I .' ante? TO THE CLASS OF UNE 52 A Commencement rightly interpreted means the beginning of a new role for each of you rather than the ending of the old. You are about to assume adult status in a society that is threatened from many quarters. War, the threat of War, and internal scandals in our society and in governmental circles give us reason to view With alarm the immediate as Well as the remote future. The history of the World is replete With examples of civiliza- tions that came to a sorry end because the base instincts of the people who composed these civilizations Went unchecked. - Of course, for each irresponsible, unethical member of our society one can point to literally hundreds of people Who have lived nobly and have contributed positively to the Welfare of human society. In the past our Republic has Weathered many storms becauseiour citizenry has shouldered the burdens of civic and moral responsibility in iields both foreign and domestic. It is incumbent on each of you to set a course that Will lead to high moral and ethical standards, Which Will strengthen rather than weaken the society established through the dream of our Founding Fathers.
