Trixie Bennett, our senior from Waipukurau, New Zealand, presents Mr. Conr ad with a pictoral study of her country at the National Honor Society induction in December. DeVilbiss life for 1964—1965 To any DeVilbiss student, the 1964-1965 school year is remembered because of certain special hap- penings in his experience. In this book we wish to highlight the year at DeVilbiss—and in the world— to find out why it has been a special one for all of us. The annual activities which go on in the school are important to this history because they consti- tute the core of DeVilbiss life. But what else made 1964-1965 an outstanding year? The experience of having a for eign exchange stu- dent for the first time has enriched many of our lives. Those of us who were lucky enough to know Trixie Bennett realize the great value of the American Field Service, which was responsible for bringing her to DeVilbiss this year. From this program, American teenagers can learn about people in coun- tries all over the world while these students gain information about the American way of life. These exchanges have also proved valuable in many other foreign relations projects, such as the Peace Corps. Trixie, who is from New Zealand, has come in contact with hundreds of students this year. She has learned our ways and perhaps when she returns to New Zealand she will inspire more people there to support the Service. Those closest to Trixie are cer- tain to feel a great loss when she returns to New Zealand. Her smiling, generous personality con- tributed much to this year’s DeVilbiss life. Another event of 1964-65, which may have touched DeVilbiss students less directly, was the World’s Fair. To anyone who attended it, the grandeur of the Fair can be surpassed only by its theme, “Peace Through Understanding.” This is a goal toward which each of us should strive. The Fair in New York City combined the efforts of nations all over the world, blending the most progressive ideas from each company, state, and country with history and legend. The very idea that all of these countries should cooperate on this project, with its theme of promoting peace, is something in which each of us can take pride. In the year past, many people have worked for peace. The sole purpose of the United Nations is to help people exist together happily, without wars or fear or tyranny, recognizing that there are and al- ways will be differences of opinion. There was strain and disunity during 1964-65 among the members of the United Nations. The opening sessions were de- layed because of arguments. Situations in the vari- ous parts of the world resembled seething cauldrons in the Cold War. And this generation saw the pass- ing of several great leaders who helped the cause of
