'wiht ruitming Stand 19691 It is a rainy day and Ioe Clinton is rummaging through the attic of his home to pass the time away. He spies a tan, dust- covered book and draws it from its nook in the bookcase. On the cover, faintly legible, are the letters C L I N T 0 N I A N-Iune 1944, HH-m-m-m. A lot happened during those years I spent in high school, muses loe. Roosevelt was elected President a third time, America was attacked by Iapan, a Selective Service Act was passed, priorities were needed for everything, and you couldn't get a room for love or money. There were abbreviations for every- thing . . . WACS, WAVES, OPA, OWI, GDT, WPB . . . The girls went Akhaki-wackyf If it wasn't a man in uniform, it was Frank Sinatra. lust -mention his name and they'd swoon. I ref member a girl once telling me that his frail appearance appealed to the mother instinct in her. He didn't have a bad voice, come to think of it . , . Harry Iames, the trumpet man, was another heart- stealer . . . and the way the girls copied Veronica Lake's blind-in- one-eye hair-do. Did they look funny! i Those were the days of jitterbugs, zoot suits, and short skirts. You had to grease your foot to get it past the peg at the cuffs of the pants. And those jackets! snickers Ioe, Why, they looked like overcoats the way they hung down almost to the knees. The skirts girls wore were almost as long as the Zoot jackets, they ended before they got to the knees. One ob! jection to short skirts, I remember, was that too many girls with legs that looked better in slacks wore them. So saying, he leans back and, with a smile flickering over his lips and a reminiscent gleam in his eyes, Ioe softly sighs, Yes, those were the happy days. S! , N I gf T 2 ' 1 28
