TOP ROW: Harold D. Grubs, D. N. Stalker, C. W. Balsam. SECOND ROW: Irving Pross, Karl Huls, R. O. Merrill. Industrial Arts Department The Industrial Arts Department was opened in T931 with eight laboratories. Ever since that date hundreds of students have received careful training and guidance in the courses which this department offers. The classes now taught in this field are: lndus- trial Survey, Cabinet Making, Radio, Electricity, Me- chanical Drawing, and Architectural Drawing. A class in Map Drawing was added to the curriculum of the department during the second semester of this year. lt is the first time that this course has ever been offered in our school. During the war there were difficulties in lndus- trial Arts such as lack of materials and personnel, but now the situation is becoming less critical. The instructors hope that they will soon be able to reopen the sections in automotives and printing. This department, which has prepared so many boys for useful vocations, occupies the back part of our school known as the shops . Home Economics Department The obiective of the courses in Home Economics is to teach girls to be more aware of the uses of home economics in their daily lives. These courses enable girls to assume their share of responsibility in the home. Other aims are to develop the girls' abilities to select and make clothing that is attrac- tive, and to teach them interest in good grooming. i , Sie . . 1 :'.:' fJ5 -1 Um' ' fl 'f igsfwzf WP , p f 4 A, 'P MARY L. The Science Department at DeVilbiss does not attempt to ex- plain everything concerned with these inventions, but it is designed to help the student understand the world about him. The instructors of General Science, Biology, Physiology, Chemistry, and Physics aim to help the individual, school, and community to understand the factors of environment, and to encourage co- operation on community problems of health and welfare. They endeavor to stimulate thinking among the students and to interest them in modern developments in equipment and recent advances in all fields. By developing the powers of observa- tion, and by teaching the scientific method, this de- partment hopes to inspire students to do research work in science, or to apply their learning to what- ever occupation they enter. From the skeleton to the Bunsen burners and test tubes, the students always find the equipment and experiments interesting and instructive. Ever since DeVilbiss opened, its students have learned the fundamentals and the new develop- ments in science-the basis of our modern way of life-from the careful guidance of our faculty.
