, Larry Miano at second, Captain Mike DeRosa at short, and Charlie Dc Paola at third. Catching the long ones were Bob Ortiz in left, jim Pollin in center, and Charlie Schultz in right. With the cold Weather behind them and nothing but blue skies and fine prospects ahead, the Governors got off to a fine start, copping their first five. First to fall were the Prexies from Taft by the score of 6-1 as Ed Carnesale pitched no-hit ball for the first five innings. After them came Evander, 4-2, April 15, Grace Dodge, 12-0, April 17, Roosevelt, 4-1, May 1, and Gompers, 10-3, May 2. Then came the mighty aggregation from Monroe. After battling one another for seven full innings, the two teams called a truce with the score tied, 7-7, and rescheduled the game for May 27. At that time Monroe and Clinton were tied for first place in the league and the contest was to be the deciding factor, but with neither team budging, the suspense was in- tensified. Luck was not with us though, and, a few days later, the Governors fell before Science, 3-0. By the time the Clintonian Went to press, Clinton had yet to meet Columbus, Morris, and Bronx Vocational. VVe all expect a fine finale to a fine season. Svixtg Evara at Qllintnn OSH?-15571 Sixty years ago, Clinton opened its doors for the first time. Since then, a multitude of boys from all walks of life and of all races and creeds have at- tended Clinton, all working together under the same roof toward the same goal with the same oppor- tunities. About 500 boys and 21 teachers filed into old P.S. 85 on West 13th Street on September 13, 1897. Dr. John T. Buchanan took his seat at the principalls desk, and the first day of classes at DeWitt Clinton High School had begun. In 1906 the building that was the home of DeWitt Clinton High School until 1929 was opened. It was located on 59th Street and Tenth Avenue. In 1908 Dr. Buchanan died and was succeeded by Dr. I. L. Tildsley. On August 1, 1914, Dr. Francis H. Paul took over. The first issue of the Clinton News contained a front-page speech by Dr. Paul. In it, he gave some advice that can be of assistance to Clinton boys even today. To do any- thing in this world worth doingf, remarked Dr. Paul, we must not stand shivering and thinking of the cold and danger, but jump in and scramble through as well as we canf, Many organizations and clubs sprang up during those early years. One of the first was the Chemistry Club. Other earlybirds were the Philatelic Society, Chess and Checkers Club, and the Public Speaking Society. The latter is still functioning today. Many subjects taught in Clinton in those days have since been dropped. Creek, shorthand, melody writing, and psychology were among them. Boys in Clinton were lucky enough to be able to see plays in the assemblies in foreign languages. Dr. Paul had but one dream and hope for Clinton-the construction of a new building. The site chosen was Mosholu Parkway and Navy Avenue in the Bronx. Navy Avenue has since been renamed Paul Avenue in his memory. THE NEWV THE OLD Dr. Paul never lived to see his dream completed. He died on September 9, 1929, only weeks before the dedication ceremonies were held. Parents, teach- ers, and students mourned his passing. One in- structor, Dean Foote, remarked, Dr. Paul literally gave up his life for Clinton. It is now for students and faculty to make our school a worthy memorial. Since then, many teachers and students have helped to make Dr. Paul's dream a reality. Above all, how- ever, looms Doc Irwin S. Cuernsey, without whose guidance and leadership throughout the years, Clin- ton might not be the fine school that it is today. Mr. A. Mortimer Clark suc- ceeded Dr. Paul and remained in Clinton until 1946. During his administration Clinton alumni, students, and teachers fought in the vanguard of the Allied move- ment during World War II. In Iune, 1956, the 100th Clinton graduation exercise was held. XVith the 108rd graduation in january, 1958, the next sixty years of the life of DeXVitt Clin- ton High School will be under way.
