Art Department The Art Department of DeVilbiss is an im- portant one because it strives to show its pupils how art enters into their lives every day. Courses that are planned for students who are interested in entering business art are Fashion Illustration and Commercial Art. Crafts, General Arts, and Painting are offered to students who like to create with various art materials. Whether a student is interested in art as a high school maior, whether he is interested in it as a vocation, or whether he enioys it as a hobby, he will find capable guidance from our art instructors. Realizing the struggles of groups of people in the past to live with each other helps us to see methods of solving our present and future political, economic, and social problems. We review the past in order to better qualify us to analyze these problems. For students with a college obiective a course of Ancient and Medieval History or one of Modern History is offered for pupils who wish a view of world history in a one year course. The real backbone of citizenship training is in the year course of American History and Govern- ment. For seniors a definite analysis in contemporary business and social activities and a course of the life of our neighboring Latin American nations is available. All through the three year curricula current events are taught once a week. l l 9

Mathematics Department Although mathematics is not a required subject, it is not difficult to sense the rising importance ot this course in our modern age of mechanics. In the future there will be few iobs open for men who have not had mathematical training of some kind. The course in General Mathematics provides an opportunity for those, who are not planning to go to college, to take mathematics. Introductory Alge- bra and Plane Geometry are courses which have always been popular with the students. The courses in Advanced Algebra, Trigonometry, and Solid Geometry are designed for those who are plan- ning to continue their study of mathematics in college. A good student of mathematics must be alert and accurate, he must have a sense of reason, patience and determination to sit down and tackle a problem. A concentrated study in this field can help the pupil acquire these desirable traits. Nursing Home Nursing is a very enriching and worth-while course for girls to study. During the first semester first-aid meth- ods are taught. This enables students to render help in the first-aid room. During the second semester tield trips are taken to many public offices, institutions, and hospitals. One ot the most interesting and unusual trips is the one to the State Hospital. The experience and knowledge gained while studying this course helps to develop ability and personality. NURSE: Miss B. Faye Miller

KrausefStudy Hel' Tevshefs' The department that gives those students who are interested in business training and secretarial work an opportunity to become ac- quainted with typing, bookkeeping, short- hand, and junior business training, is the Commercial Department. If a student is plan- ning to work in an office, he should begin in high school to build for his career. Many girls have the opportunity of working with Miss Pasch in her office for practical experience. One doesn't necessarily have to be in- terested in working in an office before study- ing a commercial course. Even though a stu- dent does not plan to enter the business world, he will find that the knowledge of shorthand and typing is an invaluable ad- vantage. Library r To give service and guidance to the stu- dents and the faculty is the aim of the DeVilbiss High School Library. Everyone finds, whether he is searching for reference ma- terial or looking for an exciting novel, that the library staff is always eager to help. Since T931 the library's book collection has grown from 2,000 volumes to a present 'l2,000 volumes. The circulation sometimes reaches three hundred books daily, not includ- ing those used in the library. The library also subscribes to more than seventy-five period- icals for information and pleasure reading. 20
