Mathematics Department Although mathematics is not a required subject, it is not difficult to sense the rising importance ot this course in our modern age of mechanics. In the future there will be few iobs open for men who have not had mathematical training of some kind. The course in General Mathematics provides an opportunity for those, who are not planning to go to college, to take mathematics. Introductory Alge- bra and Plane Geometry are courses which have always been popular with the students. The courses in Advanced Algebra, Trigonometry, and Solid Geometry are designed for those who are plan- ning to continue their study of mathematics in college. A good student of mathematics must be alert and accurate, he must have a sense of reason, patience and determination to sit down and tackle a problem. A concentrated study in this field can help the pupil acquire these desirable traits. Nursing Home Nursing is a very enriching and worth-while course for girls to study. During the first semester first-aid meth- ods are taught. This enables students to render help in the first-aid room. During the second semester tield trips are taken to many public offices, institutions, and hospitals. One ot the most interesting and unusual trips is the one to the State Hospital. The experience and knowledge gained while studying this course helps to develop ability and personality. NURSE: Miss B. Faye Miller

English Department One of the most important departments in any high school is the English Department, for it is one of the 'Few divisions that reaches every student. One of the objectives of this field is to enable a student to recognize good literature and to work with it to the extent of appreciating and understanding it. Other 'factors which a student should acquire in these courses are the ability to read with ease and the power to concentrate. When a person has learned to compress his thoughts in pleasure-reading and to select the most important ideas in technical material, he has gained a power from which he will protit during the rest of his life. Furthermore, this de- partment gives the student a chance to express himself orally as well as on paper, at the some time he becomes more conscious of correct gram- mar and punctuation. Any student interested and especially talented in Radio Production, Radio Script, and Dramatics has the opportunity to study courses in this broadening field. The Speech Class aims to help a person overcome his self-consciousness when speaking before a group, to teach him the importance of clearer enunciation, and to enable him to capture the interest of his audience. Realizing the struggles of groups of people in the past to live with each other helps us to see methods of solving our present and future political, economic, and social problems. We review the past in order to better qualify us to analyze these problems. For students with a college obiective a course of Ancient and Medieval History or one of Modern History is offered for pupils who wish a view of world history in a one year course. The real backbone of citizenship training is in the year course of American History and Govern- ment. For seniors a definite analysis in contemporary business and social activities and a course of the life of our neighboring Latin American nations is available. All through the three year curricula current events are taught once a week. l l 9
