' N'fxrsfxiizssggyixjwg 1 A -- -f TO THE CLASS OP IANUARY, 1950: During the last year I have had the pleasure of attending many of our alumni class reunions. These gatherings have hrought together Clinton men representative of our long years as an educational institution. Some of them are older in years than your grandparents. Many of them have achieved great financial success. Many more of them have made contri- hutions to our social and cultural life of a very high order. Prominent physicians, clergymen, accountants, lawyers, judges, industrialists, poets, playwrights, and musicians are numerous. Practically any field of endeavor one can name finds Clinton men in the forefront. ln almost every instance these successful men were sons of poor or middle class parents. Several of them have descriloed to me their start in America as immigrants. Qne very successful lawyer came to America as a penniless orphan. While living with an aunt he supported himself through high school and college selling newspapers. His is not an uncom- mon story. u While you and l can olller many reasons for the individual and the collective success of Americans, fundamentally the respect for the indi- vidual, growing out of our heliel that God created man to enjoy equality of opportunity and freedom of choice, comes closest to the explanation of the success of our great democracy. No honest person can challenge the superiority of our way of life over any other that man has been ahle to devise. The Clinton men of whom l spealc are products of this fundamental philosophy. Their experiences in lite illustrate olojectively the good for- tune We enjoy in being Americans. Their love of country and their en- thusiasm for Clinton demonstrate a determination to pass on to suhsequent generations the heritage they received. They are counting on you. wager J. DR. GUERNSEY I7 The Class President Says: MARVIN BERMAN Senior President The SS. De Witt Clinton, Class of January '50 at the helm, has safely arrived in port. Her mission, to instruct and lead her crew in the way of lite, has loeen successfully completed. A Now that the four year Odyssey has been terminated, we, as veteran members, are ahle to look haclc with pride and satisfaction on our frequent triumphs. We can recall city track championships, cross country titles, hand hall and tennis championships, our tweltth city haslcethall crown, and, more recently, the reinstatement of a hasehall team. Ahove all, we will always rememher the iniormality of our classes . . . humor intermingled with studies to malce the Htrials and trihulationn lighter. Some of our teachers have made many classes extraordinarily rich and intriguing. They were more lilce cluh rooms where We would gather together to ponder over personal prololems with friends and advisers. The old ship is sailing again, hut we are not going aboard. Best wishes for many years of smooth sailing. MARVIN BERMAN Senior President ' JACK VAUPEN MORTON GOLDSTEIN Vice-President Secretary 18 What is an American? JAMES THEOHARIDE5 G.O. President A true American is utterly opposed to any form ot ciivision resting' on race or religion. A true American conforms to the philosophy of ciemocratic government. All oi us in Clinton heiieve in this great American ideal. The American way of iiie is a free church in a free state, anci a free and non-sectarian school in each community, with its doors open to ali. Ciinton's cioors are anoi shaii always he open to ali. Here in Clinton we have marie lite-long friends of ciifierent races and sects. We have iearneci to picic our frienois hecause of their ahiiity and personality, not hecause they are of the same coior or creeci. We, here in Clinton, have had very ciose Contact anci exposeci ourselves to many races anci reiigions, and in this Clinton way we have eciucateci ourselves, eciu- cateci ourseives in such fashion that we no longer countenance iaise propaganda ahout any minority group. Ciinton's great traciitions, championship teams, unparaiieieoi squacis anci outstanciing ciuhs were mouideci from this great icieai. JAMES TI-IEGHARIDES G. O. President 19 AN EDITORIAL: The Time is Now GEORGE J. MOSKOWITZ Editor-in-Chief Perhaps, the greatest tragedy of mankind is the inaioiiity oi man to utiiize the knowledge and opportunity set hefore him. Moreover, his visiiaie hiindness to see these things only adds to his oespondency when at iast he reaiizes this, only to find that it is too iate. Time has run out. As it once was said, it is iater than you think. This is so readiiy proved, time and again, hy the peopie aioout us, our parents, our teachers, our friends. The salesman who siaved at his joh so that his child might receive a better education, a better opportunity than he had. Poor parents who work and save so that their children might enjoy a higher degree of iearning in coiiege. Both parents having iearned through time the vaiue of an education. The time is now. At this point we must choose our own way, without the assistance of parent, teacher, or friend. For their joh is complete, and only our choice hangs in the balance. Time stops for no one. it knows no friends: it knows no enemies. A decision which may readily govern our distant iuture has to he made . . . and is made. Whether to continue our academic studies, or to gain the imowiedge which will in time form our ideals from the worid of husiness is only half the decision. The other haii is the earnest desire to utiiize every forthcom- ing opportunity to its iuiiest expioitation. With this in mind, our parents, teachers. and friends may rest easy knowing that no matter what may iie ahead for each of us, our most pro- found energies wiii he used in ohtaining our ultimate goat-success. It is only natural that among the candidates that come from a large student hody, there will he some interest- ing characters. The first political aspirant we notice is the hoy who promises every- thing it Fm electedf, Waiters in the lunchroom, tive periods a day, girl cheerleaders, a trip across the continent hy hoat for Seniors, and CLO. huttons that light up are his hait for voters. He is usually elected and winds up giving the students a special feature'-fa G.O. huttom tor fifty cents. The second type is always trying to give us, the voters, ua hetter G.O.H and all the advantages that go with it. He is commonly called The New Regimef, Another is constantly demanding that you look at his record. This is poor campaign strategy since Clinton hoys aren,t that interested to talie his advice. Last, hut not the least noticed, of these vote-hunters is the man who gives not a promise, hut a slogan, Betts Is Your Best Bets' This message is seen on numerous tags, posters, cards, and hooks all over the huilding. Wherever you go, there it isg while you are undressing for gym or waiting for a Federal Lunch it stares you in the face, 'Betts ls Your Best Bet. A teacher recently received a paper from a confused freshman who headed the sheet, Jones Besthet. But this method of campaigning is usually an overwhelming success, hecause of its simplicity, which appeals to Clintonites. If you have trouhle deciding on the direction of your vote, there is only one logical thing to do, run for office yourself. ARTHUR SHAPIRO 57 'Q -AQQ wmlfmnmll mint' if iff!
