Earl Robinson Our entire school was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Earl Robinson, our chief custodian. Mr. Robinson had devoted his life to DeVilbiss and had been with us since the opening of the school. Since those first days up until his very last, service to De- Vilbiss was his constant goal. But this was not his only accomplishment. l-le also rendered the very highest type of service to his country, being Wounded in action. All who knew him admired and loved him. To the students he was a special part of everything that is DeVilbiss. To those who Worked with him he was a fair man dedicated to giving as much of himself as possible. This admiration was expressed by the stu- dents through gifts with which his memory was hon- ored. A new flag, courtesy of the Sisco Service Club, will fly over DeVilbiss in commemoration of Mr. Robinson. But DeVilbiss was not his only love. l-le also had a Wife and daughter. We join with them to pay our respects to a truly self-sacrificing man. lt will be many years before the void left by Mr. Robinson will be filled. And even then, though many students Will have left, his impression will still be with us. The succeeding years cannot wipe out the memory of a man who typified the DeVilbiss spirit.

I lust as Cartier stood at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River and surveyed the sweep of the winding river, we also stand at the commencement of a great search. Like the early explorers we are crossing a wide sea and will soon stand on the brink of a new world. We will be the pioneers in a fantastic age. Our mode of travel will not be a wood- en sailing ship or a covered wagon but a jet or even a space ship. Still we are pioneers searching not for gold or lands but ideas and the basic truths that shall spell progress to all men. Our river lies before us, but it is for us to plot our course. Each of us will choose a differ- ent direction or a different route, but that is as it should be, for we are all different and we must mold the educa- tion we are receiving to our individual needs. It is our duty to absorb the prep- aration of our high school career, and to be influenced and shaped by our ex- periences during these formative years. High school is but a leg on our journey into the unknown. To be prepared we must be familiar with what we have already traversed. Then we can as- suredly venture forth to cross the prai- rie, to penetrate the wilderness, to bring light to where there was darkness. Intermediate-of the Wiley-Donders Canal Thomas Ludlow Ashley 27
