Boys' Athletics No school would be complete without an efficient Boys' Athletic Department. The enioyment of playing is taught as the fore- most obiect in the gymnastic program and, after that, the success and competition of the game. In class the freshmen and soph- omores participate in tumbling, volleyball, basketball, and other games. Their grades are based on achievement tests. Juniors and seniors participate in wrestling, bas- ketball and boxing, and they also have achievement tests. ln every class sports- manship is taught and is on display every minute. Girls' Physical Education Physical Education as an integral part of school work must contribute to the de- velopment ot the whole person . The main objectives of the girls' physi- cal education program are: to teach the mind as well as the body to be healthy, to assist the girl in acquiring the ability to get along with her companions, to put more emphasis on the fun of the games and the pleasure of dancing, to develop the spirit of fair play not only in games but also in everyday living, and to mold the 'girls into our democratic way of life. KrausefStudy Hel' Tevshefs' The department that gives those students who are interested in business training and secretarial work an opportunity to become ac- quainted with typing, bookkeeping, short- hand, and junior business training, is the Commercial Department. If a student is plan- ning to work in an office, he should begin in high school to build for his career. Many girls have the opportunity of working with Miss Pasch in her office for practical experience. One doesn't necessarily have to be in- terested in working in an office before study- ing a commercial course. Even though a stu- dent does not plan to enter the business world, he will find that the knowledge of shorthand and typing is an invaluable ad- vantage. Library r To give service and guidance to the stu- dents and the faculty is the aim of the DeVilbiss High School Library. Everyone finds, whether he is searching for reference ma- terial or looking for an exciting novel, that the library staff is always eager to help. Since T931 the library's book collection has grown from 2,000 volumes to a present 'l2,000 volumes. The circulation sometimes reaches three hundred books daily, not includ- ing those used in the library. The library also subscribes to more than seventy-five period- icals for information and pleasure reading. 20

Foreign Language Department Although it may seem to be all Greek to part in strengthening the bonds of friendship and busi- you, foreign language students will tell you ness between nations of the world today. that the field of language is not only interest- The languages taught at DeVilbiss are: Latin, Span- ing, butalso serves cinincreasingly important ish, French, and German. Through a study of these languages the student learns to apply the principles of grammar to his reading, writing, and conversation. lt is also realized that a knowledge of the civiliza- tion of another nation is essential to understanding. Consequently a study of their customs, fine arts, govern- ment, history, ideals and philosophy is correlated with the regular work. Our foreign languages department has shown itself in the past to be one of the most interesting, popular, and colorful in the school. Music Department The Music Department of DeViIbiss, under the direc- tion of Mr. Philip Zaugg, has several general and specific aims. Among its general aims are the contribution to the student's personality and development, the recognition and encouragement of talent among students, and the provision of worth-while recreation. In addition to these general aims, the department has these several specific aims: providing musically talented students with a broad musical background, developing the art of performing in public with dignity and poise, and supplying information concerning various types of musical careers. DeVilbiss' musical program provides talented students with many opportunities of expressing themselves in Mr. J. Philip Zaugg, Music Director. mU5lC- 22
