Football STATE Cl-lAMPlONSl Culminating one of the toughest schedules in DeVilbiss football history with an eleven win and no loss record, the Tigers were rewarded with a ranking of first place in the state. The future state champs opened the season with a resounding 26-O win over a strong Central squad. This was the most highly publicized game during the City League season and attracted over l0,000 screaming fans to fill Page Stadium to overflow- ing. DeVilbiss then won its next three games against out of town foes by totaling ll3 points and holding opponents to two lone touchdowns. Going into the Waite game with a ranking of fifth in the state, the Tigers defeated last year's city-champions with a 20-O score before a crowd team as a halfback. 136 Dave Bernard-Co-Captain Dave played elementary school football at DeVeaux. l-le played his second season with the varsity as a halfback on offense and de- fense. Determination and hard work paid off for Dave as he was elected to the all-city first Tom English-Co-Captain Tom graduated from Mt. Vernon Grade School but played for Old Orchard in the W.T.- l.A.L. The Tiger eleven then visited Scott's stadium where they capitalized on numerous Scott fumbles and errors to come out on top by a 33-6 score. The state's top team then took their seventh and eighth straight games by downing Lima, 32-U and Dayton, 47-U. Playing under the worst possible weather conditions, Hilton Murphy's boys squeezed by a stubborn Macomber team by a l2-7 count. The Tigers then journeyed to Cleveland to play one of the state's top teams. DeVilbiss' overall bench strength helped the Tigers to win 19-l4. In the annual Thanksgiving day game with Libbey, the Bengals overpowered the south-side eleven 13-7 to finish their season undefeated.

Athletics , As we study the picture of the new Craig Memorial Bridge we can describe it as patterns etched on fertile ground admitting progress to the future. The labor of countless men united with chains bind parts into whole which earns the praise. The athletes try to be the winners, the pride getters, the publicity car- riers, the reputation builders and the stress of notice is upon them. Notice the bridge with its various entrances and exits and con- sider that the plan is lost if even one of the lanes is lost for without the whole there is nothing but failure. The athletes best know the strength of unity, the solidarity of oneness, and the joy of team- work. As that bridge represents the toil of many men so do our victories and defeats show the oneness of organization. They are the athletes, but let us not remember them by the games they won or the valiant efforts they made as they lost, but let us think of them as parts of a gigantic whole exhibiting the joint efforts of many and linked to a planned end. Together linked by adamantine chains. A Hymn in Honour of Love Edmund Spenser COUR ESY OF PUELICITY AND EF N Y CO E TOLE O O IO

Ierry Koszyki lerry graduated from St. Catherines Elemen- tary School. This was his second varsity sea- son as tackle. Fine co-ordination and strength helped Ierry secure a first string position with the varsity this year. Ohio University will be his home beginning next fall. Bill Akos Bill is a graduate of Whittier Grade School. Offensive center and defensive guard were the two positions that Bill played while he was on the varsity team for two years. A place on the all-city team was Bill's reward for his fine ef- forts. Don Anstead Seventeen year old Don is a graduate of Whittier Grade School and played for the Whit- tier Troians. This was his second year on the varsity and it found him playing offensive left end and defensive linebacker. His outstanding play throughout the season gained Don a berth on the Blade-Times all-city team. Bay Ramsey C433 and Tom English U31 team up on a Libbey pass-receiver to prevent a scoring threat
