Student Government Officers Foster Spirit Revival Enthusiasm and creative planning of Student Government leaders were reasons for the major revival of interest in school and school-related activities. With the help ofseniorclass officers, the Executive and Activities Boards held an orientation assembly for freshmen on Sep- tember l in order to promote freshmen in- volvement. An assembly for seniors followed to seek their cooperation in the spirit revival. As a result, more sports tickets were sold than in the past ten years, and student interest soared. In addition to the annual magazine drive, Tiger pennants and pens with the DHS basket- ball schedule were sold. Student Government attempted to streamline meetings by assigning seats to representatives, installing sergeants- at-arms, and requiring stand-up votes. Projects included finding the spirit rock and planning a 40th birthday party for the school. Controversies arose concerning a decision to allow freshmen to enter clubs first semester, a proposed change in the Homecoming Queen system, and plans to install a dome over the senior court. Through the Toledo Area Student Council, a Student Board of Education, one of the first in the country, was established. Student Gov- ernment Vice-president Dave Johnson, as De- Vilbiss' representative, met with board officials to discuss such issues as senior exams, and a student smoking lounge. . Commissioners Election Procedure Causes Controversy Commissioners of the Activities Board plan- ned and carried out varied projects for the student body. Among these were the magazine drive, assemblies, Intramurals, Club Day, and the activities during DeViIbiss Week. Students disputed the fairness of elections held by the Welfare Commission for members of the Homecoming court. lt was claimed that students who carried ballots from their home- rooms to room 122 were tampering with them.
